The Ultimate Police Cars of 1970s

  • Did you know that cop cars have to be both tough and fast? They need to carry police gear, transport prisoners, and be nimble enough to chase speedy cars. They also have to be strong enough to handle rough driving, like rolling over curbs and bouncing over medians. Plus, they must be comfortable for officers to sit in during long shifts. And all this has to come at a low price because they are bought by government agencies.
Since the mid-1950s, automakers have built special models just for police use. These cars start as regular sedans or coupes but are made stronger and more durable to handle the tough life of a patrol car.
Here is a list of The Ultimate Police Cars of 1970s.
    0:00 Intro
    0:41 9. 1965-1997 Porsche 911
    1:42 8. 1972-1974 AMC Matador Enforcer

    3:49 6. 1968-1970 Plymouth Belvedere Pursuit
    4:44 5. 1974-1993 Dodge Ram charger
    5:45 4. 1955 Buick Century 68
    6:52 3. 1969 Dodge Polara 440

Late 70:s Dodge Monaco and Plymouth Fury, these were featured in lots of tv shows and movies in the late 70:s and early 80:s 👍
As for other eras : Chevrolet Caprice and Ford Crown Victoria.
Also the picture of the Black and white Porsche 911 which says : POLIS on the door, is from Sweden, yes, in the 1970:s, 13 Porsches were used on the Swedish motorways to catch speeders, pretty interesting fact.
Another very popular police car in Sweden in the 70:s was the Plymouth Valiant, which was loved for it's size and it's great Slant 6 engine 👍

    You know what this is?
    Jim Reed:
Yes sir, it's a police car.
    Pete Malloy:
This black and white patrol car has an overhead valve V8 engine. It develops 325 horsepower at 4800 RPM's. It accelerates from 0 to 60 in seven seconds; it has a top speed of 120 miles an hour. It's equipped with a multi channeled DFE radio and an electronic siren capable of admitting three variables, wail, yelp, and alert. It also serves as an outside radio speaker and public address system. The automobile has two shotgun racks, one attached to the bottom portion of the front seat, one in the vehicle trunk. Attached to the middle of the dash, illuminated by a single bulb is a hot sheet desk. Fastened to which you will always make sure is the latest one off the teletype before you ever roll.

Just a little FYI for anyone curious.
I am a Little Rock police officer of 24 years, the first 8 as an Arkansas State Trooper.
One car that remains loved as a law enforcement platform is the Ford Panther platform. 1979-2012. Mostly, by far, the Crown Victoria.
I attended many law enforcement conventions nationwide through the years, and that car is still a legend with us.
There was even a nationwide petition to Ford asking them to continue that platform, at least as a law enforcement only car.
Easy to fix, tough as beaver teeth, and reliable as a tire iron. My wife even still has her 2011 Lincoln Town Car. She has refused a new car for 9 years now.
Most of us have transformed to the Explorer with police specs, and it is an incredible replacement. If anyone finds one for sale, *BUY IT*
But man, those Crown Vics will always be legendary with law enforcement all over North America.

I'm a retired police officer from LAPD Los Angeles Police Department! The one unique police vehicle I didn't see in this video was the AMC Javelin? I remember the Alabama State Police special ordered several Javelins for their patrol duties, primarily targeted as used as a pursuit car! I believe they had a 3 or 4 year run from 1971 to 1974? They, of course, were a fast back sport coupe similar to the Mustang 5.0, but without any rear seat capacity? Equipped with the indestructible dynamic 401 V8 4bbl, but I think they were all automatic transmissions? If nothing else, they were awesome looking! They were the reason my very first car I bought at 17 years old was a 1972 AMC Javelin with the 401 V8 4bbl dual exhaust California registered car. I bought it used in 1977 with 28,000 original miles from the original owner. I paid $2,500 for it, and it was by far one of the best running cars I ever owned, and I kick myself every time I wonder why I sold it 2 years later? Stupid kid I was! That Javelin was black with dark blue interior, and believe me, it was a total "chicken magnet!" I had more girlfriends than I could handle when I owned that car. I think I spent every weekend driving to the beach in Santa Monica or driving to Santa Barbara. That car was FAST FAST AND FAST!!
Anyway, the Alabama State Police AMC Javelin should have been covered in your survey, I believe?
      Thanks 😊

On 130 octane Avgas I hit 560. On the street I had to pull out easy so as to avoid blowing up my ring gear. By the 150 foot mark I was spooled up and had 20 pounds of boost ( 15 on 94 octane Sunoco) I smoked many a Mustang and camero both street and strip. One night I was coming home and I didn’t see the state trooper in his caprice 9c1. I saw the lights coming off the exit and I stood on it. He couldn’t catch up. I was way too far to get a plate read and like most imports I had a police scanner in my car. They might be fast enough but not against something that was built to decimate all. After I lost the state trooper on the highway I got off the highway and went backroads home. I outran him before he could get a plate, color or make. Actually, modern police cars have the same powertrain as their civilian counterparts. Because they are at least 150 lbs heavier than their civvy twins due to equipment added they are slower. In the case of the popular Dodge Charger the difference is larger as LEO cars get the old 5 speed auto instead of the superior Mercedes 8 speed, they also have a low gear lockout at 25 mph. This means that LEO Chargers are a full second slower in the quarter mile, running low 14s vs low 13s.
Those planning to flee should know that some highway patrols, including FHP are using 392 Charger 'Scat Packs'. With these 6.4L 485 hp HEMI's they run mid 12's and top out at 168 mph. [sources: ALLPAR forums, C/D and Motor Trend mags]

It depends on what kind of service, it is ordered for. City cars, are built with low differential gears, to get up to speed quickly, to catch people. Highway cars are built with high end differentials, for high speed pursuit. I drove a highway car, that was going to Georgia in the late 70s. It was slow off the line, but at 50 mph, it would set you back in the seat.

Noting that some who watch this and videos like this actually drove police vehicles from the 70s and 80s and having differing opinions, I’ll offer mine. As durability is a desirable feature for a police car, I don’t think any of them match the reputations established by the 60s - 70s Dodges and Plymouths, although the Crown Victoria PIs from the mid 80s through the end of the line are pretty hard to beat. The SSP Mustangs as well as the consumer 5.0s we’re great cars and affordable, but had a tendency to overheat as the speedometer needle hit 130 mph. The three-core radiator wasn’t sufficient to keep the 302 cool at sustained high rpms. The Border Patrol bought its last Ramchargers in 1985. They were not anything special other than local “war wagon conversions” to defend against rock attacks - might have had a heavy duty alternator but the engines were 318 two barrels. The last one i drove seemed to have a top speed of about 75. The Broncos with independent front suspensions handled better on and off the road, and took a pretty good beating. Not mentioned but should have been were the last of the 70s B-body Plymouths and Dodges. They were great police vehicles. The Matadors and a o as were never popular in my part of the world. When one department decided to go small, they did it with six cylinder Volaris. Not a stellar moment. The Novas got a lot of media attention - at least from the magazines, but don’t think they sold all that well. I seem to remember a magazine article on smaller police vehicles from 1975 which featured the Nova. Volvo had entered their 164e police car as used by Swedish police. Performance wise, it was close to the Nova. Remember in the 70 s, American law enforcement was used to operating with full frame passenger cars with big trunks and decent interior space. None of the “compacts” of the time had big trunks or decent interior space except for the Volvo, and they cost too much. American fleet maintenance wasn’t always that great so something like a Porsche 911 was a non starter.

You didn’t see the downsized 1979 to 1983 Malibu 9C1s the pa state police got cursed with. They had the 305 mini small block to make matters worse. For sone reason they served ( fairly briefly) alongside the 1983 and up box Caprice 9c1 ( much preferred over the Malibu) and the first 1984 and up Ford Crown Victoria P71s

    • @sombra6153
      @sombra6153 Před měsícem

@@matthewcaughey8898 my home town department replaced six cylinder Volaris with V-8 Fairmonts that were the converted to propane, then the Malibus. The Malibus at that department may have been V-6s, although I may be confusing them with the full size non PI Chevys that the department had to “borrow” from one of the utility departments and install radios, lights and sirens because the budget at the time did not include enough to keep the fleet running. Seems like by the mid 80s everyone started getting tired of that drama and buying vehicles more intended for LE use. During the Volari days, air conditioner belts were even removed so officers couldn’t needlessly waste gas on hot days. I became an explorer in the late 70s but didn’t begin my LE career until 1990. Nevertheless, there were still examples from the mid 80s still in the fleets so I got to enjoy both the mid 80s Crowns and Caprices. Was exposed to 70s Plymouths, Torinos, LTDs and LTD IIs, and Volaris from the explorer program. Those late 70s Malibus were popular with drag racers later on.

@@AMERICAN-AUTOS OK so if you want some advice, here goes from a video editor: stick to one transition, at the most two. The simple 0.8 second fade in/fade out transition is a classic. Things are called classic because they work and are the best. There is also no need to switch from black-and-white to color and back-and-forth again. Just stick to color. Your excessive use of transitions from the entire catalog actually takes away from the good video content. Thanks!
