    I am fortunate to have the 35mm f2 & the 33mm f1.4. The 33mm is tack sharp at f1.4 & has beautiful colors & bokeh.The 35mm f2 is a fantastic EDC lens for casual shooting & has a beautiful rendering in it’s own right. 😊

      That's awesome! YES, I used to have my 35mm f2 that I loved so much. Have taken most of my favorite images ever on it. It stayed glued on my X-Pro3 when I had it until I got the 33mm. I use the 50mm f2 a lot and it makes me miss the 35mm f2. Damn Fujifilm haha. Well said, Jeff!

    Really nice review. I like the calmness of just a voice-over and some honest opinions and sample pictures. I think where the 33mm focal length shines for me is impromptu portraits and 'product' type of shots, where you isolate a subject but don't go overboard with compression (coffee cups, flowers, etc.). I have a 35mm f2 and used it many times for family photography, the focal length is very suited for that. I am thinking to upgrade to this 33m f1,4 for better colors and quality though.

      Really appreciate the super nice words man - I try and differentiate myself from everyone out there even though it's tough. This site is very saturated but I still think there's room for some folks who cover Fujifilm to do it a bit differently. Thank you though!
      And yes, I think the 23mm f1.4 is the lens for you (per my other comment). You'll be so happy! I know it. Can't wait to see what you produce with it! Is there anywhere that you share your photography at?

    I don't mind carrying a heavy lens, so have been loving my 16-55 f2.8 for daytime street photos in London (I use a short wrist strap to take half the weight off of my fingers). But the 33mm f1.4 is coming in the post, to enable me to carry on into the dark winter evenings after work. Should be lovely :)
    I already have the old (non WR) 56mm f1.2 but I don't think its autofocus is up to the job for busy night time activity, and it crops a bit too tight for my style (I like people quite big in a photo, but I still like the background to be a big part of the story).

      @@LorencCala The XT4 no I would never use it for anything other than just hobby photography. The autofocus is too hit or miss. In perfect lighting it works really nicely but any challenging situations it really struggles. The XT4 is a great hobbyist camera you can get really good results when you are just shooting for fun without any pressure and can slow down a bit. The new XH2S though AF is supposed to be much closer to Canon so that one might be viable for pro work.

      That 56mm f1.2 II will be INSANE

    • @halfalligator6518
      @halfalligator6518 Před rokem

      good idea. That cropped "sports mode" comes in handy for that. In the past I might not have done such a thing very much (unless bird photography), but with 40MP and lenses that can resolve those pixels perfectly... doing some cropping to turn a 18mm into a 23mm is smart. Try doing it in-camera rather than post.... I'd prefer getting a feel for the adjusted 23mm through the viewfinder.. You also get that breathing space on the sides of the EFV to anticipate moving objects. Faster write speed probably too.
      Your two lens choices are perfect imho and I'm thinking of doing the same one day. If your cash flow agrees you could in the future get the new pancake 27mm for that extra portability. I can vouch for that lens and it's as sharp as any of these new lenses from what I can tell. If you ever want to go telephoto but not too serious about it I also recommend the 70-300. It's not the fastest lens but it's tack sharp, very small and light and decently priced. I'm making some wild assumptions here about your needs but for me anyway that 4 lens combo is like the smallest collection that covers all bases really well without breaking the bank. 18mm for landscape and crop 23mm street. 33mm 1.4 for everything (night photography too along with the 18mm). Pancake for taking advantage of tiny Fuji things. And 70-300 zoom for wildlife, travel/hiking or whatever telephoto needs necessary (it's also a fantastic image stabilized "macro" lens especially with a quality macro filter attached - it's ridiculous actually that this doesn't get more mention). I'm not a huge zoom guy but because I don't do crazy amounts of telephoto except wildlife/travel the 70-300 covers a great range and is fairly compact.

  • @Hartmut_B_Dus
    @Hartmut_B_Dus Před 2 lety +4

    The 33er has now replaced my 35mm 1.4. Compared to the 35mm it is in the corners sharper, has a higher resolution, a faster autofocus and weather protection. So it is superior to the 35 in all, and there is only one disadvantage: it is almost twice as heavy.

    • @oxeneers
      @oxeneers  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes, that only disadvantage is definitely worth noting. However, I do believe that this thing is resolving detail that previous wasn't able to be resolved by any lens in the XF lineup prior to this. The 18mm is great but the 33mm, due to its field of view, seemingly pulls details that could not have been seen before. It's that impressive.

    Great review! Considering getting this, lens but I have another question that is XPRO related.
    I am a headshot and portrait photographer, working in a small home studio with strobes and I also do a lot of headshot shoots with natural light. I have an XT3 and most recently, a X100V, and I’ve fallen seriously in love with the rangefinder style of the X100 series. So much so, that I’m considering selling the XT3 to get the XPRO3. I’d love your thoughts on that. I actually like the idea of the “hidden” LCD, and I love the connection with my subject when I look through a rangefinder style camera. It’s intimate and I can feel the camera get out of the way. It feels good to have an eye on my subject.
    I have no problem with the XT3, it’s great and reminds me of the old Nikon FE that I trained on as a teen.
    I just feel a deep connection to rangefinder style. I trained on film, shooting since I was 13, and something about the analog feel of the XPRO is calling to me, but unsure how it would be for professional headshots and portraits, and as a studio camera. Although I see no reason why it wouldn’t be.
    Would you feel confident to have the XPRO as a main portrait and even a studio camera? Could it replace my XT3?
    I also occasionally shoot family portraits and small events, occasionally a wedding. My work is all about people and the human connection to clients.
    Thanks for any thoughts! I trust your expertise.

    • @oxeneers
      @oxeneers  Před rokem +2

      Yes! To all of the above. There are a few folks on here that use the X-Pro professionally as their "A" portrait cam and get great results. Obviously, for you, the shooting style will produce your best work so the answer is yes. For me, the X-T3 probably would produce the best work for me but my nose always hits the screen and constantly smudges it so the rangefinder style was always preferred for me. I've since left my X-Pro3 and moved to the GFX50S II and X-H2S, but I miss the incredible experience of the X-Pro3. There's nothing like it.
      I would definitely do it because you just are "go go go" with the X-Pro versus a lot slower on the other bodies.

However, the 23 mm is quite pricey, it‘s another 100 to 150 € on top. But at the end, that‘s not the most important question. I do occasionally thing about the Zeiss Touit variants, but they were introduced in 2013 so I‘m a bit concerned about the autofocus, I prefer something snappy. I’m so close to getting an xpro3, but I mostly shot the x100v using the back screen, rarely the viewfinder. So the back screen of the xpro3 just seems not ideal for me. I don’t like flip out screens, so xh2 is out. And not crazy I’m love with xt5. Maybe they will drop an xpro4 with a screen like the x100v. Or maybe I should get an xe4.

    If only it would focus correctly with the Pro3… tried this 33 and the new 18 1.4 on 2 different Pro3 bodies and there is a ridiculous front focusing issue with both lenses
    Could be that the OVF just does not work properly, as I had similar things happening on my ex-100V

      @@oxeneers I found the error in the meantime. Its a general Fujifilm AF fault. Also talked to the official Fuji support. The cameras just cant focus consistently on a stationary object.
      The wider the lens, the further away from the object and the stronger the light, the worse….
      So ironically the cameras only focus quite reliably close up and in lower light situations.
      Example which is also to be found in the internet: Keep focusing on the exact same stationary object and watch the AF distance scale jump around… its ridiculous how so few people notice and very sad, as I just today returned my 4th and last Fuji body:(

      I would do the 23mm f1.4 Mk II and just use an IBIS body like the X-T4 or the X-H2S. There's nothing at that equivalent that has OIS other than the 10-24 but that isn't nearly as sharp at 24mm.

      @@caterinadisalvo1477 I am not a huge fan of the OVF - full disclosure - but it certainly does not give you the same experience that having the full OVF on, say, a 23mm f2 does. So it's a tradeoff. But the 33mm is such an amazing lens that if you can learn to work with the OVF and the longer barrel in the shot, it is worth it if you're an OVF die hard.
