I broke my BRAND NEW NIKON Z8! in an OUTRAGEOUS STORM!

- In this video, I took my recently acquired Nikon Z8 on a photography expedition to Scotland. A few weeks back, I ventured into the Scottish landscapes, fully equipped with my brand-new Nikon Z8, hoping to capture stunning images.
The weather forecast was quite extreme, predicting the arrival of a massive storm with Arctic conditions. As anticipated, the weather lived up to its forecast, creating a chaotic atmosphere.
Regrettably, disaster struck on the first night while capturing a captivating timelapse of the night skies. A powerful gust of wind toppled my camera and tripod, rendering the Nikon Z8 non-functional. Although the damage was relatively minor, with only slight harm around the eyepiece and a small crack in the body, the camera's screen and electronic viewfinder refused to power up.
To compound the issue, the only alternative camera I brought was an older vlogging camera paired with a 24-105mm lens. Adapting to the situation, I decided to modify my filming style.
Feel free to watch the video and share your thoughts in the comments. And before you say anything, I know I goofed up - no need to rub it in!

Gary, you’re going above and beyond what I think is expected to create a video. I think I’ve said it before, but I’ll say again that I think you’re one of the best storytellers on CZcams. Your content is genuine and engaging. No wonder Nikon chose you for a partner instead of some of the others. The photos are incredible and the video is most excellent! Cheers from Western North Carolina, USA.
Cheers again Clark. Thank you 👍👍
You get in some unbelievable places and in unbelievable weather sometimes Gary but your videos are always brilliant to watch ,thanks for doing what you do 👍
Gary, first of all you take terrific photographs and I love the videos. I do get concerned though about your lack of head protection in these storms. I do a lot of photography in Scotland and I use a Paramo Enduro Jacket which gives excellent head protection. The hood is big enough to use a hard hat if you wanted, so plenty of room for thermal hats and room under the jacket for warm layers. When the hood is zipped up there is just a hole for the eyes to look out of. I am not associated with Paramo by the way but their gear is some of the best I have used. Just be aware that you can get hyperthermia very quickly in these conditions.
I hate putting hoods up. You will rarely ever see me with my hood up. It's strange I know but I'd rather get wet :)
What a nuts video! Oh my word! Gary what a landscape pro photographer has to go through! fair play to you! great images as usual and a round of applause from me on this Sunday evening
Thanks Andy 👍
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again you do not have any sparks on your tripod. I know you’re the expert but having the rubber feet doesn’t work in high winds, hence this damage to the camera it may not work but it just adds a little safety margin, especially the size of spike you fit. Keep up the good works Garry
A cable could also be attached between the spike legs with a 'ground screw' for additional stability?
Hell's Teeth Gary!!! - that's a fabulous video - you really do earn and deserve the reputation you have on CZcams - no easy short cuts for you that's for sure. I'm full of admiration and respect.
Although I have traveled extensively (seldom to colder climates in the winter) I have lived much of My life in Phoenix, Arizona, USA..... When the temperature drops to 7C. or below I feel cold (Miserable)...... I have been in 0C. and below,, BUT I am not at all comfortable no matter how I am dressed... (ok I am a wimp)..... I have the most respect for people who can handle the Cold-Wet weather!!!!!! ThankYou Gary,, for taking Me on another Amazing Adventure :) :) !!!!!! I have been taking photographs since I was 13yo. at 15yo. I bought a Nikon F and became a Photojournalist at 16yo. I recently purchased a Z8 at 72yo.( I have not owned (what I consider a FlagShip) Camera in the digital era).... I can not remember Ever dropping a camera (knock on wood)..... Sorry to hear about Your Z8 :( :( :( I need to look into some kind of insurance (I would be devastated if I broke mine) ..... I apologize about the long comment.. I have been watching You for a long time and feel as You are a Friend :) :) :)
Hi Gary - bad luck with your Z8, but these are some of the best images I've seen, really fantastic. Please know that the hard work that goes into your videos is very much appreciated!
The drone shots are great, but for me nothing can compete with those amazing stormy skies.
Cheers 👍👍
Wowww what an adventure Gary... you had me having a panic attack over your poor bag laying ' open ' in the snow on the edge of a cliff :p You truly are a storyteller and that is captured so well in your videos. Fantastic images and one hell of a story to tell !!!! Thanks so much for sharing.
I wish I could take images half as good as yours Gary, awesome.
I'm sure you can but thank you 👍👍
Amazing adventure with incredible images in atrocious conditions.............and a fabulous narrative as well. Thank you!
Many thanks!
Gutted for yah! But my goodness forget all the camera troubles, great conditions and incredible shots!! OMG!! Insane conditions! How I wish I was there! Sky after sky storm after storm. Mega pal! What a video!
All I can say is wow!! To lose your camera on day 1 and still go on is amazing! Great shots and like your shots with the sea, snow and rocks better than the drone (not that they weren't good mind you). Bad luck on the camera and getting out in the weather, glad you had someone with you!
Gary, what a fantastic location and conditions. The images are accordingly different, fresh and I even say unique. I would have loved to have been there and experienced those conditions and yes I would try shooting in them…but probably only if I had been in a group or with you on a trip!😀. A great video with the story too. Not sure how you achieved all of that.
Cheers Gareth 👍👍
Brutal conditions Gary but some superb images, those skies were incredible 🌬️🌨️💨🌊👌
truly a fantastic watch and ive not got to the end yet. love the pictures and how you captured the light . A masterclass.
Fair play for addressing everything upfront. Makes the video more enjoyable.
Cheers Paddy 👍👍
Loved some of the last beach shots , great video showing the conditions you have to withstand to get great images.
Thanks Malcolm 👍👍
Wonderful vlog wonderful location and brilliant presenter!
Very kind, cheers 👍👍
Cracking as usual Gary , I loved the drone shots but it was good to see you nailing some fabulous images on your semi retired 5D SR , well done pal.
Wow what crazy conditions.
I was gutted for you breaking the camera.
Absolutely stunning image's and the conditions with the moody sky amazing.
I thought you might have worn a kilt and braved the elements.
Look forward to the next one.
Great video and images. Sango beach is absolutely stunning and that shark fin rock in the middle is my favourite rock to photograph, I've got it in all sorts of conditions but nothing like those.
Thats some dedication. Despite everything, the shots are absolutely amazing. The last shot is just outstanding and the sharpness and clarity. Amazing.
Some sensational pictures on this video Gary, and the conditions were amazing, bit chilly i bet. Drone shots superb as well, sorry to hear about the camera, hope its sorted soon. Hope Mr Beaumont is well, was that Buddy I saw in a few shots ?
Wow Gary super shots, and what an epic trip. I feel for you as you broke the z8. I broke my 14-30 f4 lens in whitby before Christmas, as my tripod and camera blew over . Again a fantastic video.
Fine images Gary. Such a beautiful part of the world. Yes, the final image with that lone tree is beautiful😀👍🏻
Cheers John 👍👍
Hey Gary; I thought this video was one of your best ever; it was certainly entertaining, and I've been watching them for years. Great photos under extremely harsh conditions, so well done you.
Shame about the Z8, but hey-ho.....I expect they'll give you another one (hm hm). See ya. (Kevin, Glencoe May '21)
Really great video and photos ... thanks for sharing !!!
Ciao from Italy ...
What fantastic light in a fabulous location resulting in some very atmospheric images Gary, but shame on you for breaking such a fab NIKON camera.
Brave man in those conditions, some great images though Gary 👍🏼

Great watch. Stunning Shots. Sorry to hear about your cameras
What an amazing video Gary, that was a vicious looking storm, but you caught the mood so well in your images. I am sure Nikon will look after you. 😢
Many thanks! 👍👍
Fantastic weather and images. Thanks for risking all to show us this beautiful place on earth. Just stunning. Hope your Z8 is feeling better soon
What an adventure that was, your face was so bright red in those hail storms. I love extreme weather like that, especially when you are kitted up in the right gear, so breath taking. Great pictures as always and what a location!
Great images Gary. Aye, Durness is special, all the coastline in the far north is photogenic. It,s a long way from Englandshire though!
WOW what a adventure what photograhy what images STUNNING to say the least your time and effort is amazing your images incredible many thanks hope your are home safe pat
Fantastic stuff Gary. Brilliant video as always. You're an absulute lunatic! 😂
Scotland is a photographers paradise.
Hope Nikon sort your camera and maybe get a spare.
Keep up the good work.
👏👏👏
Brutal conditions Gary but you definitely showed the raw power of nature extremely well with the range of images you shared.
Cheers Scotty 👍👍
That’s what you call an epic adventure! And some truly stunning shots, especially around 12.14 with the light on the cliffs. Gold stars for your determination to get the shots. Magnifique!
Hats off to you for braving those conditions to bring us this incredible video. All the shots are amazing, but for me, that first angry sky shot and the drone shots are the best. Cheers from Oz, Merv.
Beautiful images there Gary, drone images are incredible as well. Thanks for sharing your adventure in Scotland.
Cheers 👍👍
Sheer dogged determination!!! But your images are amazing as ever 😊
Wow, what conditions! And gorgeous images - I love winter weather, but I think I'd have been inside by the fire for this one. Hats off to you!
Thank you 👍👍
Gary, incredible video, incredible scenery, stunning photos. I say stunning, words dont do it justice. There was a bit of crazy, but boy id do a bit crazy to get those shots. Brilliant stuff!
Many thanks 👍👍
LOL if you were an employee and not self employed, I would ask for "Danger Pay." Thanks for putting yourself out there in these insane elements. Scotland is amazing !! Cheer's from Vancouver Canada.
Snow on the beach that's amazing !
Great video. Thats is landsscape in the winter.
Thanks xx
Breathtaking Gary - that was an EPIC adventure and the photos were just jaw dropping! Thanks for sharing.
Wow Gary! What an adventure. I haven’t figured out what my favourite is yet, but on yours and a couple before, there is a tree that appears to be growing horizontally out of the side of that peninsula,
Defying gravity that is mind boggling and I can’t stop looking at it and asking myself the question: how?
You had epic conditions and I don’t know how you managed to film and make such great photographs at the same time. There was one image maybe towards the middle that really caught my eye, because of some light on a wave at 10:12 .
I am guessing you were well prepared for the conditions and getting stuck for a few days in terms of food and provisions.
Anyway, a splendid and epic video. Thanks for making it.
Suggestion: in conditions such as Gary encountered.
Try Adjustable Guy Lines & Stakes
( Yeah the ones campers use to keep their tents in situ ) 🙃
Peg your tripod to the ground, just as campers secure their tents ..
I should have tied them to my legs too :)
One of your best Gary. Stunning images. It just shows that one doesn’t need the best, most expensive, kit to produce world class images. 💪👍😊
Another fabulous video, all be it, my bum was clenched!
The photos are eye wateringly beautiful. A very brave man indeed, I salute you.
Landscape photographers are intrepid people aren't they? No one else would go out in that storm. Love the LE shots!
Great shots. They convey a sense of the atmospheric conditions in which you prevailed. Cheers and keep the videos coming for they are both educational and inspiring.
Incredible photos Gary, my fav was the drone shot of just the river and snow the contrast of the black water and the white snow…simple, minimalistic fab😊
What an amazing adventure! As always, your images were spectacular! You never cease to amaze me! Thanks for taking me along!
Great video, made me glad I weren’t there with you! Great photography and well done for embracing those weather elements.
After what you went through I don't know how anyone who watched this didn't give you a thumbs-up! As I was watching this full screen, my wife walked in and asked who is that crazy photographer was. I replied, "That Gary Gough, my hero!"
Wow - Absolutely stunning photographs all of them - well done for the persistence is such conditions 👏 👏 👏
Love them all, well done on all the effort afforded to capturing such stunning moody shots, Gary.
Many thanks Ivie 👍👍
Gary, what an epic video with absolutely stunning images. One of your best and very enjoyable. Thank you!!!
only the bravest will ever capture some of these photos - unfortunately on the Z8 accident but you managed to capture them pastel landscape photos - top man top photographer !!! hope you get the Z8 replaced or fixed :/
You are one hell of a tuff guy to go out there, you deserve a million subscribers and those shots were fantastic well done Gary.
Talkabout dedicated to your craft, many ( if not most ) would not choose to shoot in those conditions ! All credit to you for perseverance. Some epic scenery . 👌
What breathtaking scenery (apparently also “camera-taking”). That was some wild weather. Thank you for the great video!
Lightweight tripods in snowstorms and winds that can blow at 100 miles per hour! tut tut...however you did manage to get some stunning pictures and it don't matter what you took them with! those conditions were the worst I have seen anybody take pictures in, I take my hat off to you Gary well done, and thank you for sharing your adventure with us all....
Definitely not a lightweight tripod 😁 I was surprised that so many came out though.
You are mad!! However, your stoicism was rewarded with some smashing images, even without your main camera. Really well done Gary.
Spectacular images! Ever considered placing some kind of goe locator in your pocket jacket or bag when you go out like that? Might be the only to find you if you off a cliff!
I hav one in my bag plus, my phone works off GPS 👍👍
Great video Gary, awesome location and images, my pick was the image at 9:45, excellent
Thank you for sharing this with us
Excellent video. You have done it so that we don't have to. |I would most definitely go out in those conditions. I love extreme weather. However, living in a country with a more temperate climate, I don't get much opportunity. Watching you out there just doing what you do, though, gave me a taste of what it's like. Good stuff.
No pain No gain.
Best pics are taken when no-one wants to come out.👍👍👍👍👍👍
18:48 wow what a stunning minimalist picture, my favorite! Thanks for sharing Gary :)
amazing shots, we had similar weather in Wales and I was frightened to stand and had to lie down to take a photo. you've captured the beauty of the wild landscapes 👍🌨
you & Matt Granger are both at it this week breaking Nikons.. haha.. hey sh+t happens
Hi Gary,
You got fantastic results!
This is just to tell you that I am facing a similar storm down here in South Brazil! Unbelievable! Yesterday I was on the beach capturing some nice herons, fish in the mouth, with my R5. And now I'm back home in a tremendous storm, with lightenings at every second. We really need to pay attention to our little planet.
Best from South Brazil.
Wishing you'll fix or replace your camera soon.
Julio.
absolutely stunning images in harsh conditions ..class Gary 📸👌
Great video, great pictures. I'm all for you because of the Nikon mishap. Greetings from Hungary!
Cheers 😁 👍👍
Wow wow wow great shots for the conditons thank you
That image at 12.13 was epic. How tremendous. Very brave to venture out in that
A great video you have here Gary. An inspiration for everybody to grab their bag get out there and start creating pictures!
Looks like superb conditions , love the use of microspikes with wellies. That looks like seriously good fun
First time using them too. They only cost me twenty quid. They were superb. Cheers Paul 👍👍
Awesome shots Gary! Sorry about the camera 🙈... Thanks for uploading, what an exciting experience though.. Love it...😀
Great vid, you really showed how sometimes you have to suffer for your art. 😁 Finishing off with your favourite image, made me giggle because just as you showed it and the text came up, 'My Favourite', then the image of your face popped up. Your favourite image?? 😆
Wow that looked cold, how red was your face. Great content and images Gary thanks for bringing this to us. ATB phil pace
Great video. To me photography is about the adventure. Unfortunately the camera had the biggest adventure. Thanks for sharing.
Great video. Gary. Q. Use tent guy lines and peg the bottom of your tripod legs down.
All I can say is "sheer dedication!". What an adventure that must have been (even if you crashed your Nikon). Those images are just amazing and the drone captured the vastness and gave scale with the telegraph poles popping out of the snow. Absolutely amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely fantastic shots and the video.
Many thanks!
Tremendous shots Gary 👏
Scotland likes to snarl a lot but every now and then it bites.
Another great episode Gary ❤
Some great photos considering the weather conditions, you deserve a medal as big as a dustbin lid
Wish there was some snow here 🙄 Mind you I don’t envy you the storm etc; or cloning out every snowflake!!🤣🤣👍📸
Cheers 😁😁
A beautiful place and beautiful images, the drama of the sea, the sharp detail of the rocks and the warmth of the sand and grasses. I bet you were glad to get back to the van although you'd need ear plugs to sleep I imagine.
Now THAT was "blowing a hoolie" !!
OHHH MY WORD... I think this is your best video yet. Any person that would brave that weather and get the results you did in my mind qualifies as a deranged master photographer LOL. Great great job.
Those photos were "El magnifico", the drone photos were superb. That is the price to pay for such quality photos. 👌👌👌👌
Good grief, Gary. Talk about suffering for your art. I'm booked on your next Glencoe Workshop, but I'd better get buying snow boots and much warmer gear. Brilliant shots of the rocks. Well worth the trouble. Real fine art at the end. Brilliant video. Many thanks.
Inspirational stuff as always Gary! Truly awesome images. Thank you so much for posting. I take my hat of to you, as having been out in weather no where near as bleak as that, I know how cold & biting the wind / snow / rain / hail can be & it's very easy to say "Sod this, I'm off!"
