Dolittle: Robert Downey Jr's Awfully Good Follow-Up To The MCU Was A Bomb

- There’s rarely been a Hollywood comeback as triumphant as that of Robert Downey Jr, who went from being a tabloid punchline of the late 90s to a ten year stint as Iron Man in the MCU, then finally winning an Oscar for his extraordinary performance in Christopher Nolan’s OPPENHEIMER, and now turning to prestige TV to play the multiple American roles in OLDBOY director Park Chan-wook’s HBO adaptation of the Pulitzer-winning Vietnam War novel THE SYMPATHIZER. But in between his final stint in the iron suit and his return to award-worthy period dramas, RDJ was in another career rough spot when he talked to the animals as the titular doctor in the family fantasy failure known simply as DOLITTLE.
As Downey’s tenure in the Avengers drew to a close in 2018, he began filming and co-producing alongside his wife Susan on another adaptation of Hugh Lofting’s beloved children’s book series of the British veterinarian who’s learned to talk with his animal clients, previously made by Fox as an epic musical with Rex Harrison in 1967 that infamously bribed its way to a Best Picture nomination despite its critical and financial failure, and a modern-day comedy with Eddie Murphy in 1998 and its 2001 sequel which inexplicably got several direct-to-video follow ups, with both Kyla Pratt and the voice of Norm MacDonald returning for every single one.
But Downey’s Dolittle would be different under the direction of Oscar-winning TRAFFIC writer and SYRIANA director Stephen Gaghan alongside a series of big name actors voicing his animal pals, most of whom have won either Academy Awards or WrestleMania. Then after a round of reshoots in 2019 to make the movie funnier set to be directed by RENFIELD’s Chris McKay, but then handed off to NINJA TURTLES 2014’s Jonathan Leibesman, DOLITTLE dropped in January 2020 to avoid competition with RISE OF SKYWALKER only to be put down by horrible reviews and muzzled by its weak box office haul, and later referred to by Robert Downey Jr. as “a two and a half year wound of squandered opportunity” that led him to rethink his post-MCU career for the better. But since this flick was sadly not the worst event in 2020 that led to empty movie theaters, let us revisit this career downswing for the former Iron Man that led him back into a huge upswing. After all, you JoBlo subscribers may remember DOLITTLE coming out not just right before COVID, but also right after Universal’s other infamously bad movie about CGI-rendered talking animals--or should I say, singing animals? How fitting for the same studio that’d give us OPPENHEIMER to have given us a double feature that felt like the cinema equivalent of Hiroshima and Nagasaki!

Shame that Robert Downey Jr followed up his Marvel run with this) lacklustre outing. Though, he now has an Oscar, which proves that he's bounced back.
I called him as the Best Supporting Oscar winner as soon as I saw the movie; same with Cillian for Best Actor
9:35 I was sure that was Simon Pegg until you said otherwise lol. I am pretty stoned tho.
I'm sober and swore it was Simon Peg lol
It's good to do something entirely different after such a long period as one character. I thought it wasn't too bad, but then I don't base my opinions on what other people think, only on whether I feel entertained after the movie has finished.
He's likable in everything. I was just watching" The Judge" with Downey and Robert Duvall. To me , it's always been a good movie not perfect but good.
Thanks Jesse great review on Dolittle and still makes me laugh every time.
Jesse’s Awfully Good Movies makes me laugh so hard. My mom was just as confused as me at the “Highlander 2” premise
14:46 Shout out to Jesse & JoBlo for the Double Toasted shout-out.
I remember seeing this movie right around the time Jesse did his awfully good review of Big Momma's House 3. I had a feeling this day would come.
@wstine
Jesse did said that God finally punished Robert Downey Jr. for blackface in Tropic Thunder.
I remember that review too he did a while back too
I saw it in theaters 🎥 and liked it.
I knew this movie was doomed from the moment I saw the trailer and thought it looked like another Disney rip-off
When Doctor Strange was looking at the many outcomes to facing Thanos, this was the timeline that made him cry.
I’m surprised no one mentioned that the Queen was played by Jessie Buckley (from I’m Thinking of Ending Things and Alex Garland’s MEN) but something tells me she’s glad no one remembers that she’s in this movie.
I keep forgetting that’s her in any review of this nonsense. Thankfully she got roles like “I’m Thinking…”, “Men” & “The Lost Daughter”
Shade in da house! Appreciate you amigo.
The only Dr. Dolittle movie I’ve seen is the 90s Eddie Murphy one
Hell, I would say out of three Dr. Dolittle in existence, the Eddie Murphy one is the best out of all them not including the sequels.
@@breannaperkins88Well the first and second Dr Dolittles with Eddie Murphy.
Just sayin’
I miss these Awfully Good videos
The movie came out BEFORE the COVID lockdowns and yet it still bombed.
Great video. I lost at the end with the Chief Wiggum reference.
I can't believe this was the first non MCU role Downey did since the Judge in 2014 outside of cameoing in Chef, Thank his lucky stars Nolan got a performance out of him.
Also holy shit how much blackmail did they have on this cast?
I think Nolan knew he had the right guy to play the man who ruined Oppenheimer’s career. RDJ was brilliant no matter what this bad movie may show
Why is the title so long now? Sometimes I don’t even know if it’s actually you. Just an Awfully Good Movies: insert title. When people search about awfully good movies, yours should be the only result because you own this!
I want as many viewers to see this amazing stuff! My wife and I always look forward to a new one every month. Keep up the awesome work and hope it’s easier to find you when searching on CZcams.
Another suggestion: The 1999 gem Beowulf with the great Christopher Lamber!
Everything just feels like a giant CGI set especially on the ship
6:09 you mean like a yelling alien goat?
The Obadiah dub joke was perfection 🤣🤣🤣 well done
He definitely dissed data from the goonies it wasnt a good look .
Wait what, I love the donkey in shrek Eddie did a great job.
I know this is an unpopular opinion but I actually really loved and still love Dolittle; I thought that it was fun, funny, and touching!
It came out during pre-covid
When the Eddie Murphy remakes are considered the better version.
Normally British character as a Welsh man instead. Lol. The Welsh are British
I was confused when the trailer dropped, thinking “is this something we really need?” And then the reviews came and I saw a few vids on it, cringing so bad wondering if we were back to RDJ’s rough patch of climbing back up following his aforementioned substance abuse issues. Then he costarred in “Oppenheimer” and landed that Oscar; I knew he would win for that role & he was excellent
Still a better Robert Downey Jr. movie than Shaggy Dog.
*_DO NOT WATCH WHILE STONED_*
I cannot wait for the Awfully Good Movies review of Fox’s ill-fated Garfield: The Movie starring everyone’s favorite comedian, Bill Murray.
The Hulkbuster joke had me laughing on the toilet😂
The only good thing about this movie did was give me a newfound appreciation for both of the rex Harrison, Dr. Dolittle and the Eddie Murphy one
Oppenheimer: Robert Downey Jr. was once a lowly actor who starred in the film where a dragon farts in his face.
Strauss: No, just an actor.
lol nice to see double toasted in this video 😂
We missed you Jesse
He did mostly for his kids be able to watch something he was in
Have you ever heard a Welsh accent before? His accent definitely Welsh and not in the slightest scottish
I guess you could say there are movies that Do little to make us forget about actors previous roles
8:50 yeah, that would've been way better 😂
It wasn't that bad and quite charming
Hope he got paid well and had fun
Say what you will about the 1967 dr dolittle at least it had charm, heart, good songs Anthony Newley charming performance by Rex Harrison regardless how you feel about dr. Dolittle 67 is a stone classic compared to Dolittle 2020
His Welsh accent is excellent in the movie. If you a bad Welsh accent you not only insult the Welsh, it can go into a borderline Indian parody accent. Also Welsh people ARE British.
When the John Cena spinoff?
Wales is in Britain. Why are Canadians on the internet as bad as Americans at actually using it?
I've heard of this film.. and it looks like a right Stinker.
This was one of the only movies I have turned off because it was SO awful
God i hate CGI people and animals so much!
It was a terrible movie & i was sitting in the cinema thinking they dubbed his voice in the film
You dissed the movie for a Godfather reference while you made a Snidely Whiplash reference?!
supposed to be like a cross between flubber movie and willie wonka boring + dumb
Awfully good? No, nothing was good about it.
9:19 hey that’s racist
Horrible movie
Downey is trash.
People conflate fame with talent. To me, he is the epitome of "I know his uses, and they are few!" Too bad Denethor doesn't cast Hollywood movies.
STICK TO EDDIE MURPHY'S ORIGINAL COMEDY FILM, LOL! 🧑⚕️🐶🐯🦁🐺🦊🦝🐰🐴🎞️🎬🎥🤣
I’ll stick with the Eddie Murphy Dolittle. Hell I’ll stick with the Rex Harrison one.
