  • I decided to hit the streets of Vancouver with the brand new Fujifilm XF33mm f/1.4 R LM WR and compare it against the XF35mm f/1.4 R for street photography. I walked with my videographer Chris Giannakkos aka ChrisMeetsChris from Gastown and into Chinatown to see how both these lenses performed. I also brought along the new XF18mm f/1.4 R LM WR just for fun. Come join us as we dodge cars, talk to a sneaker head, and finally end up inside a coffee shop. Trying to take candid photos of my toddler got me to upgrade my older XF 35mm lens. The autofocus noise always gave away what I was doing and the candid moments would be lost. In the street the noise isn't that big of a deal but using the faster/quieter autofocus to track my toddler or stealth shoot makes the upgrade worth it. Excited for the 33mm f1.4 as I do miss the shallow depth of field the old 35mm gave me.

    I'm going to admit I prefer the look of a character lens, but I'm impressed with the extreme sharpness, perfectly corrected style lenses coming out today. I'm still not feeling the weight though. Street should be small light and simple. I'm thinking this (35 f1.4 ) older lens is perfect for an XT-30.

    I have the 35mmf2 for 4 years and this year got super curious about the f1,4. The first time I attached the lens to my camera I realized the reason why people praise this lens so much, its rendering has something unique. It reminded me of the Nikon series E 50mm f1,8 the first lens I shot with and still my favorite glass.

    I've been considering either the 23mm, 35mm, or 50mm in f2. I only have the 18-55mm right now and have an X-T3. I'd like a prime for shooting portraits. The top dogs like the 56mm are just not in my budget. Thoughts about which would be the best affordable prime for portraits. At this point, the portraits would be outdoor/natural light portraits. I do have a Canon FD 50mm f1.8 that I love to use on the X-T3, but would like some with AF as well.

      Depending how fast the action is, but for general purpose it’s still good on the older bodies. I was just trying to use it to capture bike riders and it just wasn’t fast enough. But if you’re capturing people walking casually, then it’s fast enough.

    I purged myself of all my "Fujiluxes"...the 35mm makes too much noise and the 23 and 16 are heavy and just take up too much space in the bag and the 56 is also slow to focus. I've gone all in on the f2s. cheaper, lighter and quieter. I did however spurge for the 18 1.4 the 16 was too wide for me. Never used it but the 18 seems to be a great replacement for the 16/23 that I can use indoors, museums and at night. As to bokeh and "character" I think the 50 f2 is good enough (compared to 23/35 1.4 but not the 56 of course). If I ever want to really do fancy portraits, I'll go for the viltrox 85 have somewhere around here. Question is with all these nice prime lenses should I just ditch my 16-80 zoom!

However I’m personally not liking the size, weight and styling of these newer lenses even though I’m sure they are amazing to shoot with. I just got the Fuji XT3 and the new 33mm F1.4 Fuji lens. When I am on Aperture priority mode I can see and hear the aperture blades constantly opening and closing. The lens makes a pretty distinct clicking noise constantly. However on the Fuji X100V the aperture blades are completely silent when opening and closing. Is there something wrong with the 33mm lens? Why is the 33mm making that clicking noise but the X100V is silent?

  • @thehotdoglover
    @thehotdoglover Před 2 lety

    The 35mm 1.4 is a beautiful lens, but people who say it doesn’t miss focus very much must not be shooting people who move a whole lot. I use burst mode and pray for an in focus shot with my kids, usually end up with some keepers, but it’s definitely not super reliable like most modern lenses. The AF is the main tradeoff of the lens. The images are very soft and filmic though so it’s a tough decision to keep it or not.

  • @remektekmedia6641

    Bottom line: All Fujifilm XF lenses are great! With the 33mm vs 35mm lenses IMHO it comes down to price, size, AF speed. As for me personally, I have no issues sticking with my 35mm lens. And for street, I would always pick my X100V either as is (23mm lens) or one of the 2 adaptors (effective 18mm or 35mm).

    • @kyakaze
      @kyakaze Před rokem +2

      Compared to 187g of the 35mm, yes😅. It's not just about the weight of the lenses alone. When using the new 23mm or 33mm, it's heavier, especially front heavy. It's not so comfortable with the grip (I'm using x-t5) and therefore I had to use smallrig lplate grip, which adds more weight. All the little things add up and it becomes bulky for street. I ended up selling the 33 for 35mm because the x-t5 already compensates for the AF speed of the 35mm, which is enough for me, I don't shoot fast moving obj or such things anw.
      I don't know why but when I had the new 23 and 33, I used to shoot with 23 much more. But after switching back to 35f1.4, I used 35f1.4 more 😮, then I decided to sell 23f1.4 wr for 23f2 for backup when it's getting narrow or in bad weather 😂.

    The thing is that the newer lens makes AF-C usable. I love, love, love my 35, but AF-C is absolutely horrible and far from usable, expecially with Face-Detection. The 33 blow the old lens out of the water in terms of AF-C speed and reliability.
    And I strongly disagree with the complains regarding size and weight. Seriously?! That is more or less a big protein bar with an apple in my photo bag. No issue at all carrying that all day long :) And regarding the "magic" of the old 35: Yes, it is a fantastic piece of gear. But it shows its age in some respect and I have lost two copies of the lens because of slightly bumping the front tubus while in action. It is a fragile lens.
    The lens delivers fantastic image quality and deserves some love, but please, it was and is far from perfect (and by perfect I don't mean clinical sharpness). Oh, btw. the newer 33 1.4 has also some "mojo" and is as well far from clinical. It depends (as always) from your usage.
    What a time to be an amateur: XC35F2, XF35F2, XF35F1.4, XF33 1.4... man that is a really exquisite choice! For all budgets and for all requirements

      I think the size argument comes from the long touted “Fuji is better than full frame because of size” that came from the community. Now that advantage is mostly gone , so if you got into Fuji for the compactness, then I can see why you’d be slightly disappointed. The old lenses still work fine though. But for people who want small and fast (like the 35 1.4), they’ll have no upgrade path in the future.

    33 f1.4 looks clinical compared to 35.This is what you get when you put nice peace of meat in to grinding machine, I guess expensive hamburger.On 33 light is absorbed chewed and spit out at the rear end in near perfect way,missing the pleasing esthetic and character.With weight ,size and price Fuji going in to FF territory.

      The new lens is very nice and worth the price, but I don't think it's for everyone. For a street shooter, I think the older lens is fine. If you're doing video or hybrid work, the new lens makes sense. They also hinted that these new lenses can resolve for the next generation of cameras and sensors, so we might not see its true potential until the next generation of sensors and processors come out. Let's see what happens.

    These new lenses in Australia are pushing $1500 each so not $200 more than the F1.4 35mm original, more like twice as much, what a joke! Fujifilm are starting to loose their way.

      I wonder why the pricing is so different in Australia. Do you have heavy import tariffs or duties?
