Forest coverage has grown to 13.84 percent today from 5.05 percent in 1978 in areas where China's Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program (TSFP), or Great Green Wall, was implemented. The TSFP was launched in 1978 and is the world's largest forestry ecological project, which consists of forestation in 13 provinces in northwest, north and northeast China. Over the past 45 years, more than 32 million hectares of windbreak trees have been planted, over 85 million hectares of degraded grassland have been recovered and more than 33 million hectares of desertified land have been fixed.

China now needs to diversify the trees in those forests. This will create a more stable ecosystem. At the moment a single pathogen could destroy entire forests. Having different trees would also be very beneficial to wildlife, as they attract different species to those areas. For example randomly throughout the forest harvest a tree but leave a large share of its trunk as dead fall. These will attract certain species which can help the forest overall. Recreate a traditional old forest diversity. Allowing different trees to sprout which widens the numbers of species. This will also encourage plants below the gaps in the tree line. This creates more cover for other animals near the ground.

Good job Сhina! The world is literally a greener place than it was 20 years ago and data from NASA satellites clearly shows that the source for much of this new foliage is none other but China. And, together with India's new farms, China's newly planted forestry account for one-third of the world greening. Indeed, China’s contribution to the global greening comes in large part (42%) from its programs to conserve and expand forests which were developed in an effort to reduce the effects of soil erosion, air pollution and climate change. China has planted more than 66 billion trees since 1978 and continue expanding on that program.

What the Chinese state broadcaster does not mention is that the deserts are expanding by several thousand square km each year. And planting non native monocultures of trees might be bad or non ideal. Native shrubs and grasses would soak up less scarce water and survive better. Still, that they are tackling this is good, and hopefully it is beneficial in the long term.

At the start if you plant different types, they are not resilient enough and will just die or be blown away by the wind and desert. Now that the variants that worked have survived and brought back moisture and wildlife etc, China has started diversifying and planting other varieties.
You need to walk first before you can run. These results are from decades of research, experimention, failures, and hard work. China had tried all kinds of species but they died and waste of time and effort and money at the start.
If it was so easy everyone living in desert would just plant any seed or species and make a rainforest from desert.

For the most difficult part of reforestation, if the Gobi desert have around about 2 cm to 19 cm of rain water per year mostly during summer time, then will it be better solution to used a type of bacteria that create their miniature ecosystem ? These miniature ecosystem need little water.
Studying how these bacteria transform the sand into harder soil could have a economical benefit, because transforming sand to hard soil is a benefiacial economic activity which is mostly free. Learn about how much ressrouce and time it take to transform the sand into hard soil.
Once a large track of miniature ecosystem is thriving, export and import this miniature ecosystem to other part of the same sand region and let the bacteria do their work. Reduce the amount of salt on the land, then the miniature ecosystem will grow. When most of the sand is turn into hard soil, planting tree will be easier.
Since bacterial ecosystem grow in a circle, it could be calculated on how much distance the planting hard soil shoud be put between them through the metric of time and water usage,
I hope the project of reforestation will be a success.

On the massive scale of reforesting that has been undertaken in a dry desert climate, surly it has changed the oxygen and CO2 levels? Humidity levels? As well as the amount water that has been retained in the soil and the trees. Is it possible this massive ecosystem that didn’t exist naturally. Has created a whole new set weather systems and patterns that didn’t exist before as well? How would that effect the rest of the worlds weather?
