How Floor Jansen made me a better virtual speaker

  • As a Toastmaster I'm always looking for inspirational presentations on CZcams. Surprisingly, one of the best I've found recently is a Eurovision-winning pop song covered by euro-metal valkyrie Floor Jansen.
This talk is not just an appreciation of her performance, but also a showcase of how to use Apple Keynote's new features to make an impactful multimedia presentation on Zoom.
This entire talk is done in one single take and recorded directly from the live presentation screen, just like it would have been screenshared in a remote Zoom meeting. The only edits are some slight volume adjustments to make things easier to hear.
(Yes, fellow Toastmasters, it goes a bit beyond the official time limit. Since this isn't a competition talk, I figured I could go a bit over the regulation time to ensure I covered enough material!)

You definitely choose a great subject to use as an example for your point. Floor has a special presence about her, she is one very special lady.

Musical theater training is a big part of the way Floor moves when performing. She is acting out the songs through body movement which accentuate the emotional content within the lyrics. Great video Andrew.

I discovered this video as a random recommendation, probably from watching a ton of Floor Jansen videos. This is a fascinating analysis from an angle I wouldn't have expected. That being said, with all of Floor's distinctive movements and hand gestures, a body language analysis is perfect for her.

Floor did a few years of musical theatre during her school years. I think that was time well spent in view of the rest of the career. The trick is, get maximum dramatic effect supporting your drama/story with minimal movement. This performance was not distance because of the pandemic by the way, she just had an operation and was medically infit to travel from Sweden to the Netherlands.

Floor always uses her whole body to tell the story of a song.

Using your arms is also useful to have better breath control, because raising them widens the chest area to give more room for the lungs. It also helps them with their technique as a clue what to do with their vocal mechanism.

While Floor and her husband Hannas developed excellent home studio capabilities, I believe the Beste Zangers film crew came to them and recorded this one, using Floor's home studio...I might be wrong, but I thought this was the case.

It looks like you were having some green screen problems. I've lived through a lot of the same in my home studio as well. To avoid some of the issues I saw in your video, we need to get greater separation between ourselves and the green screen to avoid that green fringing and trouble with the edges. That flashing below your left elbow was probably from insufficient light on your green screen. I had to learn the hard way that the green screen needs its own lights.

Things I found distracting in your presentation: the constant flickering on (especially) your left side, and the phone in your hand. The latter actually appears to be blocking you from using your hands effectively to communicate.

You didn’t play the rest of the song! To use your architecture analogy, you showed us the ground Floor, but not the rest of the building! Pure blasphemy! Beware of windmills…

You might show your hands less. They are a distraction when waving about, they are huge when compared to your head. You might not like the comment, sorry for that, but you are presenting something, and distraction therefore is a no-no.
