Still one of my favourites of your videos. Mainly because of the suspense of seeing that pressure gauge going off the scale and the carnage that followed.
D.J. Hyperoptix I did the same, replaying several times, and then attempted to quote Photonicinduction's comments here. Some of the best comedy is unscripted!
LakeNipissing If the coconut is about 4 inches diameter, there would have been about 11,000 LBS of force on the shell from the inside at 220 PSI, which is when the explosion occurred.
+eric hoagland Yeah in this the pulp/meat or "copra" acts as a non permiable barrier like the aluminium liner in those tanks and the fibrious outer layer is similar to the wound reinforcing filament (kevlar cf or gf). Probably if you dipped or pressure cured these coconuts in epoxy or polyester resin they would withstand double the pressure for a short while. Mind you this is superheated steam and that stuff eats organic material quite readily. If these were done with HPA or HPN the pressure could be lot higher and they might withstand it for a longer time....Robinson Crusoe had no excuse for not building an air gun. :)
My first thought was; That cat's seen/heard some shit... Then I thought of the neighbours always hearing explosions from next door then having no power
Epic! The anticipation of "will it get to 50 PSI??" then it sails past "something over 170 PSI"!! Just shows how VERY strong Nature's fibre reinforced composites are! :-)
I like how the red zone exactly marks the point where the pressure does indeed get critical, with the bubbles and all, and how the thing getting PAST the red zone marks the point where the whole building/cocunut would pretty much blow up. No higher measure is needed.
SANDSCORCHER All vacuum cleaner's are known as a 'hoover' in the UK, it's the case of a company being first in the market. "do the hoovering", "hoover the hall carpet" etc. Similar to how photocopiers in the US are known as xerox machines even when not made by Xerox. Xerox just entered the market first ;)
This is still one of my favourite ever CZcams videos between the coconuts popping, faccking ell, the bits of cup everywhere, the cat that has seen some sh*t, the side eye from Henry the Hoover, telling us how to recreate it ourselves (research and development ;) ) and the fact the neighbours must be like "Clive he's exploding coconuts again". Outstanding from start to finish! Bravo!

Photo, 65 yr old guy here in SE Michigan, I so love your videos. I wish we were closer as a lot of people always thought I was nuts for some of the things I did over the years with electricity, it would have fun to have a similar minded friend. George
And yet, when the last LCD rolls of an assembly line in Malaysia or somewhere, the best LCD will still not have beaten the best CRT on a wide variety of important points. A CRT combines very low persistence, near perfect black levels and a wide gamut; OLED may beat it one day, but LCD sure as hell can't touch it. In large sizes they are also surprisingly efficient. (in smaller sizes a lot of energy is lost in the heating of the electron gun etc.)
soylentgreenb Would you say birds are dinosaurs? No, but descendants of them. Would you say LCDs are CRTs? No, but they are successors of them. And btw there are no dinosaurs living now.
Destroying a CRT TV by putting a coconut inside and blowing it up. As someone who has destroyed quite a few CRT TVs myself with various tools, I must say I am impressed.
yeah, the juice inside acts as an electrolyte, allowing current to flow between the electrodes. As the liquid heats up from the current it turns to steam, which is what makes it blow. A bigger coconut would have a bigger shell, which could contain more pressure before finally failing in a sudden release of energy (explosion). The part that I find most interesting is that your experiment showed that you didn't want to go above 5 amps. I would have guessed the higher the current, the more heat, and the more quickly the steam builds up, and a quicker explosion. Interesting.
I came across your site only a few days ago and I think it is one (if not) the best. I have not laughed as hard as this coconut one. Well done fellas. Keep em coming. I have a lot of catching up to do on your channel!
Our whole family have enjoyed your "research and development" videos so much that we now sit around the large screen computer and watch the latest developments in your laboratory. I really love those high voltage transformer you acquired. We have nothing like that here unless we spend many thousands of dollars a piece! Where can we get one? We have been using many neon sign transformers in parallel.Thank you so much! We love you! You are the greatest! Keep it up!
This is absolutely amazing Andy, great to see the original video. and Part 2, explosion 3 was amazing, venting like a pressure cooker under stress, but coconut in the TV. absolute climax. it crossed my mind ( Where is my hammer ! ) not required I will need to source some South Pacific coconuts and try this. better than batteries anytime.
Im still constantly wondering about the old momma down below, and her mindset in these videos' listening to her house rattling, blowing sparking. England in a nutshell, love it.

first. this was an awesome and exciting video as always. Second. I noticed your camera is a really odd one in that it scans vertically, not horizontally to take a frame in a video. I can tell when the power flickers on that last explosion, the top of one of the frames is still in light while the bottom is in darkness.
Never thought I'd ever see a coconut with a pressure gauge on it.
Imagine getting that through airport security
It's specific species of the coconut only able to grow under high voltage environment

who knew coconuts are rated to 170psi
Their construction sort of reminds me of composite pressure vessels.

+volvo245 good to know it's going in my prepping back pack.
I dunno. With as far off the scale as it went, I'd say coconuts are rated closer to 230 - 280 psi.
My first thought was; That cat's seen/heard some shit... Then I thought of the neighbours always hearing explosions from next door then having no power
Alan Douglas The cat may be (close to) deaf and blind now, from witnessing many arcs and explosions, so reaction responses may be minor.
