Kenneth W. Arnold was perhaps the first great video game music composer. His work with the Ultima series is superb, and unprecedented for its time; the first Ultima with music, III, was released in 1983. Ultima V came out in 1988, and by then the field was much more competitive, but I think Arnold holds his own against the NES and C64 legends.
A lot of ports and MIDI versions are floating around out there, but none of them hold a candle to the aesthetic appeal of these Mockingboard reconstructions, which I am lead to believe most accurately reflect the original audio.
