Thanks for this video definitely getting one. 2 years ago I went off grid to a Whitby goth weekend on the cliff top site and decided to use the fridge on gas, without going into to much retraumatising details the van nearly went up in smoke from a gas leak from the fridge. Just caught the flame in time but there was some worktop damage I had to replace and a few months for the smoke smell to vanish. Definitely getting one for my new to us Swift and thank you very much for this video again.

@@HelenandDave Yes it was the most frightening experience to date because I walked back into the van into a cloud of smoke and noticed flames coming out of the top of the fridge/under the kitchen work top area so I immediately ran back outside and picked up the red water bucket the site event organizers had in various positions around the site and drenched it all to put the flames out, some say not to use water but I didn't have time to think about it because any longer I know I would of lost the van for certain. We plan on off gridding again in 2024 but very much doubt il ever use the fridge in a caravan on gas again unattended, just to risky in my humble opinion especially when nobody is in the van. Sounds a sensible idea Dave. Like yourself it hadn’t previously occurred to me but now it seems almost like an essential piece of kit. We thought we could smell gas last time out and this would probably have confirmed or refuted our suspicions straight away.

Hi Dave n Helen, just bought our first gas bottle this week after buying our first caravan 2 months ago, so will defo be adding this must have item to our caravan list of must have's. There is also one other item I bought recently from a popular cheap-skate website - a caravan front cover. Unfortunately 2 of the retaining straps broke and wouldn't tighten properly (cost less than 20 quid) and defo wouldn't trust it to stay on the van over speeds of 7 mph. So do you have any recommendations for a decent front cover that protects front of the van when travelling and the straps don't break when you sneeze on them, but doesn't cost the earth. Thank you, Kev.
Hi Kev, like you we have had a couple of cheapy towing covers and what we found on both occasions is that they actually damage the caravan. We ended up buying a cover that was expensive, good quality and purpose made for our caravan from Specialised Covers.
Expensive but brilliant. I think the best alternative is don’t bother, cheap tow covers are not worth it in my opinion.
