What if... Nutrition could treat mental illness?

  • Professor Julia Rucklidge, Psychology, College of Science
    Despite the advent of medications and other therapies over the last 50 years, the rates of mental illness have been on the rise rather than a decline. Over the last decade, scientists have been uncovering an uncomfortable truth: What we eat is affecting our mental health.
    In this talk, Prof Rucklidge will discuss the data that shows an alarming picture of food choices serving as risk factors to all kinds of psychiatric problems; she will then introduce the recent paradigm shift of using nutrients to treat these challenges, reviewing the evidence to date. The talk will challenge our current treatment regime for mental disorders and suggest one alternative course of action.

    Broad-spectrum micronutrients (Hardys DEN) and a whole food plant based diet put my bipolar 1 and PMDD into remission in two weeks. I was suicidally depressed for 6 months this year. It took me 20 years to find this treatment approach for my serious mental illness. Thank you Dr Julia and Dr Bonnie Kaplan, and Dr Charles Popper. Thank you David Hardy. I am also part Maori. I am truly grateful for your work. 🙏🏼

    I invented the supermarket diet, for the diet I run 7 km to the supermarket and then 7 km home carrying groceries on my back. I quickly became able to work out what I didn't want to carry home, what I didn't want to snack on while shopping and where the nutrients needed for my specific body and mind were hiding in food I was paying for. It didn't start of as a diet and it's not a diet and it's not an exercise program it's more simply termed enjoyment in living

    I loved everything the Professor said but when she was explaining the Mediterranean Diet, she left out the generous use of olive oil and also slipped in 'low fat' when she mentioned the consumption of dairy. I doubt very seriously that the original Mediterranean diet had any "low or no fat" anything. Could there still be a lingering American scientific bias towards fats in our diets?
    Anyway, I love that people are talking about the diet connection to mental health. Keep up the good work!

There seems to be substantial benefit from nutritional support (especially in conjunction with fitness programs) in the treatment of mood disorders as well as other more serious psychological disturbances. Yes in a way it is amazing that people with mental illness even start to look at nutrition as a way out of mental illness. Firstly they have so much trouble ( schizophrenics in particular ) in forming logical opinions and secondly they are told point blank they they will never get better. Some 'professionals' will even go to great lengths to discourage the sufferer to look for an alternative and terrorise them with doomful stories of losing their minds completely. Ugh !
    It was only after my son had tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose of clozapine that I decided enough is enough. Thank you to Adrienne at Hearing Voices Aotearoa for putting me in the way of Dr Abram Hoffer's work. Less than 3 months into taking high doses of niacin and vitamin C he is well on the way to recovery after 15 years of suffering. I cannot say that we have received unqualified support from psychiatrists in New Zealand, in fact his current shrink is quite hostile and has tried to talk him out of taking niacin in particular. Luckily Adrianne has come to the rescue and referred me to look up this wonderful woman's work on youtube. My son has been watching this himself and is very heartened by it. Even though I and the rest of the family could see he was dramatically improved he now has confidence in himself.
    Please; other parents and family of sufferers do the research for them and get these vitamins. I buy mine online as they are much cheaper than in New Zealand and you can only get non flush niacin ( you need straight niacin to prevent build up in the liver ) over the counter here.

    Thank you very much for the work you are doing Julia Rucklidge! When I started my Masters degree I was diagnosed with ADHD and I took meds for 2.5 years and then I started developing other symptoms such as high anxiety and depression. I stopped taking medicine when I started my PhD, however, my symptoms made it difficult to be organised and focused so I started taking medicine again. I do not like taking the medicine as it causes other symptoms like anxiety, depression, smoking, and insomnia, and my heart rate gets down to 60 bpm and it feels too weird to exercise like this so I have stopped. I just ordered the micronutrients in the mail and I cannot wait to start taking them as I really think this will help as I meditate everyday and I have such a great life, great friends, and really nothing to be sad about, but then I have these symptoms. medications broke down and destroyed my mom's body and mind. She trusted doctors and pills, and lost a good 25 years of her life dying early at 63. She was still in Miserable Pain for several years, even WITH the pills, she never got out of depression and in her diary, asked the Lord to just take her out of this world, she hated being alive. She had the most kind, loving and giving heart, she was so amazing and the drugs she trusted twisted her personality and behavior, until she was unrecognizable. Pills don't help, they destroy.

      One of my good friend's story exactly. But she loved her take out, her coke, and a number of things that are not good for you. She was bipolar, don't know if something else was going on besides that.
      Died in her sixties, in 2020. Not of the fashionable condition though. She said for many years that she wanted to die and at some point was given maximum dosages of serious psychtropic medications. Side effects... destroyed her liver, among other things. I do think she would still be alive without all those prescriptions.
      Most of these very well paid doctors do not have a clue about human nutrition, it is not what these psychiatrists went to school for.
      Keeping people medicated is a very profitable business for big pharma. No doubt about it.

      Ok - I'm bipolar 1 sever rapid cycling. As researched, the meds has efficacy for a short period and then stopped working and left my liver in shambles and I almost checked out. I am now an organic gluten free vegan focusing on low temp cooking to keep the enzymes in a wide variety of food. I also am working fermented foods and I make excellent sour dough while grain gluten free bread. My muscle growth is excellent. For mental control I detox daily and I take organic lithium orotate.
      Obviously I still have a bad few hours here and there. Bipolar 1 is very very tough. However, the control I receive naturally is far, far, far better than any I received when the meds were working at their best. I am in a good place and have great relationships and a good career. I am extraordinarily healthy.
      I supplement with probiotics, enzymes, detoxes, vitamin b and d, and other things from Global Healing Center - they are research kings and visionaries in organic health.
      I am also now an unpaid volunteer counselor, and I work exclusively with peeps with severe mental health issues who's meds have lost their efficacy. Thus far, we have a 100 percent success rate with the organic lithium. I'm sure we'll have someone on the future, for which this does not work. Also - I suspect that it's more important to try to address things more with nutrition. I'm my own lab rat, so me first here.
      HOWEVER - I believe you can achieve an extraordinarily high off the chart result with lithium orotate. I buy the good stuff from Global (I'm not affiliated, they don't know me, and I don't sell anything or have a link - want to maintain credibility here). Eating only organic good food and not eating poison is so important - but the lithium may be the component in this for peeps like me who have severe illness.

This means that they are no more qualified to tell us the outcomes than the doctors they criticize. I was attending a raw food clinic. When I got out I continued to eat really healthy. Nevertheless without those so call "bad pharmaceuticals" I would not have a job, be able to care for my son, and have any significant quality of life. She spews studies to support likely a preconceived theory without being objective. Eat properly, exercise, and work on your relationships or development as part of a broader strategy. Eat oily fish a couple times a week or take a omega-3 supplement if you hate fish. Go for a walk daily for vitamin D. In many places, woman who have a surplus of milk, sell or donate their extra breast milk. If nothing else, it may help reduce your child's pain. Ask about their diets. Most with ample milk eat very well.
      Never underestimate the value of gentle whole-body message. That may help the constipation problems.
      When you gently stroke your child, repeat you love him, Repeat it continuously. The emotion will help both of you.
      Can he be "cured"? who knows. He and you can be given comfort.
      A book written in the 1950's may also help you. "What to do about your brain damaged...child." Contrary to what many distractors claim, it is/was based on research of thousands (yes, thousands!) of "no hope" children.

    • @heidimisfeldt5685
      @heidimisfeldt5685 Před 2 lety

      Add to the soil, no need to change it. Natural items to add:
      * Sawdust from untreated woods
      * Finely crushed eggshells, provide 26 minerals and trace minerals
      * Ashes from untreated woods. Plenty of minerals here.
      * Coffee grounds, free at coffee shops, provide a clean and labeled bucket, retrieve punctually every night.
      * Tree leafes, run the lawnmower through them in the fall, add to garden beds. Tree leafes are rich in nitrogen, and other minerals
      * Rock dust, tons of minerals here
      * Bone meal, & blood meal, from the garden nursery
      * Cow manure, or sheep manure, from said nursery.
      * If using chicken manure, compost for one whole year, before adding to your garden.
      * Natural untreated woodchips, from a tree grinder, find a tree removal business, they will deliver for free. Make garden pathways and use for mulching. Keeps moisture in the ground. Immensely enriches the soil as it decomposes.
      * Make your own compost pile, using garden waste,
      and raw fruit peels & raw vegetable scraps.
      NEVER ADD LEFTOVER FOOD, NO MEAT, NO BONES, NO BREAD, NO GRAINS TO THE COMPOSTING PILE, as every rodent miles around will feel invited and make an appearance soon enough.🐀🐁🐀🐀🐀🐀🐀

    Have you ever heard of a person that the healthier lifestyle they lead (drink lots of water, lots of fruit and vegetables diet, exercise) actually makes anxiety and depression and mental stress worse? That happens to me. And eating junk food for some reason creates a sense of relaxation. I don't know what first is and and no doctor can figure it out so far :( it started ever since I finished going through alcohol withdrawal from a week binge, then an ephedrine caffeine stack withdrawal weeks later. Before this I had some anxiety but never the panic attacks and constant strain on my head I've had. Over the years I had a severe diet during wrestling followed by bingeing, and had a feeling of "burnout" after supplementing fat burner a few years ago (I am 23 by the way) any guess or idea what to do? When eating healthy and having a healthy lifestyle is making things WORSE that's when I'm really stuck.. Thank you

    • @jonnyw82
      @jonnyw82 Před 8 lety +4

      How long were you living a healthier lifestyle for? Could it be that you were still going through sugar/alcohol/caffiene etc. withdraws? Your brain may have been used to a steady flow of stimulants and depressants and then when you abruptly stop it takes a while to reset.

    • @NatsFan18

    • @jonnyw82
      @jonnyw82 Před 8 lety +1

      That’s a tough one because there could be literally hundreds of causes. Most importantly is to make sure your fundamentals are solid. Good sleep, diet, exercise and stress management. If that doesn’t do it you would really have to see a good natural health dr. to perform a battery of tests such stool panel, b12, methylation etc. The problem is that this is very expensive, expect to spend $8-10K for a one year protocol which would include lab tests, consultations, supplements, re-testing etc. If you don’t have that kind of money to spend I would suggest experimenting with things such as ginseng, rhodiola, cold shock therapy, HIIT, sauna, EPA (2g/day). These therapies have been backed by research in improving mood and cognitive function. Another thing to rule out is food allergies (only elimination diet is effective), environmental allergies, low blood iron and insulin resistance.

      +koukouvania I saw that, however, that does not preclude you purchasing the EMPower Q96. In fact,
      Q Sciences has just recently been offered in Europe. Again, if you would like more information please contact me.
