- SO after fishing the canals with no success i headed to the river. Holy crap did i find some fish. Caught my personal best trout on fly from a river twice in a row, all on a 5wt fly rod. i love fly fishing.

Epic well done, those spur of the moment unorganised days are always the ones that pay off. A couple of weeks ago I made myself go fish even when I didn't feel like and to a spot that I wouldn't usually go to. It produced a great Brown of 10 lb, you never know until you go! Great clip and some donkey fish bro.

As much as people rave about the huge canal fish, those ones you got on natural flies in a river setting are more magical in my book than something taking rolled eggs or softbaits on spin rods in the artificial confines of the canals. I presume they are spawning migrants upstream from the canal system, but even so...

You should look into the Lifestraw Waterbottle, honestly my favorite piece of non fishing gear. Fill it up in the river, drink your fill, empty it back. Been using it for years and never once gotten sick. I do a lot of "backcountry" fishing out here in Colorado, and not having to haul a huge bottle of water around with me all day is a game changer. As long as you're near water, you can drink as much as you want. I don't have to worry about rationing my water throughout the day, and if I'm fishing with a friend, he can use the bottle as well, freeing up LOTS of space for additional gear, food, drone, beers, whatever...seriously, check it out.
