  • I was cleaning up around the ranch and getting rid of some of the old wood I thought I would never use but then ran across a few pieces that caught my eye so I thought I'd try to put them to use and make some sort of wall art wood sculpture piece out of them.

    Many thanks for that awesome display of fine craftsmanship. I'll be making a similar frame to enclose the rear wheel/fender of a late 1800's Stearns bicycle. Thanks to you I now know how to stabilize the frame material.........

    I love that you look for the beauty, in the wood, and work from that point, greatness
    is hidden under the old dried out, stuff. Not done watching, yet. Keep experimenting, that shows creativity, that can be used later.

    Hey Scott... another cool video (even the 2nd time around) where you are sharing, inspiring, and teaching others to connect to their artistic selves... me included. Although my wood is old cedar fence planks from nearly 50 years ago, it was extremely weather worn, full of worm holes from long dead bugs, complete with knots, knot holes, cracks, broken edges, etc., I had a feeling that throwing it out would be a bad idea, and that I might find some use for it down the road. A few months ago, I suspected that there might be some beautiful wood under that super rustic surface, so I sanded a piece down with a belt sander and 80 grit paper. I knew then, that I had something valuable to work with, art-wise, but it took a long time to get it to that point, and it still needed to be sanded with much finer grits before it would look like I wanted it to. So, it went on the back burner again until last month, when I bought a DeWalt 12.5 inch surface planer. It went through the old wood surface like a knife through butter. Just what I wanted. AND, then I employed a technique I saw you use on your art pieces... a stained backing board... which not only holds all the cracked pieces together, but it makes for a nice wall-friendly surface to mount brackets on. So, thank you for that wonderful idea. I just wanted to share with you, and I put up a link to your channel on my FB page, so my friends who are interested in such things can come by and be exposed to your work, ideas, and your incredible artwork!
    I tried pasting some pics here, but copy and paste not working here. If you care to see them, message me with your email address and I will send you a few pics on the artworks you helped inspire! Take care!

    I think there is something really magical about old weathered wood. I think of all time and weather it took to get that distressed. Just one offer of a tip. Try using a quick dry spray paint of a brown color before mounting your boards and that way the plywood won't show nearly so much. Just thinking. beautiful piece though.

    So fun to watch! I noticed towards the end though, when you finished painting the plywood on the back, that the hole in middle piece looked like a heart shape! Also, that because you round out the back plywood, it looks pretty when you add the paint. What if...you painted the back a bright color or a bold color (maybe contrasting the wood) & make the piece REVERSIBLE?!?! I think it would look awesome! You'd have to figure out how to add a hanging feature, maybe. But the piece could lean up against a wall or on a mantle or shelf without need to hang. But making it reversible, would be like having TWO pieces! Just a thought...

    • @scottoconnor
      @scottoconnor  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks. You have some great ideas. I don't if I'll ever end up making any changes to this piece since it seems to have found a semi-permanent spot on my wall but I may consider making a future piece reversible. Thanks for the feedback and suggestions :)

      @scottoconnor  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks. I appreciate that :) I plan on doing more pieces in the near future without polyurethane. Any type of finish seems to darken up the wood quite a bit. Sometimes its better to leave the wood all natural with no finish at all. But it is fun to experiment with different stains and finishes on occasion.

      Well, that's the beauty of rustic wood work. There are so many things you could do with the same piece of wood and many ideas would work well and look good. Your idea would have probably worked very well with this piece.

  • @BeautifulTouffe
    @BeautifulTouffe Před 6 lety +1

    Hi Scott, as a first comment I think on youtube, I would say 'thank you' for sharing your own commented effort in making this sculpture. Whatever the result, (I'm still wondering how to avoid the visible background wires to hold the center part), I think you were right in publishing this, since I just watched it. Take care. Bye

    • @scottoconnor
      @scottoconnor  Před 6 lety +3

      Well, one way to avoid the wires would be to not have them and hang the center piece separately. As you can imagine this would have its difficulties and drawbacks esp. if the piece was sold and the buyer had to hang the center piece separately and got the spacing wrong. One time I used plexiglass instead of wires to support the center piece. The only problem with this method is that the plexiglass was reflective so it didn't look right. Another thing that could be done is to use very thin wire or possibly very thick monofilament. Once again the big risk would be if the piece was sold and the buyer wasn't careful when handling it and the thin wire or monofilament broke. I think the best solution would be to paint the wire with the same paint as the wall color once the piece was in its permanent home. I wouldn't risk doing that myself since you never know what color wall it will hang on in the future. I move my art around quite a bit and it seems like the walls are always different colors.

    I am an Aussie who also loves to use wood in all forms. My wife always scoffs and laughs at some of the “crap” that I bring home but loves the finished product.
    Sorry for my directness but the people criticising your work can take a long walk off a short pier. You’re creating art and therefore it speaks to you as you’re creating it. They do not do it, nor can most. I agree that your dialogue is a bit long, but I can understand why.
    Honestly I would have gone a different direction to your path but I love your work. I’ve subscribed and liked as you have given me more ideas.
    Keep up the good work as I love it. Thanks from “down under “.

    • @scottoconnor
      @scottoconnor  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks Mark - Cool that you like working with the "crap" wood too. Sometimes the wood other people see as junk is actually some of the best stuff! As far as the criticism of the work, this was my second woodworking video and honestly, I never expected it to get too many views. I didn't have much experience making videos or editing when I made this so I was still finding my groove. Anyway, I really appreciate the positive feedback and thanks for subbin'.

    Hi Scott, I really enjoy the way you work with the so-called imperfections of wood. I'm just getting started with woodworking and am trying to figure out which tools I should invest in first, especially for chiseling, sanding, smoothing, enhancing the distinct personality of any given piece of wood. Could you do a video dedicated to tools?

    • @scottoconnor
      @scottoconnor  Před 4 lety

      I'm working on a few different wood art projects right now so as far as making videos those are my focus. I've thought about making videos about tools in the past - but don't know if I'll ever do it since making videos about art pieces is my main interest. There's a ton of videos dedicated to "best tools to start woodworking" if you search it on youtube. Some of the people that make those types of videos are very good at them and can do much better at them than me. If you watch a few of them, hopefully you'll get some good ideas about what tools to start with :)

    • @scottoconnor
      @scottoconnor  Před 4 lety

      Yes, I hope so. I would encourage other's to do wood art whether they have talent or not - a lot of wood is art in and of itself - so to just cut a beautiful wood slice (and sand it and finish it) and hang it on the wall could be considered art (nature's art) - but to make a frame around it with more wood takes it to the next level. I have plenty of masks that I wear when I sand and grind so I don't really need one but if you want to make one and send it to me sometime that would be good - then I could use it when I'm sanding and grinding :)

    • @scottoconnor
      @scottoconnor  Před 6 lety +1

      Yea, using a router with a 45 degree bit might be a good idea. I usually just bevel back the plywood edges with a flap disc on my grinder. A lot of times when I'm beveling back the edges I have to bevel through plywood with staples in it and the flap disc removes the metal without a problem. I used Zar oil based antique flat polyurethane as a finish.

Its very important that the center piece stays in position and doesn't get knocked out of place. With the wires I know its secure and will stay in position long term. With monofilament I would worry about how it would hold up over the years as the art piece gets moved around. I've considered using it in the past but if a piece breaks then I worry that it wouldn't be repaired correctly by the future owner. Hanging it as two separate pieces would also work but once again if I sell it I don't think the buyer would want to (or necessarily have the patience and skills to) hang the center piece exactly in the middle of the frame. Some buyers might but a lot probably wouldn't take the time to position it exactly where it needs to be. If the center piece is out of position then the art piece won't look as its intended to look.

    This is beautiful! What finish did you use on top of the wood?

      I used Zar interior oil-based antique flat polyurethane.

      Thanks. Actually it's hanging in the same spot as it is at the end of the video. I don't think I'm going to be giving this one away :)

    In all it is a wonderful art form, It is a work of Art no doubt but it just misses greatness one and a half to two inches of air, it has become a one sided picture, and as a picture it needs more space to the frame, if there is wire it should show the wire, it would have completed the touch of technicism to bring out its naturalism.

      hahaha...yeah I guess it happens to all of us. I have carved and worked in wood a little but I mostly work in various clays, make molds and cast them in resin or latex rubber. Right now into horror art but plan on moving onto garden art and would like to learn cement and welding and create kinetic wind sculptures and other types of outdoor statuary. Probably move into that phase in about 18 to 24 months.

    what are you using to initially "sand" the rough boards? Flap discs? if so, what grain? Thanks.

      I initially wire-wheeled the rough boards. I used flap discs on the backer boards - probably 36 or 40 grit (or both) - these are the most common grits I use.
