For me it's a combination of letting things build up like you say. For example I let small things slide but apparently for some, this is like an invitation to see if bigger things slide. Which leads me to my next point... People have continuously failed me. So I'm not as courteous as I used to be. So now, I don't go out of my way to help people. Because they have failed me.
