Haven’t seen the film but have lived in Nigeria and so I can tell you that MEND is a real political movement in the region. Nigeria where MEND is operating was colonized by the British (nearby nations are Francophone though). This film sounds like it resonates with themes in African-made films of the last decade. I look forward to seeing it if it comes to Maine (or to streaming?)

Just saw this film in cinema, thought it was great. The score, the similarities between night life and the spiritual village especially - although the extras in the club seemed a little stiff, plus echoes of colonial guilt evades no ones, not even those only "French by spilled blood," were profound. Alex embodied this guilt insofar he became his victim, metaphysically killed by his own action. I did notice the scratches on his neck after the sargent telling him to improve/being stripped by his comrades after visiting Jomo's sister- still curious the reasoning there. The pacing from the death of Mikael / Boot camp / Being fully trained felt a little rushed (boot camp too long?). But the vast variety of shots kept me hooked - Exploring the night vision / light bursts. The repetitive river elment. Again, the score was amazing in cinema. I stayed until the end to hear it.
The 'supernatural' like part Joseph notes is a 'local culture' believe perhaps, that's what a mirror ball is to Disco age 😉and, the grass is *not* always greener on the other side...🙁yet, there's a dream to make it😊
