- *NOTE: If you want to run CCU and tally via the HDMI port, you need the BiDirectional 3G Micro Converter, NOT the UpDownCross 3G... sorry for the mix-up.
BiDirectional 3G Micro Converter: amzn.to/3AnhIU8
*I've been asked a lot about compatible lenses that offer electronic zoom - there are currently 4:
LUMIX G X Vario PZ 45-175mm f/4-5.6: amzn.to/3tlzswz
LUMIX G X Vario PZ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6: amzn.to/2X15TUF
Olympus M.Zuiko ED 12-50m f/3.5-5.6 EZ: amzn.to/2VtdP0Q
Olympus M.Zuiko ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ: amzn.to/3BKCPQo
*Please note: I am not endorsing these lenses, as I have not used any of them and cannot vouch for their quality. You must make the decision if getting an optically inferior lens (above) is worth the convenience of using broadcast-style zoom and focus control or not. I always recommend Panasonic LUMIX lenses for churches, specifically the 35-100mm f/2.8 and 12-35mm options, for their great optical quality, but they will require an external focus ring and control if you want the same kind of broadcast operation.

Great video! Thanks for the review!
Thanks Micah!
Great job. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching!
Appreciate your succinct features, benefits and value analysis. Also, realistic perspective on price…”if you’re in this range, this is remarkable value and ecosystem” kind of language. These are pro-grade entry level price that still holds pretty true today. We use two BMPCC 4K’s, but if these were out, would likely have bought them 4 years ago. Would have had a hard time justifying the pro over plus, but pro has better future value.
great video - thanks for making it. I think the people asking about AF are confusing a studio camera with a consumer camera. AF is considered a joke with professionals mainly because of focus breathing but also because the camera will always make poor decisions in regards to 'what' to focus on. BM sells a remote focus as an accessory. Even cameras that have eye detection struggle when the talent turns away and will often shift focus to the back of the room or worse just hunt for focus all over the place. These cameras are designed to work with devices like the ATEM Extreme, allowing you can control the focus of each camera via that deck - so ONE person can focus each camera and switch cameras - that one person can also match WB and other settings across all of the cameras.
Thanks for this review! This is a really compelling product offering from Blackmagic.
Thank You!
Hey love this. Have a question can any of these camera have a separate control like the PTZ camera with zoom pan and tilt. Would like to have one where I can control from the balcony when I don’t have help.
So would you need to buy the updown converter as well with these if you get the bigger $895 interface breakdown ? or is that only if you run all HDMI and Sdi. ( $895 stack is for network cat 6)
Thanks man love what your doing
We already have a PTZ covering the altar in my church and 2 Sony XDcamcorders covering just the ground floor of the congregation and we have two other floors we currently are unable to film and I was looking for a reliable option to add to our setup for the other two floors, can the 4k pros serve this purpose and do they output 1080i50? Cause that's what all the cameras in out setup are currently set to.
thanks for the review I have looked at the online manuals and can't find any mention of talk back (intercom) on the plus, only on the pro, although you do say tally, talk back and ccu is possible over hdmi ? also which switcher would be best for this we are looking at the ATEM Television Studio Pro HD
I misspoke there. Talkback can only be carried via SDI. For the Plus I’d recommend the ATEM Mini Extreme or Pro
i am pretty sure you cannot run talkback on the plus version. correct me if i am wrong. there is not 5 pin xlr on the plus model
Would this lens work with the BMD focus and zoom controls? I know I would need an adapter to make the ef mount work. Canon CN-E 70-200mm T4.4 Compact-Servo Cine Zoom Lens, EF Mount
Great job the only thing you forgot talk about are the lenses to use on that camera wet good lens will work on that camera for long-distance zooms that can be controlled by the camera
I've gotten this question a lot, so I posted the 4 lenses with electronic zoom control in the description. If you don't want to use the zoom control handle, any MFT lens will work
@@ProfitandPixelsthe only problem with these cameras are the mft lens. Make sure you do your homework.
So I am creating a video podcast and I was going to purchase 3 BMPCC 4K cameras but recently I found out about the studio plus and pro models, (thank you for the great video by the way!) Could you help me make up my mind? Should I stay with the cheaper 4k model or should I make up my mind between the studio 4k plus or pro, while keeping in mind all I'm doing is a simple video podcast. always tripod mounted, never run and gun.
Now the next question regarding the Studio Plus and Pro, Is it worth upgrading to the studio pro to get the built-in XLR inputs? I believe I was planning on using a Zoom H6 to capture audio from the table mounted microphones. I'm honestly not sure the difference here or which option is better when capturing audio. sending audio to the zoom h6 or directly to the individual camera.
Update: After reading the comments I see people are complaining about the autofocus on these cameras so now I'm even more confused as which ones would be better for a video podcast 😵💫 also I'm not sure how important shooting in pro res would be?
For all intents and purposes I am a noob jumping into an ocean of things I don't understand... I'm just trying to create some fire content eventually.
any help would be greatly appreciated!,
Thank you!
HELLO can i use a lut with this camera while its in a live streaming set up,if so where do i get luts ,how do i install them
The primary issue I have with these for live is that lack of auto focus still. I have the pocket 4k but I use Sony cameras at work because of autofocus.
I was really hoping they would introduce they would have introduced autofocus with these.
Other than that. These look like a great cameras.
but they do have autofocus no?
@@andrius3867 no they do not. It has push button to focus,. That is not dynamic automatic focusing.
@@Techlore1 aaa, ok
those focus assits we have found become a bit of a crutch for our operators. I Agree the focus is a bit lacking but as he mention the zoom and focus demand addons really help level up the gear to that professional level and allow people to gain good industry standard skills pulling focus or zoom. It doubles as something easy to integrate volunteers who are wanting to learn ops can shadow and try their hand on the camera while the season op can do zoom and focus.
Do you know if the Panasonic 45-175mm lens works with there teleconverters?
What you said about the UpDownCross converter is completely wrong. If you want to use Tally and CCU you have to buy the 3G BiDirectional which is the only adapter which will work for this. Also Intercom and return video is not available (HDMI is not bidirectional for video)
You’re right on the converter- it would work for standard conversion like I said, but not tally and CCU it appears. If BMD made less than 100 different converters maybe I could actually keep it straight! HDMI alone does return CCU and tally, but not in a full program return signal
Can i use any other POE switch? to connect to PC
thanks for this amazing review. I would like to know if this camera has a battery.
It does not, it needs a constant supply of power. You can attach a battery externally with the right cables and power level, but they don’t specify which type of battery you need. Minimum 26W
The camera takes 12-24V so you can plug in a v-mount battery with the appropriate mounting plate which you'd have to attach to your tripod or one of the 1/4 mounting points on the camera.
One thing im struggling to find an answer for, whats the go with the colour correction? The website says its in built. Are you able to set it up and go or do you need to remotely colour it from the computer base it connects too?
The capability is built in, but you need a proper connection to an ATEM switcher running ATEM Control software to use color correction. Connection type depends on which switcher model you’re using
It's very easy. First set the kelvin (3200 for conventional stage light) then under the recording tab you'll see "dynamic range" choose "extended video". And you'll have a very nice looking stream and recording.
Hello, I would like to know which one would you recommend if this blackmagic studio camera 4k or panasonic x1500 for broadcasts at events mounted on a tripod
I can’t say I’ve worked with the X1500 unfortunately. I generally don’t like camcorders vs MFT or larger cameras due to picture quality issues
Do i get it right that for home use pocket 4k is still better as it has the same sensor but is waaaay more portable?
Essentially. If you need something you can run handheld or on a gimbal, Pocket 4K is better
What lenses do you use on these? And how do you focus & zoom with the gear?
Panasonic micro 4/3 lenses are best, but anything that fits a MFT mount will work. It appears from the website that you just need to connect the zoom and/or focus controls to the body via USB-C
@@ProfitandPixels Only 2 MFT lenses with power zoom currently available, both with auto focus only.
Studio cameras need a parfocal lens with power zoom. This would be a great camera if you had right lens.
Not sure why parfocal is necessary, though it’s certainly better. Good to know though about the power zoom, I haven’t rigged an internal zoom control before. I still think this camera is great even without the handy controls though
I've done some digging and updated the description with info on lenses with electronic zoom control
So if I simply purchased the 4k plus studio camera with just the HDMI, I could run a HDMI cable from the camera to an ATEM Mini Pro and that would convert it so the ATEM Mini Pro would take care of that and I don't need that other Ethernet Converter box you mentioned for the more expensive 4k pro studio camera?
Or until I purchase the 4k studio camera, having a Canon Ax10 HD that still works very good, which has a HDMI output, can I HDMI it to the ATEM Mini Pro to be converted and encoded?
Yes to both, though you won’t have color control or tally on the Canon
Solid review. If only they had it with an EF mount instead of MFT...
I’m sure they will eventually, and it will be 2x the price. For now you can use a Metabones adapter
@@ProfitandPixels Good point. But will be killer for sure. Metabones adapter/speedbooster is a good idea.
Keep up the good work!
Is the ethernet compatible with NDI?
Since the cameras have HDMI, do you think I could use these with a SlingStudio?
Sure, but don’t count on any CCU features if you go that route
You can get a birddog ndi converter for far less. All poe is not created equal. Make sure your switcher or whatever can support the power required for the camera. I think you need POE++
You could, but BirdDog doesn’t work with other brands. So you need to buy all their hardware, which ends up costing quite a bit
@@ProfitandPixels ???? I have 2 birddog flex 4k in ndi converters. One on a canon xa20 and one on a gopro and they work great with obs
I’m talking about broadcast systems that use switchers and SDI. If you use anything besides a computer, you have to run BirdDog NDI hardware, which isn’t cross-compatible with other brands
If they had continuous AF that would make me want these for a church environment. This is THE dealbreaker for me. I don't expect everyone using this camera to be a seasoned cam op so its a necessary feature.
It doesn't even have to be EYE AF but even my FS100 that I bought used 7 years ago has decent autofocus. All of the other brands have shown that this is what users want now. Reliable AF is a thing.
I just don’t think it’s that important tbh. Few pastors walk forward/back enough to leave the focus plane, and you can stop down to 3.5 or 4 without it getting too dark. I run the PCC unmanned all the time with minimal focus issues
So if I buy the plus camera. And I need to run more than 30 ft of hdmi. And I have to convert to sdi. Then how do I plug into a atem board?
You convert back to HDMI. Or, many ATEM switchers accept SDI
Hey brother. Does this camera have autofocus? If not, what other good camera do you recommend me for $2,000? I definitely need it cuz my volunteers don’t know much about setting manual focus. If
First, I don’t think autofocus is all that important, unless you are super tight on your shots. Second, the Sony a6400/6600 have great tracking AF in that price range
@@ProfitandPixels thanks Brother. The problem is that my volunteers don’t know much about cameras, so, having them fix the focus manually constantly would be a hassle
Sure. In my experience, running at f/3.5 or higher means you only need to adjust focus a couple times per service during transitions. If you’re so tight that you’re blurring the background out then I would agree with you on needing tracking AF
I am asking about the MFT lenses, what are power zoom lenses that can we use in a church setting. I am from Egypt, would like to purchase five of these cameras for our church. I have to order these cameras from the USA - so I am studying this new cameras carefully as it's not easy to order and then find something not compatible for the church setting
The Panasonic/LUMIX lineup of MFT lenses are the highest quality options. You will need the Zoom Demand accessory and if you want to control zoom without touching the lens by hand. The 35-100mm and 12-35mm sizes are great for church settings
@@ProfitandPixels Thank you so much dear Brother. God Bless you richly
Please check the video description, as there are only 4 lenses that support electronic zoom without any accessories and I've added them in there. If you don't need/want that feature, then my previous reply would be where to start.
How are you Sir
Please help i want to built my home studio and streaming live which camera do you recommend between design studio 4k plus and cinema pocket
You can’t record in ProRes with the 4K Plus, but otherwise they are the same sensor and image quality. Just depends on whether you will always be on tripods or if you will want some handheld shots too
@@ProfitandPixels thank you so much Sir please be patient with me
What Lenes do i buy for 4k plus
Can i make it without Lenes ? Or i must have it since im going to use in the room not outside Thank you
@@evangelical..movement you definitely need lenses. Micro-Four-Thirds are the right size. Check out the Church Video Gear Guide for more specific recommendations
Hi, I do have a question I can't seem to get an answer anywhere, and maybe I am overthinking it. Our church uses the Roland V-8HD Video Switcher with 4 Canon XA-40s. We want to turn away from using camcorders. Will these Blackmagic cameras work with our switcher? I personally have 0 experience with Blackmagic products, but I have heard people say they only work well in their own ecosystem of devices. I dont want to purchase these cameras and then having them not work because Blackmagic isn't compatible with Roland or some issue of the sort.
Those cameras will work fine. Anything that outputs HD video will be compatible.
How talk back via HDMI and atem mini extreme work?
You can do CCU over HDMI but you need an SDI switcher with a talkback unit for talkback. Better to buy a separate headset unit instead
Is the auto focus on faces any good?
It won’t track faces, but I don’t think that matters all that much tbh
How is rolling shutter?
Haven’t ever had a problem with it
We invested 25k in studio pro cams and will never purchase Blackmagic products ever. We purchased primarily for the tally light as well as unisence oporation. But no tally lights seems to require tow cables instead of one, and no auto mode functioning together.
25k?? Did you buy 12 cameras?
No good zoom lens fort mft though
Is this camera has autofocus?
Yes, but not tracking AF. You can set it but it won’t change automatically
Nice Camera but all compatible lenses suck, How about BMD get someone to build a decent premium quality servo zoom lens with decent f stops & zoom range.
So far streaming does not work and POE does not work on my 4k pro g2 model. I called BMD and they did not even know this camera can Stream.
It is a sad thing that TV broadcasting in the USA is so lame. They are 8 bit - 720p in the 21st century. When I visit BMD's website I am surprised by the technology on offer. It is strange that an Australian Company is so far ahead of the rest of the world.
Nobody makes cameras in the US. This isn’t new. Not sure what you’re trying to say
Still not impressed. Why didn't blackmagic studio camera 4k plus/pro go all out? High and low angle of view practicality is very bad in practical use if the viewfinder image cannot be viewed. Why doesn't blackmagic design allow the viewfinder to tilt up and down? It's going to have the versatility and beautiful angles that a studio should be. For a little while, you'll be dominating the market in this industry but you don't make it happen. Hopefully this comment the design engineers of blackmagic design will see and make it.
