Have the same issue on my E92 M3 for the past 3 years and no service in my country knew how to fix it😵 Maybe now I will show them this video and I will finally get it fixed.
Mike back at with legend status. This guy has a way of explaining very complex parts and diagnosis so that anyone can understand. That’s a dude that understands educating clients is imperative. Great video dude. (Love that the wing is back 😈🚀)
Thanks for this video. I really thought I would need a new driveshaft to get rid of my noise. Replaced the center support bearing and the noise is gone. Much appreciated thank you Spencer and Precision Dynamics for the help.
Thank you Spencer for these type of videos! No one else is showing in depth videos like this on the E9X M3. Saving this video for when I'm ready to get rid of the cowbell on my M3!
Thank you for the video!!! This fixed the cowbell sound on my 08 E90 M3. I was able to remove the old carrier bearing with a prybar, just had to work around in circles until I got it all the way off. No torch needed! I used the bolt/socket method to press the new one on. I also marked the driveshaft before I split it and marked where it bolted onto the diff. I took it for a test drive and no vibrations. Doing it alone with jack stands was kind of difficult but it was possible. The hardest part was dropping/installing the muffler and mid-pipe.
@@sethpoeski2954 I know it's an old school trick but it's still an improper procedure. It's done cause guys don't have the right equipment. And @mi76ke I'm a level 1 certified BMW Tech 🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫 10 plus years
Great video, I now understand the problem, it's crazy reading comments where dealers can't find the problem when actually it's quite simple when it's broken down and explained in this format, thanks 👍
Ahhhhhhh! Finally, I know what's making the "gong" sound from the back of my M3! Thank you for also having this issue and HUGE THANKS for finding the source. :)
I had the same cowbell noise and fixed it by changing out the CSB just like this. I didn't need to torch the old one off, it came out easily with a rubber mallet. I didn't have nearly as much play in mine, nor were the bearings making any grinding noises. I wasn't sure it was even the problem, but once replaced, the noise is now completely gone. Great video!
ohhhh Finally, I found the solution i have the same problem. I am crazy about this problem for last one year !!! thanks spancer now i can fix my car 🙌 i have e92 330i MT
Dude that shop guy is a BMW guru. He literally is a BMW pimp genius. Does he have a shop in San Antonio? LoL. You have a good friend Spencer. Love the channel by the way. Next year I'll be buying a used 335i and love your channel. Your videos are satisfying. Loud at times but satisfying.
Just took in my car today for some maintenance and a walnut blast. Found Mike to be so informative in your previous videos and have been going for the last few months.
You’re the best !!! All the details you put into all your videos on the E9x M3! Being an E90 m3 owner myself. Am grateful !!!... with love all the way from Singapore!
Another great how to for the diy mechanic however i would suggest in future for these types of videos listing the torque values for each of the components removed, would really add the finishing touches that are not seen on camera assuming they were performed. All the best from across the pond 👍
Spencer, I know you mentioned the transmission tune at the end - I'd also recommend looking into doing an adaptations reset. Has solved a lot of hesitation problems for a lot of people! Peace
Hey bud, You should powder coat the bolts/screws on your spoiler black. I think it’ll help with the look of the car. It may be extremely subtle but, go a long way on appearance. Otherwise love the car and can’t wait for what’s next even if it’s just maintenance items. Would love to see more rollers/ drive by intake plenum sounds.
The guy seems very knowledgeable about bmw but he drives an audi. Anyway, i have some critiques about his methods....1. He didn’t support the transmission when he loosened the bracket. 2. He didn’t mark the alignment of the shaft to put it back together the same way. 3. He used that blow torch and said that its better but a chisel alone could have worked better. 4. He didn’t preload the center support bearing on reinstallation so its going to wear out faster. Also, your engine mounts were under some strain without the transmission be supported when the bracket was removed. Good points, 1. He pronounced giubo as joo bow which is correct. 2. He said the diff input cv joint hardly ever goes bad. 3. He made you also change the flex disc as it was already out. 4. His 36mm socket method to reinstall the bearing was cool.
Hey Spence. Great video. Quick request. We all watch these videos but would be great if there was a pinned comment with all the stuff that was done. I love watching this from end to end but can't really ask my mechanic to do the same. So a short pinned comment with what was replaced, especially since the short link does not work anymore, would make these videos even more useful.
This was another very informative video Spencer, and a reminder of some key things I learned along the way with my other BMWs. Especially, “BMW” stamp parts 🆚 OEM parts that are made for BMW and are less expensive because they aren’t stamped. I’ll definitely be inspecting my drive train when I go catless and install the X-Pipe 👍🏽 Thanks Bro 🙏🏽💯
@Spencer Berke Just got my GST TCU flash from Alpine today and I can confirm that first gear engagement is much smoother and getting into reverse is much faster than before. Also not to mention that shifts are much more crisp.
Hi Spencer just one area you guys didn’t touch on, I thought the shaft is balanced so it’s important that you put the driveshaft back on the exact splines it was taken off of? I’ve seen people mark a both ends before taking them apart. Is this true, did your man say anything about this.
One thing I was paranoid about when I did this a year ago was the re-alignment of the splines when putting back together. Apparently there is no documentation on this anywhere. I don't think it needs to be exact and so far soo good.
@@markcalaway3301 I had ballparked it and it's been fine. if you have apprehension I suggest getting an alignment laser from Home depot and marking it before you take it apart
Yeah I did this today, I didn’t need the torch. Just split the tailshaft and stand the tailshaft up with the bearing end on the ground, hit the bearing a couple times with a prybar and hammer it’ll pop off.
The mechanic is excellent. How about you share his info if he has a public presence. Thank you Mike for showing us shade tree mechanics how to do it without a press. Was gonna do this job last spring but my JC which has a press got shut down for the Covid. Just completed this job with my 19 year-old son doing most of the hard stuff.
Didn't hear anything about it in the video but don't you have to make sure you realign it with the way it was before because the drive shaft is balanced once from factory and if you put them together in a different section it gets unbalanced? correct me if I'm wrong.
I don’t think so from researching the forums. It’s just more play which results to the noise. Getting mine fixed in two weeks. Have had this god awful noise for months.
Mate....this doesn't fix the noise...lol...see all other people fixing it and where is the noise coming from...noise is moving/play/wear between driveshaft and differential ...or othe have it from the cv joint. Bearing you've changed doesn't do the noise... You should have moved/rotate the rear wheel and hear where the noise is coming from.
I wish there was a shop like this in my city 😭😭
Haha, I feel very fortunate with having this shop local. Mike is a great dude.

what an idiot dealership. you can tell just by hearing it that the cause is in the center of the driveshaft.

Facts. And pro tip if they had an air hammer could of took that driveshaft bearing off in 2 seconds. Heating it that's a no no.
@@Yanman233 heating it is fine. It's an oldschool trick when you don't have a press to press in those bearings, or the removal tool needed.

very nice work - how much would this normally cost at an indy shop?
less than 1k
May be a dumb question, why were the O2 sensors hanging down uninstalled?
Probably because with no cats it'd throw a CEL. Just a guess.
Who makes the carrier bearing and flex joint? I couldn’t understand
The brand is called ‘Febi’, it’s part of the Bilstein group.
Love the contact. Look way better with that big wing off.
Ever since I upgrade my clutch I've gotten the same sound on my 2012 335is.
Why in US you call "DKG" gearbox as DCT?
Dual Clutch Transmission
Drive train disc
So your car isn't tune at all yet?
Not yet. Zero.
Are you using a gimbal?
I’m not. Just hand held and post processing in iMovie.
How much does the fix cost?
Around $700 USD with labor from this shop.
Although it’s an annoying noise has anyone had a catastrophic failure because of this?
I don’t think so from researching the forums. It’s just more play which results to the noise. Getting mine fixed in two weeks. Have had this god awful noise for months.
