  • Southern 722 and Southern 4501 doubleheading on the Southern 3-b North District. The trip was from Birmingham, Al to Selma, Al 4-27-1974. This is only a 9 minute sample from the hour long tape. From the Atkinson family recordings.

      IC Steamboat whistle

      It was a Illinois Central 3-chime steamboat whistle. The Southern Railway based their long-bell Ps4 3 chimes on the Illinois Central, albeit with the some slight modifications.

      It’s probably not heard because 4501’s bell is much louder than 722’s, and it gets the job of a warning device done better.
