How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a CZcams channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
3:46 Awwww the cute brown & white is camera shy.🐮😊
Year tags are expensive but make it alot easier when you have a heard to keep records of certain cattle
Experience is the best teacher. Water in the fuel happens to the best of us . Thanks for the great video again.....
The cow that stops and eats right out of the headgate lol
i love tagging calfs its fun and hard
Ryan so funny some when you tag them they go crazy and others look at you and look at you and if she could speak would say do I look pretty now LOL and just walk out of the chute.
One even stopped to have a bite to eat LOL!!
Wayne Rogers With age comes experience, the older ones who have been through it before know it’s nothing to get real excited about!
It's easier when they already have holes in the ear.
Brings back memories taging heifers and calves and giving them rabies vaccine and other shots to keep them healthy .Thanks for the video Ryan hope Jamie is ok Take care be safe. Until next time have a great day
I use blank tags and I practiced writing the numbers the same way a pre-printed tag is. Also I tagged females in the left ear, males in the right ear. That made it easy to count and / or sort. That is funny the cow that stops to eat.
Well handled, to process 3 groups of cattle safe for both cattle and people. Courtesy always pays!
Have a nice evening
Let me set one scenario up for you. It's snowing working cows wind blowing crap around basically miserable. I run the headshoot and my next is a young limousine bull @1 year more or less and I caught him in the headshoot just the same as any other. My other job was too use nose clamps for vaccination so we could pull the head aside. Remember this dude is at least 800 lbs at least. Anyway got him locked in the gate and stood in-front of him too apply the nose clamps and the friggin ice on the bars allowed them too slide fully open and now we are staring at each other for the briefest of moments before i lunged at the shoot bar and closed it again. Thankfully the young bull had stepped back and didn't charge me. Theres one of many memories young farmer for you...I wish you well :)
Another great video Ryan on how Farms work given the cows are shot and your tags I know you're happy that job is done keep up the great work glad to see things are coming along this spring on how Farms work be safe
Hello Ryan, man I miss those days, what fun, I was raised on a dairy farm, and we did a few hundred beef cow's. Keep the videos coming.
OMG this brings back memories been there done that countless times. Thank You
Wonderful video sir!!!!
Love you nohomo
We just worked our calves and have a video of that work if you’re interested
That one cow is still asking "is this not a drive thru"?
Make sure you're draining the air tanks daily as well.
We use blue, green, red, and pink ear tags
The one who eats the hay is like, “I get a treat now, right?” 😆
All those cows are thinking, I’m never going to forgive you for this Ryan.
Love all your videos Ryan. However, one thing finally struck me tonight after watching MANY of your vids... Where are your overalls??? Farmers wear overalls, but I've never seen you sporting a pair. Why? :-)
Beautiful day soon the plant is on. Good luck with dry fields, clean fuel, safe highway miles and safety. On rain days and drying is the plan to ship corn or just get it delivered and done? Your smart to deliver at prime price and everyone is in spring fieldwork mode. I remember those barges at Alma backing up traffic on the river. Coal coming up, grain going south.
good video from NY
My friend he works for a place and he ships a lot of jcb skidsteers!
the tags i use r the RITCHEY Universal Large Cow Blank Ear Tags they let u put ur own numbers or letters on it by using a dremel tool, grinding through the top layer. & they never fade.. i've been pretty happy with them..
so what you are basically saying is that you buy more tags up front than buy a 3rd pack later ;)
Can't believe you didn't have one try to jump the fence Ben there done that LOL
Really nice video Ryan.
We engrave the color off of our ear tags down to the black and then it is permanent.
I love 🐄🐃🐄🐃🐂🐂
Could never figure out why blank tags cost so much, we use Allflex and they're around $1.50 per tag.
The heifers are so much calmer
Holsteins looking good.
Interesting video
Think I saw the Vet mouth "Hurry up with the tags" Aughhh LOL.
You say your handwriting is "terrible", but anyone who has had a shirt or other item signed would say otherwise. *My* handwriting, on the other hand, is downright deplorable from overuse. Man, you had those cattle rocking the chute! Teamwork really gets the job done faster, doesn't it? The JCB is incredibly quiet, by the way. Thanks for the video.
I'd love an update on how your painted tags hold up. I have a small stock pile of numbered tags from numbers I don't use.
the problem i have with tagging is our feed mills, and feed stores all seem to oly have tags numbered 1 though 25,, only, or blank tags you wright on, and my hand writing even i cant read.. so many of mine get the same number but a different color tag
What a sweet process great vid
Tagging cattle is a bit like the dentist, it is not that pleasent but you have to go there once in every while! ^^
Healthy herd Ryan thx for the video keep up the great work
Love ur channel and farming
Great video 👍🏻
How come the tags are different colours? In Ireland they’re always yellow. Lovely cattle by the way! Nice setup.
Did you get any mountain oysters?
What do the metal tags on the ears indicate ?
Great video.
Spraying iodine on the tags prevents infections in the ears.
What is the cost of buying a cute portable on wheels and easygoing move or one set stop compared to renting the vets?
Good video 👍 I like tagging cattle
At least the cows can't bite
A scar on my forearm says otherwise
I could tell the hand written numbers and read them very easy
Good video!
Saw you at buffalo wild wings in dubuque yesturday.
Great video 👍. On a semi truck you don't want to drain the fuel filter, drain the water yes, but not the entire filter. If you do that the truck won't start or run smoothly. I say that because a diesel fuel lift pump can't push air. I was a diesel mechanic for 10 years. I'm not saying that you are wrong about draining the filter, just drain the water, but do it when the engine is running.
Thanks for sharing and God bless
Ryan, as you climbed into the JBC after finishing up I noticed an odor begin to fill my room. I thought WOW, youtube has figured out how to really bring us close by releasing the smells of where Ryan is working......Then I realized my dog farted...….
Drain the fuel filter?? Or drain the fuel/water separator? I’m not sure how many filters are on that engine.
What a difference a couple of days make. What is all of the white stuff on the ground around here?
It's that four-letter S word. LOL
The cows all seemed to have two holes in their ears without a tag? Was that because they had had tags and lost them?
We do the same thing in Missouri
I'm gonna ask a dumb question because I don't work with cattle: what are the metal/silver looking "tags" on the ears of the cows? Looked like a lot of the ones you were tagging had them, some even had 2 by the looks of it
Lilee basically to tell them apart to keep track of what type of cows and how many you have
Usually in my experience it means the cows have had vaccines or similar shots that you only need to give once for the life of the cow.
I started doing that stuff when I was about 10, I am now 13 😂 is was traumatizing for my 10 yo self especially castrating them 😂
How’s many bulls do you guys have hopefully you have more than one because that’s a lot of cows for one bull to service
I can drive in a year yay
Can you tell the difference between the male and female cows depending on what ear the tag goes in
I tag my bulls with red tags and my heifers with pink tags
thank you
No problem man, take it easy.
Nice video Ryan. Good looking beef brood herd. Got a question about your brood herd, how long do you keep your brood cow before you cull them? Thanks for sharing......
Hi Ryan, cool video as usual. I have a question that I'll probably get flack for but is not a "how dare you" but a "how do you" question. I'm an animal lover and you appear to be one also so how do you separate yourself from the cattle you're sending to the slaughterhouse? I always wanted to be a horse/cattle rancher but knew I could never do that lol. Keep up the awesome work bud.
BTW...Love my hat, it's awesome. When are you going to start selling coffee mugs? (Something that won't shatter when I drop it. I have a tendency to drop stuff)
Great video Ryan, really love your videos. One question, how many cows you guys own?
Hey Ryan do you still have the jcb teliskid
In the USA do your cattle have passports? Because here in England we can't just Chuck any number on our cattle all of our eartags have to be registered and on the cattle passport?
What was the name of that vaccine you prefer to give your cows to treat roundworm exc..???
Good to see some cows again on your channel thanks for sharing
Ryan, are you using implants at all on your holsteins? I saw some pretty impressive results at Penn State with implants on dairy steers.
In Norway it's illegal to not have a proper name tag. They got to have the farms ID and also the same number in both ears. If we loose some, we order individual tags and put them in the same place.
I did not know that I appreciate you sharing that bit of information it's either goal not to have ear tags with the Farms information on it that's pretty cool in case the cow gets out
@@ernestdougherty3162 i find this system verry handy at times. Every single cow in Norway is registered, sort of like when a baby human is born. That way we know which cows are ours and also the butchers know who owns the cows (or at least can check it)
How times change? Everything is government regulated. I remember my gg grandparents stories on farms in Michigan - no taxes. And my g grandparents being free of government regulations. Up to my grandparents, when government made the big push. Now you have to have those cows tagged to sell? I saw another case of the Mad Cow disease in a human the other day. Health people didn't know how he got it. Good luck. Eaglegards...
Thanks for making them stakes look good
This may have been asked before but, why do you wear leather boots instead of rubber boots in the manure?
What are the different metal bands on the ears?
I am from India i want farming in your country so what i do for.
.?
Ryan, good job like always but I want to bring a safety hazard to your attention. Your cattle are quite calm which is why you got away with but when tagging cattle the last place you should be is directly in front of the chute. I've seen many people knocked on there rear because they tagged the cow and she lunged forward.
rrmtn farmer good idea there was a farmer killed last week cos the gate broke away crushing him a head scoop is a good addition to any crush for safe handling
@@claetuswoodroofe4164 thanks, my family has a stocker operation and I work in a feedlot and I've done the same as Ryan but I learned from a couple close calls and it's better to tell someone then let them get hurt.
Are you thinking about milking again.?
👍👍👍
I think that the JCB looks great on your farm
Holy cow your cattle are a bit lively aren’t they
You guys don't brand?
This is what is looks like when the military get new recruits and does all their vaccinations lol. MEPS
Do you ever worry about killing the microbiology in soil with using pour on and injectables
Not at all, everything has a deterioration rate. Even when applying anhydrous which kills massive amounts of bacteria, they still bounce back to normal levels in a week.
When you change them run some fuel through a coffee filter and fill the filter before you out the new one on.less trouble priming it
Im thinking about buying a few cattle, what advice would you give to someone who is starting from scratch?
joe scanlon start small, work up from there. Try not to go all in so you’re not hit with any surprises, like not enough feed or bedding
Why dont you get scan tags that has their info on it.
Why did you use a yellow tag on certain cows instead of the same colors like some of your other cows
addng a avocado for every vegan you see in the comments
: 🥑 🥑
Add one! There’s a vegan above ya!
Are u going to put the "how farms work" logo on the side of big red
Hi
Hey Ryan’s what’s your address becuase I have a sign for you guys
All4FarmBros YT the farm address is on Facebook!
I live in New York and work on a dairy farm
It looks like when you are installing the tags, you are centering them deep in the ear, such that the edge of the ear gets caught in the tool and you end up squishing the edge of the ear with the tool rather than puncturing and applying the tag. That's why you see the cattle moan and freak out sometimes.
Dehorned at lot steers. It stinks
