    • @sethtubman1229
      @sethtubman1229 Před 6 lety +5

      The closest I could find was a WaPo article from 2004 on the Bush White House. The Press Secretary then earned $157,000 a year. The Presidential salary was doubled in 2001 from $200,000 to $400,000 and with political appointees, the Presidential salary is usually one of the highest if not the benchmark. My guess is, salaries in 1999 were probably a quarter of what she earned in the private sector, so probably about $135-$140,000 because she was Press Secretary and Assistant to the President, whereas Deputy Assistants make less and Special Assistants are the lowest of the third grade. There are limits on the number who can hold those titles; in the Obama White House, only 17 had the designation of "Assistant to the President." Below the three levels are the bulk of the staff: staff assistants, legislative assistants, greeters, secretaries, record keepers, etc., and they earn between $40,000-$50,000. Generally the people with regular access to the President receive an assistant title. The White House Chief of Staff decides in consultation with the President, which grade a staff member falls into. The White House Personnel Office (which Debbie Fiderer was said to be a part of in "A Proportional Response,") actually writes the checks; they're the White House H.R., with ultimate authority probably being the Chief of Staff for lower ranked jobs and senior staff jobs perhaps being ultimately up to the President (I mean senior-level people such as Deputy Chief of Staff, Communications Director, etc). Exactly how much a person earns is, like elsewhere, determined by education, experience, etc., so you could have two Deputy Assistants and one earns $81,000 and one earns $84,000, for example. It was mentioned in an early first season episode "Five Votes Down," that Leo McGarry made "$40,000 a pop on the lecture circuit," so you definitely take a big pay cut to serve in the White House or government service in general. But of course you're usually only there for 2 or 3 years, maybe 8 if you're someone like Valerie Jarrett or Condoleezza Rice and Stephen Hadley, all of whom served 8 years in their administrations. But most people burn out after one term at the most; it's very long hours (not necessarily always as long as the show portrayed) and very high pressure work. After three or four years of that, I'd definitely go take a one-day a week lecturing job at some college for $60,000.

      Now, when Andi does get pregnant they talk about getting married, but it is about getting re-married. They had divorced prior to series 1, probably due to the stresses caused by infertility and two busy professional lives.

      They’ve both been working in Democratic politics for years, it’s highly likely they’ve worked on some campaigns together, and met at functions. The flashbacks are not about how the characters met each other, but how they all came to work for Bartlet. By your logic we’d need to see how a whole bunch of the other characters met for the first time, since most of the principal campaign staff had met previously. The only truly new character in the flashbacks is Donna.

Obviously I know it's just during the campaign & if the campaign wins then she'd get more as most senior staff but still $30k is I suspect low even for probably state level office campaigns unless it's someone like me... who know literally knows then ok it make sense. There is just so much going on here. We've already met these two characters. This is a flashback. Its purpose is to show us how close these characters have been since before Bartlet's campaign and where CJ was before Bartlet as well as where Toby finds her. He gets lucky. Had he talked to her a week before this event or a week after, he'd probably catch her in a better opinion of what she does in Showbiz. I mean she'd find another job that paid as much as she had been making. She's a cat she woulda landed on her feet but Toby catches her on a day where she got fired from her job, lost her glasses and falls into her own swimming pool, and he gets her for a song cuz he's a sweet talker and he knows how to play her. I doubt Leo McGarry asked for her by name either. Toby just didn't want to be press secretary. He was saving himself grief by picking the person on his rolodex best fit for that position. He doesn't just do this over the phone. He drives to her place unannounced. This is not a common occurrence for either of them, so while they know each other, we get the indication they're not so much friends as coworkers who happen to run in the same circles. Maybe they are friendly. Perhaps CJ thinks of Toby as a friend in the same way she thinks of everyone she meets as a friend until they cross her and then watch out buster you'd better install eyes in the back of your head. There's also a kind of symbolism going on here, tho perhaps tongue in cheek. Seems the writers have gone out of their way to get CJ wet. This could simply be an opportunity to increase ratings since Allison Janney's physically appealing in or out of a wet suit. However, I would rather believe the reasoning behind the water was more than just "sex sells." It's a kind of baptism. Leo's John the Baptist bringing Mary Magdalene into the fold. Okay the symbolism doesn't hold water well under close examination, but she makes a point to ask Toby if Bartlet is a good man and Toby's poker face is terrible. However, we know CJ is a "good man" in some ways she's shown she's made of sturdier stuff than most actual men. Later in the series she stands toe to toe with foreign diplomats and retired five star generals and comes out on top. While she doesn't single handedly save Bartlet's campaign, her presence does prove to have a cleansing effect.
    It's also just a funny, well written scene that gives us a chance to see these two characters in a different light. We see a Toby with a little less of the weight of the world on his shoulders. We learn what CJ gave up to help Bartlet win. What she sacrificed. Half a million dollars a year is a lot to give up for one's political aspirations and personal convictions, but who could say no to taking a stab at being in The White House?
