Romanticism Explained through Paintings

- The opening thumbnail shows Lake Geneva: a beautiful body of water surrounded by the sublime Swiss Alps. But it's also a place with a dark past. The torturous citadel in the mid-ground inspired Lord Byron's "Prisoner of Chillon" and the storms upon its water helped set the mood for both The Vampyre and Frankenstein.
This is just one example of how you can use visual art to examine literary Romanticism.
Main elements of Romanticism:
Love of Nature
Focus on Emotion
Fascination with the Sublime
Individualistic
Byronic Heroes
Interest in the Supernatural
Love of Beauty

Paintings in order of their appearance:
"The Nightmare" by Henry Fuseli
"Lord Byron in Albanian Dress" by Phillips Thomas
"Manfred and the Alpine Witch" by John Martin
"Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" by Caspar David Friedrich

Your voice would be so great for audio books or podcasts! thanks for the informative video :)
Thank you so much! I'm glad the video was helpful!
I kind of understand romanticism a bit better now thanks to this video. Appreciated!
Thank you for this! Romanticism has always been one of my favorite art periods just because it’s so emotional and visually stunning, but I never knew that much about it from an art history standpoint. Compared to the Renaissance or Impressionism, not a lot of people on CZcams go in-depth explaining it. Glad I learned a little bit more.
Thank you so much for this super kind feedback!
I love this video, finally someone that was able to include Manfred and Wanderer above a sea of fog in the same context.
Personally I would argue that the wanderer above a sea of fog is a visual representation of the scene in Act II of Manfred when he stands at the top of the Jungfrau mountain contemplating life. Great video.
I feel like Manfred is such an under-read work! Thank you for the kind comment, and I really like your theory about the inspiration for Wanderer.
This was really clear and informative, thank you!
Thank you for the kind feedback! Glad it was helpful.
Great selection of paintings, off the beaten path as it were

3:23 ooooooof yep
Good video, very informative.
Also one suggestion I have is to get a pop filter for your mic.
Glad you liked the video!
You are so right about the filter. I kick myself every time I'm editing my sound for not having one. I just got to wait a little bit more before investing more money into my set up.
@@OxfordCommaEducation Use a sock! I'm a recording musician, it works just as well. Learned it from youtube actually lol.
@@TheShadowPerson. Haha, what an ingenious idea. I'm trying it out next video!
Thank you , I am a painter looking for something I am not quite sure what.
This explains something , now once I add it to something else , I might see the forest if I can get all these trees out of my line of vision.
I hope you find what you're looking for. Thanks for taking a detour here!
Hi, may I know some of your references? I’d like to learn more toooo😊
Hi! I'm not sure exactly what to recommend as I made this video a long time ago, but this website is a great place to start: romantic-circles.org/

Thank you for trying to turn me into an intellectual :D you tried!
Ha! Anytime!
Um does the thumbnail also shows romanticism?
I believe so. This is from the description:
"The opening thumbnail shows Lake Geneva: a beautiful body of water surrounded by the sublime Swiss Alps. But it's also a place with a dark past. The torturous citadel in the mid-ground inspired Lord Byron's "Prisoner of Chillon" and the storms upon its water helped set the mood for both The Vampyre and Frankenstein."
Breaking bad reference 😨
Hi! Im sorry but i dont understand how does supernatural come under Romanticism?
or rather "Why" ?
oh i got it.. it was because its different and they wanted to explore new ideas.. out of the ordinary stuff, great stuff...
is there any other reason?
Great question! I would say the supernatural plays into their exploration of emotion - especially fear. You see it show up in so many major works from the era Frankenstein, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," and Manfred for example.
Hope that helps!
