Back in late 40’s/early 50’s my dad and his family goes up to knotts and get some berries jam and jellies and stay for mrs. Knotts chicken...and he and his brothers will go on the stagecoach ride for a nickel and the coach goes around the berries farm...then they added a train, mystery shack, calico caverns mines, ghost town, a stunt show,

Remember my grandparents went one year. Got all sort of jams and honeys
I went as a small child in the sixties, indepence hall area was all still berries it was originally a petting zoo , stagecoach and Merry go round lol. Candy store had a big saint Bernard statue we sat on . Unfortunately since mr Knott died the candy is no longer made on site and it taste like garbage now, only taffy is made still 😢

They actually sell their own Brand of Jam called the Berry market. they cant use the name Knotts berry farm to sell jams due to some copyright issue with smuckers having the name rights when it comes to sell jams

Knotts is the first theme park in the US, more importantly the berry farm and stand (which still exists at Knotts) was so popular for boysenberries, that it grew into a bakery selling tarts and pies and then restaurant and to keep customers something to do ghost town was moved there. Most everything you see is not a prop, this was an actual ghost town moved on site. You were lucky to sit in the diner portion of the restaurant since this is the original from the berry farm (it did not move its right where it always has been) and the expansion behind basically goes on and on forever. The birdcage theater is where Steve Martin began in the 60s.
The Original stand is long gone sadly. I dont think anyone even knows what happened to it. at best they do have a replica Berry stand that they bring out during the Boysenberry festival in which they sell Boysenberry plants
rexrabbiteer That is sad to hear. I know when Cedar Fair purchased Knotts they began tearing down some of the historic structures, most notably the small chapel with the amazing stained glass transformation of christ. Does the large church with steeple still exist? How about the panarama show in Ghost Town that tells the story of Mrs Knotts' grandmother coming across the desert in a covered wagon?
The church was moved just outside of the park close to the Independence hall but I think recently the church will be moved to a new location in september, here is an article www.ocregister.com/2018/02/09/historic-church-host-to-many-weddings-to-be-moved-from-knotts-berry-farm/ the panorama show is long gone, the scene at 13:56 is where it would've been, inside the golden trails hotel. they did however bring back the Mission Diorama's and the panning for gold attraction was put back in its original spot

I wonder if the still have the awesome fried chicken. At least you can get the delicious boysenberry jam in the store. I remember going there and my favorite ride was "Knott's Berry Tales," which sadly became the "Jurassic Park" ride (which was cool enough, but I liked the former much better. Ahhh, memories....Can you still pan for gold I wonder?
Have never heard about that story about the hippies and the fence, interesting. Knotts definitely has a soft spot in my theme park heart. Probably because it is America’s 1st theme park. We got a platinum pass and plan to visit more cedar fair parks soon.
Catawampus are not extinct in fact at knotts they just recently had a catawampus baby. You can go and visit the family.

Sad Eye Joe is funny today. My dad's friend remembered the days when he could walk around Knotts when it was free admission. Ghost Town was pretty much it at the time.

It was gonna happen anyways. The closed park capitalism, not sure why they used "consumerism" as that's not a social construct term. But ya, one vagrant ruined it for the others which 99.9% wasn't raping people.
I wish I had known you were going to Knotts, I live 20 mins. from there and old enough to remember when it was not so commercial. There use to be an alligator farm at the front of the park and a wonderful carousel. No gates and a family could spend all day and later eat a chicken dinner. No admission, you would pay for rides or pay nothing. Knotts owned the original ghost town called Calico in the desert of California. Some of the original buildings were transported to Knotts.
Ross Man... I grew up in la habra heights and my family were friends with the knotts way back when they sold pies on the corner...I loved riding the burros when I was little.
I do remember the burro rides, but I do not think they are there anymore. I had a free pass when I worked for Polaroid. I serviced the ID cameras for employees and seasonal passes.
Yeah I went to the alligator farm they had huge 30 feet aligators in huge pits used to sacre the bejesus out of me lol. The movieland was museum was the best I have ever went to , still have pics of me mom and grandma at museum in Posiden adventure!!!

Thank you for bringing me back to my childhood.. I love Knott's just as much as Disney when i was a kid.. The Log ride and the Chicken restaurant was a huge part of that.. boysenberry pie rhubarb and chicken fried steak..ahhh memories

Dude you should read the history of the boysenberry! A cross of several berries, Walter Knott found the only known remaining vines on the former Boysen farm in Buena Park and was the first to grow them commercially. Knotts Berry Farm is famous for boysenberries, which are awesome.
We used to love Knotts when we were younger...haven't lived down that way for a long time. A lot has changed over the years.

Brought back lots of memories. Spent quite a few birthdays there. Interesting fact, in the Mojave is the Calico Ghost town and silver mines, and if I'm remembering correctly, Knotts was so fascinated by the ghost town and mines that he started to rebuild the buildings in the ghost town in the hopes of making it a tourist attraction, unfortunately its so far out in the middle of nowhere that he decided to use it as an inspiration for what is known as knots berry farm now. If you ever have the will to venture out that far into the desert, its an incredibly interesting place and you can see what inspired Knotts berry farm.
I am impressed with the amount of live performaners in the park, you dont get to see that as much these days !
Knott's was the first amusement park. Walter Knott and Walt Disney were friends.
I grew up going to Knott's a lot. We lived just a couple miles from there. And my brother worked there. So between that and school field trips I got in free or at discount.
One of the best parts of my life were spent here. The Knotts' rocked.
I work at Knotts and I am always glad to see someone have a good time there, it is the oldest themed amusement park in the U.S. A boysenberry is a cross between a raspberry and a blackberry.
I was a '60's kid and we lived in Buena Park, went to Knott's a lot. It was a lot different back then, the only thing you could get to drink was Boysenberry juice, dirt parking lot, and the train robbery was the big thing. I liked it better back then. The best thing to me was as you were leaving they had a bee hive behind a glass wall and you could watch the bees inside

Boysenberries are delicious! We had a hill full of them growing up in Southern California. Knott 's berry farm has darn good chicken too
I remember when Knots was free as I grew up in Garden Grove. I have always been told the fence went up because Walter got tired of parents dumping kids for the day
Go to Calico it use to be owned by Walter Knott and can be considered a early version of the Theme park
I use to love that place as a kid! In the video you show the two wooden fancy ladies sitting on the bench I have a picture of me sitting next to them when I was 6 I am now 38 lol
Wow the main part of Knotts Berry Farm has not changed. They have added some rides by the looks of it. My memory may be wrong but I was there in 61 as a kid and Im pretty sure we paid to get in. They still sell jams so must have berries somewhere. Great memories for me. Thanks for the revisit. Loved that place. Do they still let you pan for gold?? Keep Safe❤ Keep Well❤

I grew up not far from Knotts, in the 50s and 60s admission was free but they charged for the rides
Debbie Mcwaters EVPEACE back then they wouldn't charge to get in but to ride the rides. The only ride they had back then was just the mine co & then the train.. Later on they added the log ride.
The jams are just generic like they sell in the store. Not made at the parks now.
I remember going there as a kid not having to pay to get in. It sure has changed over the years.
Knott's boysenberry jam was my absolute favorite jam as a kid. The other kids thought I was weird, since they all liked strawberry and other popular flavors. But mine was always boysenberry. I still remember the tangy flavor. Won't touch the stuff nowadays, but the memories are fond. :)

I use cattawampus as a word meaning off kilter or crooked. I never it was a creature or object.
cattawampus was used years ago about a creature that was in the desert. people would go out there and some would vanish. they called it cattawampus because of the fury hair and horns that came off to the side and looked sorta like a wolf.

Jacob, Jacob, Jacob.....your vids are so much fun! I remember when I was about 4 years old my family went to Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm and the Alligator Farm (which I'm not sure is still there). I believe it was Knotts Berry Farm where they had an old western "shootout". Of course at 4 years old, I thought it was real and got scared. I hid behind my mom the rest of the time! Your video brought back some good childhood memories. Thank you Jacob!
Their boysenberry pie is amazing. Always get that if I go there before knotted scary farm in the fall.

The fire station next to coast rider actually burnt down when it was pouring rain, now they're rebuilding it on la palma just on the other side of the street, good times.

I grew up near Knott's Berry Farm. We lived less than two miles away and I used to walk there a lot when I was a kid. I even met Walter Knott (who was the founder and original owner of the place). I really enjoyed this video - - it's fun to see how the place has expanded and changed. I remember when they put the fence up to keep the hippies out.

One of my most missed effects at Knotts is of a corpse with a bullet hole on his forehead in a coffin inside a hearse that would once in awhile lift up and slowly turn to face you before lowering himself back inside the coffin. the hearse along with the coffin and dead guy are now in the Boothill cemetery but doesnt seem to work anymore, hope knotts fixes it someday...

A Boysenberry is a cross between a raspberry, blackberry, and loganberry. It was developed by Rudolph Boysen back in the late 1920’s, but he couldn’t make his new berry a commercial success, and abandon the project. He took his plants to Coolidge Rare Plant Nursery in Altadena. [Years later, Walter Knott heard about Boysen tracked him down. He took took the few dying vines left, and brought them back to life at what is now Knott’s Berry Farm. He successfully grew the fruit, and named it after Boysen.

I remember going on a field trip to knotts. I was in 3rd grade I think? It was fun except we only got to go on the mine/cave ride, and Pan for gold.
Imagine what it would’ve been like in the 60s. I picture it like Manson’s Family living at Spawn Ranch. Must’ve been amazing.
I can see where Disney got the idea for the "Big Thunder Mountain RR" - where Knott's has the two vultures above the mine entrance, Disney has a goat.

The big difference is that at knotts they dont have breaks so you can spin it as hard as you can. the disney teacups dont spin as much

❤️MY CHILDHOOD❤️ My dad used to say the stamp they give you when entering (for easy return upon exiting) soaks into your skin & is really meant to make you immediately crave Knotts food & drink.
The one and only time I've gone to Knott's Berry Farm was in 1981 when I was 9yo. The memories are kind of hazy now and I wouldn't be able to tell how things have changed from then and now. I only have a few photos from the trip and a souvenir sketch of me drawn by one of the caricature artists there. But I'm happy to see from your video that a lot of Knott's seems to remain faithful to what it has always been. It would be lovely to visit it again. Thank you for sharing this video! :)

The Boysenberry is a hybred cultivated from blackberries, logan berries and red raspberries. I found this out by going to Google and wikipedia about the history of Knott's Berry Farm.

I have many happy memories of Knott’s. We had a school field trip and had a presentation by Mrs. Knott. It’s very true about the hippies and park admission, etc.
Reminds me of when Orange County was simpler with only a few hundred thousand people instead of over 3 million.

I can remember when they offered mule rides! We visited Knott's every year! When I was a teen, we would go at night and get in for like $15! We had SO much fun!😊
