Center Console Upgrade for an 88-98 GM Truck

  • I needed a Center Console Upgrade for the Suburbalanche, which is really a just 1999 K2500 Suburban. Some time ago, I switched the OBS seats from a 60/40 split bench into true bucket seats, but I could never find a console from a similar year truck, so it was time to look elsewhere for an upgrade. Turns out several year of GM console are a viable candidate, but the true upgrade I wanted was from a 1999-2002 Silverado. Its not a direct bolt in, as you do need to fabricate a bracket, but its really not that bad. I bought the console from eBay, but you can find em at junk yards throughout the country, as they are such a common truck.

The monitor had been replaced at some point with a different model (but same size), CRT type and the overall console was in sad shape. I Managed to find the standard model and swapped it. Never thought of trying the newer version though! Looks great. A little woodworking would have made a nice panel for the front and a good place for a CB radio (remember those?).

I have the 99 00 Yukon/escalade console in my 1998 extended cab I wouldn't go any other way. Iv tried the 07+ console and seats an took them back out after a couple hours of fab. The escalade console bolts straight up. And fits perfectly to the dash. I find that the 99_06 console leans to far forward. And also you don't burn your truck all up by welding in your truck. I’ve owned all those years and the best console was the 88-94 . It had cup holders that pull out for more storage and it was very deep and wide. The sliding tray was extremely useful as that held the everyday stuff, the front pocket was for gloves and hate. Rear was junk and all my tie downs went under the cup holder.

I bought a 1999 Chevy Silverado with a 5.3L and plan on using some of your techniques on it. I have a few quick questions for you and I know you are busy so I will try and be brief. For traction in my extended cab, I want to put a gear upgrade in it to get the obvious benefits but is there a way you could have a way to get traction when pulling out in traffic but be able to switch it to do a burnout at will if you want. Any suggestions for that, not sure what the factory gear is but it will now spin pretty good trying to pill out but it's not low geared. Do you have a e-mail to contact you? I have a old K-5 Blazer that is a 89 or 90 the last year of the full size with removable top. Might donate it to the house because of my age and money to do what I would like to do with it. As for the colour, LMC truck has GM colour matching paints for exactly that.
Also as for the front panel. Go to a stereo shop and get matching fabric. Then cover a homemade insert panel with the fabric. Match the carpet, not the console. Or use a contrasting colour.

On my console I riveted a license plate to the front and bed lined it. It's not to noticeable being the console is dark gray and you never look at it directly in the interior. And the noch is the also not needed for my 07 classics it's a single cab so that floor brace is not thare.

Nice job. I'm just thinking that the nbs console is not much different compared to pre -95 obs console.

Your fabrication is cool. I know it’s a lot of work. But the more material you upload, the faster you’ll get to 100K subscribers.

boostautoparts.com is the website you're referring to, and no they don't make one for his console. BAP wireless charging upgrade is specific to only certain consoles from 03-19.

If I was going to paint the console then I would simply glue or plastic weld in some material on that bottom edge. Then sand and paint.
