1973 Vertibird Rescue Ship Inspired Pilot Author Helicopter Check Ride. Helicopter Pilot Dream: 1973 Vertibird Rescue Ship!
I am totally convinced this is where my obsession with Helicopters started! On the living room floor on Christmas Day about 1973! My daughter is 8 years old and had never seen my Vertibird. We started talking about it one night and we just had to go get ii out. Online Helicopter Ground School. "We have spent a lot of time interacting with our customers and using their feedback to create a great online training platform. The response from our clients has been awesome thus far", says Kenny Keller developer of the online ground school.· Comprehensive Helicopter Ground Training available over the Internet 24/7· 10 modules of training divided into several different sections

I am pretty sure it was Christmas, back in the early
'70's, when I opened up the Verti-bird box under the Christmas tree. That thing was the coolest and I flew it until it almost would not fly anymore. Growing up, I always had an interest in learning to fly, but I did not think it was something I would ever really do. I also wanted to be a cop; I wanted to be a police officer. I did not go to college and got out of school thinking I was going to go get a job making a bunch of money in a factory. It did not take long to figure out that factory life was not for me. When I started, I could not even believe I was an instructor. I can remember my first couple of lessons thinking, I do not have a clue what to do. I decided to just get started, I just took a little bit of everything I'd learned from all the different people that I'd flown with. I somehow came up with my own way of teaching that worked for me. I had a lot of success as a new instructor. I did really well with getting people through Check-Rides, and I became the ground guy. I do the instructor thing for five years as I build my flight time. During that time, I had the opportunity to do many different things; pipeline patrol, photography, instructing, 135 Charter, a lot of cool stuff. Then, I moved into the EMS field once I had the time, but I have always stayed active as an instructor. However, once I was in the EMS industry, I just missed the training end of things. One major key is the Practical Test Standards, or PTS.
That is what it's going to take to get you through your Check-Ride, knowing the PTS. Over the years, I have been surprised to see how many people never pull out the PTS and really use it. I can harp and harp, but a majority of the time, I cannot get helicopter students to use it and I do not know why. Let's talk about your Check-Ride day, your appointment with the examiner and what I think is the most important page of all, Applicant's Practical Test Checklist for Helicopters. When I first started training, a long time ago, the company sent me out to fly a little bit with the designated pilot examiner that we were using. On the way out to the aircraft I said, "So, as a new instructor, give me some tips on how to prepare people and how to be a good instructor." You have to go through the checklist in the PTS and make sure that you have everything. Do not ask, "Well, do I have to have this? Do I have to have that? Well, why do I have to have this?" If it is in that checklist, make sure it is there and with you, and start preparing a couple of weeks ahead of time. Do not wait until the night before to be trying to round this stuff up. I can tell you it is a major pain.
Helicopter Pilot Dream: 1973 Vertibird Rescue Ship! 1973 Vertibird Rescue Ship Inspired Pilot Author Helicopter Check Ride
This brings me back 48 years. My dad bought me one just like that. Watching you’re daughter lay on her stomach to get a birds eye view really brought me back because that’s how I flew mine.
The only bummer about those was taking the first chunk of styrofoam out of the ship due to a crash or getting my fingers whacked when I got too close to the blades. Those things packed a wallop! Great vid!
Oh man! I got this same one for my birthday as a child! I was the happiest kid on earth!
We 60’s and 70’s kids had the coolest toys!!!
My favorite toy ever. I rescued many men in the high seas back in the day.
This was THE TOY to have! I couldn't get near it, dad and uncles hogged it all day!
Thanks for bringing it onto youtube!
My Dad played with mine so much on Christmas Day that the batteries were shot in less than two days!
My best friend had a non-ship version and it was awesome. Santa brought me this ship version. Other than my Schwinn Apple Crate Stingray bike this was my favorite toy. I was a master at picking things up with it (so long as it was placed perfectly on the radius of the flight path.) Of course, sometimes I'd give the astronaut a ride and "accidentally" bang him into the side of the ship, much to the delight of my toddler sister.
Thanks for rekindling the memory. Those were the best of times for being a kid, imo.
I love video games as much as anyone, but these type of toys were so much more fun growing up. Wish I had a time machine.
It’s awesome seeing our kids playing with Dads old toys and how much youngsters find it interesting many years later .I had the regular one , didn’t even know they had the Ship Version ...this is awesome
I never seen this version.
Dude, I had this ship in the early 70's. A cool toy and memory. Thanks.
As a child this was absolutely my most loved toy. The hours I spent were and high numbers and the battery count must have been high also. Thanks for the Memories, Kurt.
Greatest Toy Ever! I had the rescue with a two story paper building and the car and road block...
Became a A&P aircraft mechanic eventually and learned to fix things that broke - like my favorite toy...
I had this memory come back to me now I’m in my 50’s. Thinking about my Dad, who is an ancestor now. I just told my wife, I retired from the Navy and never recalled this memory the whole time. The toy was lost in a foreclosure after the divorce. Interesting how the mind protects you.
I got this for Christmas in 1976. My favorite toy EVER. Wish I still had it.
Christmas of 1974 I got this very set with the Coast Guard ship. My best friend Jimmy, who lived next door, got the air police set that same Christmas. Hours of fun!
I got this at a second hand store. It didn't have any of the accessories, but it still worked.
The ship would slide on carpet to move the radius a little for pick up.I LOVED this toy.
I had this toy 50 years ago when I was 10yo, so much fun!
What beautiful memories. I was 9 years old when my parents gave me this boat for Christmas. I spent countless hours creating a thousand and one adventures. Thank you dad, thank you mom, for giving me so much joy as a child. I send you a kiss to heaven.
I had one as a kid. Loved it. Stupid girl next door got her hair all tangled in the rotors and that was it for my vertibird.
So great that you can share this great toy with your kid. No computers, just batteries. Great stuff!
I am 60 years old. I had this toy. Cool stuff!
I got this for Christmas it was kool I remember all the grownups wanted to play with it.
Besides Evel Knievel stunt bike , this was my fav as a kid ! Haven’t even thought abiut it in 50yrs ! Thank you wss great seeing this ! Took me right back to 74 ! Great toy considering it was the early 70s !
I had one of these back in the day- SO MUCH FUN 😁😁😁
OMG !!! Thee single greatest toy I had as a kid ! I'd spend hours on that thing !!!! Wish I still had mine !!! Congrats !
Had one! Man, GenX had THE BEST toys!
Very cool to see kids play with “old” toys.
Wow...I was 7 when Dad the Claus got this for me. Coolest thing ever next to the Dinky and Corgi toys. Thanks for posting this.
I love this toy! Wish I'd had one as a kid.
Those things are addictive! I had the Vertibird Night Patrol Set when I was a six year old boy back in 1980. That was the glow-in-the-dark model! I must have played with the thing till I just about wore it out! Thanks for showing, it brings back a lot of fond memories! Today I have my E-flite Blade for helicopter fun! :-)
Had one many years ago. Spent hours of fun on this toy. It actually kept me out of trouble😀
I remember doing somersaults I was so happy when I unwrapped this as a kid. 😂
I had one. Was awesome until the helicopter portion broke....amazingly enough fireworks and a river made the ship portion fun for one last time.
Man, I had this exact ship (toy) growing up. I played with it for hours on end. I'm 49 years old now and what wondrous days those were growing up with toys like this. I kind of feel sorry for the kids of today who just stare at their I-phones all day. Good video. Thanks!
I had one. SO much fun. I remember if you had the helicopter nose down too far the blades would clip the landing deck on approach. I wish i had one now!
That is rad!! Thats the best of the Vertibird series for sure!
This really was a remarkable toy for so many reasons. It really flew (albeit with a power-feeding tether), it lasted for YEARS, and it truly redefined my understanding of pain as a child when that propeller would hit my tiny little finger... Not sure how, but I distinctly recall it hitting me in the face once as well. OUCHHHH!!! Kudos to Mattel also for selling replacement rotors... as I broke more than one or two. This toy stood up to YEARS of play, though and I sure wish I knew what ever became of mine. Great memories.. thanks for posting.
Thanks for commenting Terry!
Best toy I ever had in my whole life I'm 61 now
This is the best one of this series of toys.
We had this! The cat loved it until the helicopter blade hurt her paws...but it was so funny to see her chase the copter around and around 😀
yeah,I was given this as a boy in 1973. fond memories!!
This toy is why I love rc heli’s
It has two controls, one that operates the rpm of the blades, one that controls the direction of the helicopter! You may be able to find one like this on ebay or elswhere. I have had this one since 1973!
I love this toy.
I was 8yrs old in 72.
The year our boys in Nam came home.
LOVED this toy as a child. Styrofoam was probably not the best choice for a material for the ship though.
I wanted the original (non-ship) one for Christmas so badly. The parents got it for me and it was broken straight out of the box. My parents tried to return it but all of the stores were out of it because it was so popular. I never got it replaced. To this day I am still negative on the Vertibird balance sheet and believe me I am still resentful about it. I wanted to pick up that damn dude in the boat so badly.
Got one for Christmas in 1973, I was 7.
WOW, i had that too, great memories. we grew up in a good time with 70's toys. my rescue ship got beat up some how not long after i got it. id have to say that toy and a few others of the 70's got me started with my obsession. Thanks for posting.
I had this when I was a child..I also had the Big Jim rescue rig.
I would love to have mine back. It was having some mechanical problems, but I wish I would have saved it. I have looked for them online, but they are very expensive now. I remember when I got it in 1973. My older brother and my brother in law both started playing with it. My mom finally got it away from them, and I locked myself in my room!!! I had great fun playing with it. In fact for this Christmas, I am getting a RC helicopter. Great memories. Glad you are able to fly the real thing!!
Wow one just sold on ebay for 150.00 with the box and another 2 weeks ago for 275.00 with the box not including shipping. That's incredible.
I had this toy in 1973 too, now I play with a Mavic drone. Same concept different tech.
Wow...ich wusste nicht das es dieses Schiff gibt. Hier in Deutschland wurde auch nur die Mattel libelle 12 verkauft. Eins meiner lieblings Spielzeuge in meiner Kindheit!🤗
Thanks for posting @YouthfulElf they are a load of fun!
I had the same one. I sat here watching with a big smile on my face. I was 6-7 I guess. thanks for taking time to share.
I had one of these when I was a kid. It was a lot of fun. What was really fun was my cat's reaction to it. He didn't know what to make of it,but he was going to kill it anyway. Imagine his surprise when it"bit" back. Talk about inner conflict and mixed feelings.
was just given an mcx2 this xmas by my kids, and i was telling them about this toy that i always wanted as a kid, but never got. still think they are very ool. Would love to find one..
The toy I wanted but never had. Another favorite was a Cox 049 control line Spitfire
That’s so cool I had one when I was a kid play with that thing for hrs
I had one of them too. Awesome!!!
I had the exact same thing. was an amazing Xmas present
My brother had this in was a Great Toy! Love The 70's!
I had the rescue ship set too. I loved it except that I used to end up smacking it into the side of the ship all the time. :)
This was a blast!
Thanks for sharing @TheToymanbb!
I had a few of those back in the day.
I got this for Christmas too
my best ever present . would love one today
My favorite childhood toy . Brings back memory.. my shio was foam
One of the greatest toys of all time, top 5 of the 70s
Real flight physics, the prop really lifted the chopper, not the hub or arm
As usual dad playing with it more than the child lol.
Holy cow, I had one of these! My kids and I have the newer ones now, but they're not quite as cool as the original. :)
So when i was a kid its all I wanted and I got one for xmas. A vertibird paramedic rescue! Well xmas eve i used it a little bit then went to bed. Apparently my brother was playing with it and the next morning I went to play with it and it did not fly or do much of anything. Broken Vertibird.... No more... One of these days I am going to buy one off ebay.
I had one of these, but not this style (which looks awesome). Mine was also not the police version but was a rescue copter to pick up the astronaut from a raft. This and an Armatron from Radio Shack were among my favorite toys. I sold the Armatron for $10 at a yardsale decades ago (pre-internet). Not sure what happened to my Vertibird :(
Tons of fun!
Got this for Christmas in '73 or '74. A college friend of my dad's had been staying with us for several months. He had no job, no money. But then his mother died and he took us all to Sears in the Park Forest Plaza. We went to the toy dept and he asked each of us (three kids) what we wanted for Christmas. This surprised me because I was used to him having no $$, so I presumed that he meant in theory. When he actually got me the Vertibird, I was more than surprised. Loved this toy. Not sure whatever became of it.* (see note below).
One more note. The following summer, I tried to disconnect the helicopter and attach a diecast Batmobile (Corgi Toys) that I had, thinking I could make it fly. Of course I didn't realize that it was the *propeller* on the helicopter that was doing all the work, not the guide rod ;-). Lesson learned (true). I'm now an aerospace engineer (not true).
*^^Maybe that's what became of it ;-).
used to love rescuing the astronaut from the re-entry vehicle and dropping him into the lift raft
Very cool!
I'd forgotten all about these, not sure it's the exact same one i had...i seem to vaguely remember an eye piece looking glass where you could somehow see where you were from another angle...it's all soooo long ago it seems like part of a dream.
the eye piece you are referring to is a different game...it is called chutes away....you looked through an eye piece with crosshairs and dropped little paratroopers on targets....it went round and round like vertibird
They are cool @Conor Redmond, thanks for the comment!
It's a Blast To Fly!!!
Yep, by luck mine is still in good shape after all these years!
They are cool!
That is so cool...
Yes they should!
I forgot to mention that you can download a freeware simulation of the Vertibird for Windows. It has the rescue ship as one of the options.
my older brother got one in '74
That's the one I had!
It is very cool @VideoCre8tor
We will check that out @lurkerrekul!
Absolutely!
That girl is probably a coast guard pilot now.
That is @TheToymanbb!
I think I had that, it has been so long ago. Either I did or one of my close cousins did.
I had the same problem crashing into side!!!
Dad !!!!!! Lol ... let me try
this was my most favourite toy ever. thankyou for bringing back some memories. note to everyone. never put it in a bath
Me to!
Loved it ! They need to bring back more toys like this !
Thank you for commenting bubhub64!
Back in the day daddy wasn't flying it first.
