I remember finding this manga in the library like 25 years ago, and it hooked me with the amazing art and the fact that the stories were told without words. The lack of a HUD or conventional ways to check your status is a really cool way to honor the source material's way of story telling.

As someone who owns some of the manga this is inspired by, this is hilarious. Gon not taking damage is directly from the manga, as he's basically invincible. The idea that he could get peeved enough to destroy the whole world is so in character it's genius.
Also I think the reason the graphics look like that is because the developers are trying to mimic the hyper realistic art of the original manga which is neat.

Ever since hearing Roger Ebert insist that video games can't be art, I've been semi-obsessed with considering ways in which they could are. I feel like the use of music in place of a traditional UI may have been a meaningful exploration of video games as a medium, and therefore contributed to the art form that is the video game. It's a shame this had to sit forgotten for 17 years.

It might be easier to answer separate archaic art concepts and contemporary notions. In the latter case I believe that whatever suits the art market will be viewed as art for their own benefits. Art is an industry like any other, there is no interest in recognizing an already influential industry such as video games, I would say even hollywood movies would slip out of this definition. But in the other hand it is obvioudly subjective, any piece of trash could be validated by an institution and be recognized as art. So, about the discussion "what art is or isn't" is really a construct that means nothing, if a piece of media speaks to you in some way, it obviously has a valuable expressive quality, so it fulfilled it's cycle by successfully communicating something. And if that is art, well, any meaningful experience has the same status.

If you ever "read" the mangas, you'll notice that they are completely devoid of any text aside from sound effects. Gon will meet some kind of animal. He'll try to mimic their behavior, and then slapstick will happen. No explanations needed. They are the simplest of stories.

The way this is presented with minimal UI and text is actually pretty amazing. one of the reasons GON was so appealing as a manga, is that is was told with no words whatsoever. This was a deliberate choice to make sure it's appeal was universal. I think that this game went about creating that feel quite well based on everything presented. Did not know that Gon had any game appearances before Tekken 3 - I mean, it makes sense that he did, as he's a manga character or whatever, and therefore a guest in Tekken 3, I just didn't know he did...

4:05 the game has zero text because the manga has zero text 😊
also I love how all the attacks from Tekken clearly came from this game

I remember we got like 3 of the manga here in Brazil 10 or 15 years ago.
Maybe now with the internet it's time to check out the rest of them. Definitely unique, no dialogues, with great visuals.

It looks like they used mechanics form the EVO Search For Eden game. Also I think the ball game was in Tekken 3 as a mini game.

Yeah, I remember going WTF when Gon was revealed in Tekken 3. To be fair. as a guest character he did offer a fun play style. Equally fun was reviewers trying to explain his inclusion... XD
