    Brent i absolutely love these videos. I've been an IT specialist for over 20 years but my degree was in art and i was fortunate to have a fantastic art history history teacher who cared about these sorts of details. i hope this never truly becomes a lost art and it won't with people like you

    Actually after being a member of Passion for Craft (since the beginning) I actually picked up on the bad parts of that mantel before you pointed them out. Thanks so much for these videos Brent- I've been learning a ton between these videos and Patreon!! If anyone is thinking about joining- do it! You won't be disappointed! 🍻

    Excellent video. Our great great aunt in Louisiana had two old fireplace mantels that were stored in here garage. We had no idea of the history or possible value. Here house was approximately 126 years old.
    We've learned so.much from your videos. In closing the mantels were sold at a garage sale, probably for under $100.00 dollars. In fairness our relatives had no idea of the possible value nor the history.
    God bless 🙏

    In my 1890s farmhouse, there’s just 1 mantle in the living room. I thought it would have been for a hidden fireplace because the “firebox” was plastered up, but I found no firebox; only an 18” wide chimney for the wood/coal stove that once sat in the room. They must have just wanted the mantle installed around the stove as decoration. Pretty neat!!

    Thanks Brent🤝.
    When I built my first mantle may years ago, I was inspired only by pictures from English fire surround company booklets.
    I deeply regret that there were no videos by You that time 😢

    Brent, I think you will single-handedly correct a lot of ill-fitting mantel's in otherwise beautiful old homes that have been 'salvaged' of their original mantels. And this begs the question: Why or How did we 'lose' the art of correctly designing and building in the building industry? Why are we building ugly buildings in America? Also thank you so much for doing what you do and for giving us the correct names of styles like Georgian 'Bolection Molding', as well as parts of the mantel ie - architrave.

    Brent, could you recommend an old mantle plan book? Something you could hand to a cabinet maker and say, "this is the one I want!"

    The Struggle Is Real!!!! I actually Google searched a mantle to see if it was actually “true to name” because it looked so bad- obviously it wasn’t. I did buy an antique mantle but still trying to figure out if the size is right. The hunt continues.

      I mean the vest that you are wearing: blue with quilted pattern and leather collar. We've had to lower the temperature of our house thanks to energy costs and I'm looking for something to stay warm. @@BrentHull

    I know a lot of builders will see this and think that all the “rules” are just snobbery.
    But i had an English teacher who told me that English has a lot of rules but you have to master them before you can break them. Shakespeare could invent new words and break the rules because he was a master of the language and knew exactly where it was appropriate to break the rules and inject his own design into the language.
    Builders need to start studying design and craftsmanship like an English student studies Shakespeare.

    They should outlaw placing television sets over fireplaces. It looks awful. Television sets and fireplaces/mantles should not have anything to do with each other. I get it it is a convenient spot to mount it but it looks awful.

    • @RenovationFarmhouse
      @RenovationFarmhouse Před rokem +3

      Agreed. Putting the television off to 1 side of the fireplace over a custom cabinet or dresser is a better look.
