I LOVED mine in the Early 1970s. I was in the 4th or 5th grade. Mattel always had the best and highest quality toys!

I remember playing with this on the kitchen floor as a kid. Loved it!

For 5 years as a child, this was the ONLY toy I wanted for Christmas but my parents always told me no. I’m old now but dammit I’m still mad as hell.

Oh wow! That brings back some cool memories! I had that helicopter. I would put in the middle of the living room floor, set up styrofoam cups, and then knock them down. Good ol' toys from the good ol' days!

My favorite toy from the '70's. The commercial made it look so easy!

My neighbour’s dad worked at a TV factory. He wired it up so we just plugged it into the electric outlet instead of constantly needing batteries.

My neighbour Johnny had one of these!
I recall 'rescuing' brussel-sprouts from the ocean with it on Christmas day when he was too busy playing with his Big-Trak!
I thank myself for my service! (Cue national anthem)🎄🇬🇧😉
EDIT: Forgot to say thank you for this upload... Just travelled back in time!! Cheers

A dangerous and very fun toy, you had to be careful back in the old days. I wore mine completely out.

They had something like this in the penny arcade at Walt Disney World in the late 1970's. There were little cones with a wire sticking out of the top scattered around the base. You had to touch the wires with the helicopter to make the cones light up. But I can't remember if it was called VertiBird or something else.

If I am not mistaken, I think the kid on the right, the one without the glasses, was in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, playing the son of Richard Dreyfus. Actor's name is Shawn Bishop.

HOURS! DAYS! I spent playing with this toy. Had an iceberg version too one year, Polar Adventure. Had it next to my Sizzlers fat track or AFX, can't remember which. Then here was Smash Up Derby, big brother to the SSP, especially the Laker Special.

They were great but has one flaw.
The spinning drive wire running from the motor in the base to the helicopter rotor had to make a sharp turn where it reached the heli fuselage, which was done by making the wire into a coiled spring where it made the turn to straight up to spin the rotor. That spring would sometimes twist itself up and eventually would break and makes the toy useless. Mine didn't last a year back in 1973. A shame because I loved "flying" the dang thing.
    Today I fly this: czcams.com/video/S-Xb1QCXc4c/video.html

I was 20 years old back then and my soon wife to be had 3 brothers all 10 and younger who got this for a Christmas present and they wouldn't ever let me have a long enough turn to have some fun and become coordinated enough to become an expert which I never forgave them for 😢, then 20 years later after I became a licensed pilot they wanted me to give them some hands on instructional training which I refused for being just out of spite, just kidding ha...ha...😅
