Dudes, the best video about this premix so far. The only way to make the video better would be to have supermodels in the background doing yoga.
🤣🤣
Great video. That orange charge icon on your MixPre is indicating that you aren't getting enough power, which means you need to use either a USB-C to USB-C cable from your power bank with PD or a special 2 USB-A to USB-C cable that Sound Devices sells.
This was so informative, David is a pro! Thanks!!
This was the best MixPre explanation I’ve found. Thank you!
What an awesome video. Thanks.
finally a great tutorial for general use with these mixpre's
Thanks for this video, best video about the PreMix so far. Very helpful, Thank you!
Absolutely fantastic. I'm new to the industry and just bought a mix pre 6. This was really helpful. Thanks guys!
What a great video on the Mix Pre, this was so educational and help me a lot on the understanding of the sound device
Thanks for having me on! Nice edit!
Thank you, David!! 👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼🦾💯
great tutorial for general use with these mixpre's
This was so good!
Thanks!
Great video
Very useful!
thanks for making this video.
You bet!
Intro/outro A-roll lookin' spicy lately!
lol thanks!
Hi, I have a mixpre 6 and running it on a single sony npf-970. I last a full day. I got tired of using the smaller batteries in couple of days. always bring 3 batteries, but never finished the first one on a day.
Also there is a -20 db tone that youre mixpre can send out that helps you match the levels on your komodo.
awsome vid..
thanks!
great vid, i use the mixpre3ii with a "USB C Portable Charger RAVPower 20100mAh Power Bank" a whole day without dying ...hope this helps
I actually can get away with an AUKEY 10000mAh power bank doing interviews all day on a MixPre-6. 10000mAh can even get you by if you're trying to keep it more portable.
Just a note to say the mix pre series was never designed to be used with standard alkaline batteries, best you would get is 30 mins, however if you use NICAD recharchables, you would get over 2 hours. Best solution is to purchase the L-mount Sled and use the Sony NP type for days of recording. Great video btw.
yeah the L mount batteries are the only way you can record for more than 2 hours constantly
Low Cut is a good option, but also know that you can apply a low cut on your entire audio in post, along with compression you will get much more even dialogue. Something smaller and similar specs is the Zoom H6, has limiter, 6 inputs, can record to stereo, basically everything this does and you can mount it or even put it on a sling around your neck or whatever. And it's not that power hungry getting 20 hours or more on batteries.
Great video. Will you be doing an updated video with NoiseAssist and 32bit float with your MixPre 3 II?
Long conversation about setting a level in the camera. Use the tone generator and calibrate using the meters. That’s what it’s there for.
I record my dialogue for film closer to that -12db to -9db range. Less you have to raise the noise floor when you normalize dialogue in post the crisper it'll sound. You can always lower it if it's too loud for the overall mix, obviously. Mic Placement is key though. Gain is meaningless if you're too far away.
That's value
Thanks for sharing
Have you found s way to use that configuration and also use 15mm bars underneath for follow focus and Mattebox ??
Hello! Nice little walk through. Just three additional comments, hopefully it can be useful for you or anyone watching this video.
Make sure the channels you don't use are not only disarmed, but that they are muted/fader 100% down/input is set to off in the channel menu (either one of these 3 option works), else it will add noise to the mix.
Regarding how to set the levels for the camera at: czcams.com/video/FoEoB0VEgOI/video.html Put on the tone generator on the mixpre (less guesswork needed with a stable sound). Lets say you have it at -20 dBfs (which is the default setting and often the standard tone), youll want it to hit the same on the kommodo. Start with adding gain on the mixpre out rather then the kommodo.
I bet the 4 AA batteries were non rechargeable? They don't work that good for the mixpre, I guess you would have 2 hours if you used IKEA Ladda or Eneloop blacks. But yeah, researching power options is definitely needed for anything else than really short work.
Awesome video, thank you both! I have a tough question to David. I have MixPre-3 II and I am running Rode Wireless GO II in from the 3.5m AUX port on the side. With the GO II I have 2 transmitters and I would like to record both transmitters' audio to a separate track or at least separate channels. Somehow can't find how to do this, at the moment both transmitters audio is mixed together as one track. Much appreciated. Thanks again!
It may be something you have to change directly through the Rode RX. or it may not have that option. I know with the Hollyland Lark 150 you can do mono tracks or stereo
great vid! can you show us, how you mounted the mixpre 3 under the komodo? looks quite useful..
The MixPre has a quarter twenty on top
Great video and and very informative! I was going to buy a MixPre, but with that power deal...pass!
Nice video! Just one comment. I think that the 3.5mm input provides high quality sound but it doesn't use the Kashmir preamps of the mixpre only present in the XLR inputs. I wonder how noticeable is the difference in a shotgun mic like Rode VideoMic Pro or Deity D3 Pro...
Trying to understand why you wouldn’t record in 32 bit float? And why wasn’t it mentioned. Might of missed it. Great video!
What is the workflow for videographers capturing audio on the MixPre 6 ii (32bit float). I think most video editing apps don’t support 32bit.
Do you ever wish you had a mix pre 6 ii instead of the 3 ii? The mixpre 3 ii only takes 3 xlr where the mixpre6 ii takes 4 xlr-1/4
I forgot to say good video as always also November 8th I am getting married bro
Congrats!
QQ Justin: are you actually mounting the mix pre on the bottom of the K? I assume not since you would probably have a base plate. So would you use the mix pre as the master time and send it to a tentacle and then use a tentacle on the K? Or what? I’m trying to figure this out. As always thanks for the info. Mike
Yeah, you can do that. Theres a mount on the top & bottom of the mixpre. So if you’re doing a talking head, theres really no reason for a follow focus, so you wouldnt need rails, or you could still mount the mixpre under whatever baseplate you’re using and then attach your QR plate under the mixpre. Theres lots of different ways you can send the audio. I dont have a tentacle sync, but the mixpre can jam timecode on its own thru the 3.5mm jack
@@JustinPhillip thanks much, be safe
Great video, but please tell me, does the MixPre-3 actually plug into the Red Komodo (if so, how?) , or is it a totally separate unit that records while the Komodo does its thing. I would have like to see how the actual physical connection to the camera is done in detail, if that's the way it's done .... regardless ... nice job on this video.
stereo out to the mic in on the camera
@@JustinPhillip when powered from the same V-mount battery, I have a wierd elecric noize in the k - did you experienced this somehow ?
@@kroOnski No, i always power it with V mount.
@@kroOnski i have that same noise too. Did you ever figure out a workaround?
First time being first on a video 😂
Hey bro I had a video Meeting with James and Riley with Red I am thinking about getting A Red Komodo I mentioned your video to them also what do you think I should get Black Magic Pocket Cinema camera 6K oil lol or Red Komodo with Production kit? And your opinion which one would be better for me I will be using it for content creation documentaries short films and possibly a feature film and some client work also if I was doing client work can I charge them for using a camera package let’s say I’m using a red camera do I add that with the cost? And do you have a sample billing invoice?
oh nice! RED all the way, i'm not even a fan of the P6K. I'd get the P4K with a metabones before a P6K, but that's just me
@@JustinPhillip I just added some more Questions if you can’t answer it’s cool essay lol
@@BadKarma714 If you’re not used to shooting on cinema cameras, then the Blackmagic is more ideal for learning on. As far as those other questions, I only discuss things like that over on the DogTimes Patreon 🤟🏼
That was an awesome intro to this world, but I must admit that I’m close to passing out from the tech info overload...
😂
Hi Justin. Just want to say that I find this walk through with David most informative. Really. very very good.
Thank you 🙌🏼
Have u ever had issues with the mixpre 3 ii not having balanced outputs ? The mixpre 10ii has balanced outputs
Not that i’ve noticed
@@JustinPhillip do you synch audio into the Komodo with the mixpre3ii or do you record separate audio ?
JUSTIN EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT THE RED Komodo--------BUT NO ONE IS SHOWING COLOR GRADING RESULTS -YOU KNOW LIKE
Can you do professional voiceover work with the built in preamp?
definitely. just need a really good mic and a good booth
@@JustinPhillip Thanks!
