Top 10 cultural facts about Cameroon:
1- Don't do eye contact with an older person when addressing them. Or a person higher up in hierarchy to you.
2- Don't offer a hand for a handshake to a more noble person or an older person, it's consider disrespectful when a younger and/or less noble person offers the hand in a handshake.
3- Don't offer a left hand for a handshake, it's disrespectful unless the right hand is incapacitated.
4- Don't use first names to address an acquaintance unless you have been given the greenlight to. Use mister or madam.
5- Cameroonians use aunties to address younger women, even when they're strangers and uncles for younger men, try to do same.
Older persons can be addressed as sirs or madams. You can use papa or mama for acquaintances.
6- Don't enter someone's carpeted room with your shoes on, even if they're clean. It's disrespectful.
7- When you meet someone first in a place of meeting, you as the new arrival offer a greeting first.
Always offer a greeting when meeting people it is considered very disrespectful otherwise.
8-Be sensitive to the dressing and music in the environment. Cameroonians like people to dress the part as appropriate to their circumstances. Eg people dress up for church and get togethers. It's seen as disdainful to dress down to such events.
Cameroonians are also particular about their music which they consider some of the best in the world, don't be harsh to judge it openly.
9- When offered food in a meeting, do oblige your host. Always turning down food is considered disrespectful except for health reasons.
10- Aside from music, be careful about debates on politics, religion and sexuality here. While Cameroonians are some of the most open-minded and friendlier people on the continent, they can be quite limited in their worldview on these subjects as well.
Also soccer /football and language disparities especially comparing english with french can be dicey topics here.

Also, do not cross legs in front of authority figures. That is a sign of disrespect. Hands folded on lap and feet firmly planted on ground ( without legs being crossed)while seated is a sign of respect. I learned this when visiting Cameroon ( specifically members of the royal family in Foumban). One of my travel mates offended Momafon by crossing her legs ( and smacking gum, UGGGH!) . What seems like common sense to some, really isn't. Cultural practices are important to know and respect! Thank you for your very helpful list!

    • @IamGodSon
      @IamGodSon Před 6 měsíci +1

@@pkp6791 it's disrespectful to chew gum in front of elders in many cultures. While crossing of legs has seen a lot of tolerance lately, it's still very disrespectful in front of royalty.
Mind you, even before the european royal families, most of these protocols apply.

@@IamGodSon Yes. Chewing gum is bad enough, but smacking it is the height of disrespect. No need for comparisons to Europe. As far as Im concerned, every culture has its own unique cultural values and should be respected-European influenced or not. We have to give respect to expect respect.

Cameroon is mostly safer than New york and way safer than chicago. The security issues is way too exxagerated.
You CAN call people by their names, once you have been introduced. Just don't use first names, it's not always seen as appropriate for acquaintances. Use Mister or miss/madam before names or when meeting a stranger. Better still use uncle/aunties for younger persons and sirs/madams for older. The english speaking people particularly like using family-type words of endearment when been addressed. So you can call older persons papa or mama when addressing them even if they're total strangers.

Cameroon is a wonderful country. It is truly a mini-Africa without any doubt. The country has been held down by their despotic government under Paul Biya who has become a paranoid dictator. France has left him in place to protect their interests in Cameroon and it has strangled the country’s development. Cameroon should not be where it is today if their senile paramount leader had not destroyed the country and underdeveloped its economy and people. The country has everything to be a power house in Africa. It’s a great pity to see humanitarian aid in a place with the most fertile soil and resources because of a power hungry elite led by Mr Biya.

As for the poverty in Cameroon, I doubt it is worse than elsewhere but such as it is - it is presumably due (as it essentially always is ) to procreation exceeding resources but as we know the answer is increasing the GDP as there are few brakes on population growth more effective than affluence. The blame for the incorrigible grinding poverty of course is a corrupt, ineffective, unimaginative, incompetent, over-reaching, government that is implicitly expert at constructing obstacles to freedom, entrepreneurship, and obtuse to laying the infrastructure permissive for a private sector that can self-organize solutions to all of it's societies problems and challenges. This of course very comfortably endorses the extremely safe opinion that the Camaroonians collectively are a very intelligent capable people

You don't seem to understand what he means by a 'safe country' ! He means safe to go out on your own, for a walk for example or a bicycle ride. There are parts of cities in America and other parts of the world where you will be robbed if you did not know that they are unsafe. A safe country does not always have to do with migration and seeking asylum!
