Please post when you figure out the problem! Mine is having the same issue. I suspect it’s in the gearbox because when I put the car in sport mode it goes away.

thanks for posting that information Larry... thats very interesting.
I'll try the same test as soon as I get a chance and report back here. Shan't be for a few days though as I need to finish the kitchen replacement and other stuff first and the car has been laid up for the Winter but I.ll try a test before next weekend.

@@larrygulley2734 that could be a clue to the source of the problem . My suspension is in a very poor condition and I need to replace 3x strut inserts and numerous bushes . I wondered if the noise was due to the car 'squatting' at the rear when accelerating causing something to rub somewhere .
Thinking about the noise ....it doesn't vary in pitch or speed at all no matter what speed or direction I drive so that pretty much rules out the drive shafts , wheel bearings and transmission components I should have thought. I'm surprised that there are no records of this problem on the forums or youtube.

@@johncooper7242 I now have gearbox fault so I guess I’ll try fluid & filter change & go from there? P0706 transmission range sensor . I really thought it was in the drivetrain at first but now I’m convinced it’s in the transmission! FRUSTRATING

@@larrygulley2734 Changing the gearbox filter and oil is always a good move when its not known when it was last changed . I need to do mine as the car hasn't been serviced or well maintained by the Po . Amazingly it went through the MOT 2x weeks ago with just a faulty rear light !... not bad for a 96.
Don't forget to look out for a crack in the gearbox valve body casing which is a very common fault. www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/xk8-cracked-gearbox-valve-body-zf-5hp24-151994/

Hi thanks for your message. As soon as I discover the cause of this noise i'll update this video but for the time being the car still runs ok and its being laid up for the Winter so its unlikely I'll tackle this issue until the Spring .
I do not get any transmission codes show up with my car. interestingly ..I have noticed that the noise is not always there....it seems to start when either I go over a pothole or bump in the road ......or if I floor the throttle and the car squats at the rear , that also starts the grinding noise.
If you watch my latest video on power steering you can hear the noise starts after I hit a pothole.!
because of this I am convinced the source of the problem is in the rear suspension ......
Either a loose cross member mounting point or a worn strut insert or maybe wishbone bushes or drop links etc. That is where I am going to start looking.

If it was the transmission you'd probably feel it through the gear leaver. If it's bearings it would squeal, sounds to me that something is rubbing metal on metal when going over bumps or potholes. I'd imagine if it's the rear struts the back end would feel looser. Sounds to me one or more of your rear bushings is going or gone, you can try silicon spray and try to see if that helps for a cheap fix. If it's not been taken care of by the po like my xkr was they will have these problems. Mine keeps creaking everytime I go over a bump, turns out it's the top strut mount on the far side suspension.
The suspension on these cars were badly done with the bushing, I've read on forums they've only last 25-30k miles with the originals. I'm gonna replace all mine with polybushes which will improve handling performance as well.
They're lovely cars but they need to come to modern standards to make them even more appealing. No matter what they'll increase in value so they're worth having the upgrades done just don't break the bank. Also another thing make sure your secondary timing tensioners are done, it's crucial you have these replaced with the MK3 (metal ones). Cost me £300 for gaskets, 8x spark plugs, 8x ignition coils and the tensioners all in. Did the labour myself and saved myself a lot of money doing so. Lovely car by the way keep the videos coming, gonna try taking that fuse out tomorrow see if it makes a difference for me

For traction control messages could mean your car battery is low, also could mean abs module is faulty, faulty wheel speed sensor. Reading on forums that these cars are very voltage sensitive so check the battery first. Go to Halfords and have them check your battery and alternator, they do it for free so it's a win win.
Worse comes to worse practice a hard reset by disconnecting the negative cable and touching it to the positive post. Just remember to reset the windows after doing this, don't want you damaging your rubber sills/ roof. They're not so cheap to replace.
Buy yourself DNS code reader for your car which I paid £25 for on Amazon but you can find them on eBay too. They do the job and can find the major gremlins you need to diagnose the problems. No point guessing on a car that has over 50 computers which tell you what's going on with it 😂

@@xkr-mat Hi thanks for your detailed imput which is much appreciated. I saw it in the early hours this morning but was too tired to respond.
The gearbox is electronic so not a direct linkage as in a manual gearbox but saying that, any vibration in the car will probably be felt most through the gear shift stick and the steering wheel or pedals.
Dry bearings do squeal ie alternators and water pumps but wheel and prop bearings mostly seem to rumble and set up a vibration. I've tested all the wheel bearings and they are fine.
My feeling on this is that somewhere metal is grinding on metal .The noise only seems to occur when the car is accelerated hard or goes over bumps or holes in the road. Its random, sometimes there for a a few seconds then gone again but it is always at exactly the same frequency and speed never varying so that pretty much eliminates the engine and transmission components .
My thoughts are that this noise is due to wear or failure in the rear wishbone bushes, v mounts , suspension components, propshaft mounts /bearings etc . Until I can get the car up in the air Its just speculation of course .
The car was abused and driven into the ground by the po. First job I had was to replace both front anti-roll bar hangers and the NS shock absorber and upper wishbone bushes . I have the other 3x struts and wishbones to do in the Spring.
Let me know what you think of the power steering hack I'd be interested to get some feedback

@@xkr-mat My battery is new but is always a little under par . because of a parasitic drain I have to disconnect it after every trip which is a right pita. Sometimes if the car has been stood for a while and the battery is around 12v the engine coughs and splutters for a while until the battery gets charged a little. I must find that drain and have all the necessary test equipment but nowhere to work on the car currently which is very frustrating.
I have a DNS reader but I have not tried connecting it yet. My car is a early 96 convertible so I may need a special adaptor ...that's when I actually find the OBD2 socket lol. I have been admiring the Icarsoft reader at around £125 which looks the mutts nuts.

Not yet had a chance to get the car on a ramp for inspection but its beginning to look like a rear wheel bearing issue rather than the gearbox...hopefully the case

@@h7pubg still not had a chance to investigate this noise yet. The car is stored in a place with no access for repair at the moment . I'll update the video when I find the cause but my suspicion is it has to be the rear suspension or transmission /braking components. The noise doesn't seem to be coming from the gearbox and is intermittent usually under acceleration or going over bumps in the road
