  • The University of Florida Center for Movement Disorders & Neurorestoration is founded on the philosophy that integrated, interdisciplinary care is the most effective approach for patients with movement disorders and disorders involving a group of circuits in the brain called the basal ganglia. The Center delivers motor, cognitive and behavioral diagnoses as well as various treatments all in one centralized location. Care is coordinated and provided by leading specialists from many advanced medical and surgical services.
    Our model of care now forms the core of the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases.

    I suffered from severe constipation for over ten years. But, as a result of developing Non-Hidgkin’s Lymphoma, weight loss became a significant problem. After trying multiple diets, my nutritionist suggested I increase my protein and calorie intake significantly. And, because of the swallowing problem that is common with patients with Parkinson’s, my home health care provider started making me clear jello, mixed with canned fruit, and instead of using water, she used a high protein clear drink to dissolve the jello in. (Now remember, I had to go to the ER 4 times in 4 years for blocked bowls as a result of the constipation). Within less than one week of eating this high protein, high calorie jello combination once a day, my stool became softer, my bowls started moving at least once a day; and my constipation symptoms suddenly disappeared. Actually, I had to be careful because my stool was so soft that I sometimes moved my bowls before I could get to a bathroom. So, I wear make pampers in case of an accident! But, also, my anxiety caused by constipation immediately stopped and my energy level improved. I don’t know if this will work for every Parkinson’s patient; but, it has significantly helped me.

    Thank you SO MUCH for making this information available to us all. I have had PD for several years, am a 60 year old woman disabled from Arthritis, so now trying my best to gain weight. Had gallbladder surgery last year after that issue took my weight down to 73 so it took over a year to gain back up to 87. Now at the end of the flu, weight is back down to 78 so was happy to find your video. Am doing right ordering nutrition drinks delivered bc my appetite is gone again, but am eating a grilled chicken biscuit every morning, which had become breakfast, and is now divided, in & out of the fridge throughout the day bc it stays down. I am my caregiver, living alone, so very grateful technology allows me to order groceries. Please pardon typos, as my vision has been weak throughout. Every pound gained is as a mountain climbed now, and you are correct about us burning calories without activity. At this time I can feel the weight leaving my body, but can eat very little without becoming sick & losing it. So I try to eat as often as possible to build strength. Tonight, I must get back to doing my laundry regardless, although it will only be one load of needful things. GBU for sharing this video, letting me know I’m not as alone as I feel. On the other hand, I wish nobody else in the world had Parkinson’s. I also wish I wasn’t already losing my vision commenting here, bc I would love to be able to share my information with you to help you help others. Thank you for really helping people with Parkinson’s. There are no specialists who study it in my area, but my MD is caring and I’m sure doing everything he can for me. You are helping many of us. :)

    Regarding constipation, I learned how to make FERMENTED sauerkraut. It's very easy to make & took my hubby from being constipated 5-6 days in a row to moving bowels 5-6 times a week. It's natural & has multiple other health benefits. And it is delicious!

      Lactose free milk. Milk is sugar and sugar drives insulin. High chronic insulin levels damage the nervous system and the liver.

    @jimrutherford2773 Před rokem +1

    Some good points but you also left out some important points and really against current science. I'm stunned you didn't mention carbohydrates and the reduction of carbs. You emphasized grains, and said to avoid butter and red meat. Your treatment of parki seems to be stuck on the plan of 20+ years ago when low fat high carbs was pushed. Red meat, eggs, nutrient dense foods are what people need to prevent or attenuate parki or Alzheimers. Ketones are proven to help people with these cognitive diseases. A high sugar and low fat diet the Standard American Diet, has led to the explosion of dementia and related diseases. Look into intermittent fasting. You mentioned multiple meals and snacking each day. A chronically high insulin is exactly what these patients don't need. You can get enough healthy calories in two or three meals per day with no snacking.

    No dietician will ever recommend red meat (saturated fat the big "enemy"). I agree on the EVOO; I use lots of it. The irony of the saturated fat argument is that the ADA recommends 10% max, whereas the humble and healthy avocado contains around 16% saturated fat!

      Milk has been linked to it, actually the sugar in milk. Carbs, sugars, and milk all raise insulin, which has been implicated. If you must have milk, get lactose free. Also try fasting - skip a day or two eating every week.

    So, sad that the speaker doesn’t understand the science of “cause” of Parkinson’s, nutrition, fiber. As most, only talking about treating symptoms.
    As someone who got rid of all my Parkinson’s and meds by fasting and a carnivore diet.
    He also has a fixation with large bowl movements and often.
    I can’t imagine he doesn’t understand the protein availability and gastric problems beans bring to the table.

      Yeah, don't expect any fasting and carnivore related advice from a dietician! I eat LCHF (I don't use the word keto because i'm not 100% keto). I am very low carb; 20-30g. My bowel movement is great and I feel great.
