Bike Front Rack

- I built myself a new beater bike that hopefully looks terrible enough so thieves will overlook it ;)
And it needed a cheap and sturdy front rack. So I made one from some bike frame scrap pieces I had left from other projects. Total cost: 0€!
If you don't want to weld on your fork, adjustable hose clamps with some rubber/inner tube underneath also work for attaching this style of rack.

best brake-eyelet mount design i have seen
Good work, as always, congratulations!
Cool reuse of the seat stays (?) without making the final product look like a bodge. Love it!
Love it! Great construction I wish I could weld like that
Complimenti, ottimo lavoro ! 👍
Elegant design
The joy of filling gaps
Satisfying to watch this vid 👍
Such a rad rack. Also a dope edit to the video.
Great film. : )
Muito bom amigo !show de bola 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Hey Phil, like always, pretty cool man! Did you make those straps (that hold the bag on the rack) yourself? Could you show us a bit more about them? I've made stuff with inner tubes before, but these are pretty cool! Keep it up man!
Hey Thanks. I think the one you mean is simply an inner tube with a carabiner hook on both sides. I attach the hooks by folding the tube around the end, creating a noose and securing it with zip ties. After moving a lot of stuff on bikes I've found that inner tubes still make the best and cheapest holding straps. I've never had a store-bought strap that I liked better.
Great! Good idea!
awesome
Hi Phil, cheers from Romania! How much current did you use for welding the stays together? I've tried tig welding old bike parts a few times but I ended up with nothing but holes. Thanks!
Hm I'm not sure but I would guess I probably used something around 50 amps. It also depends on the kind of welder you're using though. Bike tubing is usually really thin and hard to weld with MIG or Stick because like you said you get holes very quick.
Love your work and the videos! Tig is so quiet, if only they could make grinders and grinding quiet too.
exactly!..........this just inspired me to make my next full suspension cargo bike but, i got assholes for neighbors that love to complain about noise!
Can you weld aluminium with no grinding? I think you can.
600$ + CAD for a custom front rack
noice
Everything about this is right.
why so close to the tire? bend it higher
Because you want a low center of gravity for good handling and also space underneath the handlebar to actually have space on the rack. It needs to be as low as possible
Круто!
It won't survive the 1st crash... and there will be a 1st crash, and second. Weld up whatever non-suspended support you want but the rack itself should be some synthetic material that can absorb even minor impacts. You should look into being able to build a suspended front rack, it makes the ride so much better, safer, and more stable under a load.
Beautiful work but once again I fail to understand the point of adding 20kg of inner tubes to the rack...
They keep smaller objects from falling through the gaps. You can also use them to strap things down, for example I just slide my U-Lock under them and it stays there. They provide a lot of friction so things don't slide around. Due to their flexibility they reduce hard bumps in the road which protects both the cargo and the bike. They provide a softer surface so objects don't get scratched up by the rack. They also protect the paint on the rack. They work better for holding down cargo than any commercially produced strap I ever bought due to their friction and large amount of stretch. They are quick to install or replace. And they cost me absolutely nothing because I get the used ones for free from friends and bike shops. And one of them weighs like 200 grams so for 20kg I would need use 100 of them... I used two for this rack. Need any more reasons?
A dir poco orrendo
Butt ugly but highly functional and inexpensive.
