Action video games might train your kids physically, but they won't go nearly as far as exploration/platforming games.
Spyro, Crash, Prince of Persia, Bioshock, Resident Evil, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls all fit into this category.
Games that make you observe your environment, react to conflicts, and even problem solve how to platform for ledges to higher points.
Better yet; each game will always make you think twice, even though you've played several before it.
Resident Evil has detail based problem solving: Remember where certain locked doors were, and return to them once you have the corresponding key items.
Go from that to Spyro where you see a collectible sitting on a ledge, and you ask yourself "How do I reach that?" There's no key here, but it's problem solving all the same.
Teach your kids to invent solutions to problems, not excuses. I believe games are a good way to approach that.
Yeah and Minecraft survival has related ‘survival tips’
It’s not like you can start whacking a tree and expect to get wood, but the principle is the same
You can also include retro games like Sega Genesis or NES shooters, these requires a lot from your brain as well
Also The Division 1 and 2 !
Soulsborne games/Monster Hunter or any thing that really focuses on fighting difficult monsters and bosses makes you think of various ways to approach a problem and solve it too. (Dodging, counter-attacks, recognizing move set patterns and stuff.)
As someone who plays online coop shooters with custom maps I can confirm that people will whiz right by pressable buttons that are needed to advance through a level. I definitely received the benefit of platformers and collectathons as a toddler.
Don't worry guys, as every year goes by stuff like this will become more and more common and accepted info. That's because for every old fart that dies today another person is born into a world where Video Games are the norm. Soon the gamer population will far outnumber the non-gamer population and Video Games will become an accepted form of art.
Crackers and Cheese games already are a form of art. I mean, in the end, someone had to make concept arts, models, program it all out and make it work. They are _interactive art_.
Besides, videogames are protected by the first ammendment so yeah.
Digital Shrapnel Well obviously, but my point is that as it stands the majority of the population does not agree with you.
my mind.....blown.....
Unfortunately, there are actually many more people who can't afford the luxury of playing games, or considers them interesting even from a young age. And they pass down their views to their children regardless of media or influences.
If a family is religious, or extremely spiritual, of course they will be strict on their kids to the point of warping their views.
@Snarelax Z
Schools are best seen as a 'business' case, they only care where the money is.
This is more defined in post-secondary education.
Last summer, I took my friend’s son to our local shooting range. He is a high level COD player, so I thought he’d enjoy shooting a real gun. I handed him my .45 to see how he’d perform. To my astonishment, he hated it. He was actually terrified. He shot one mag then quit lol.

I wish I can show this to my dad lmao, he thinks video games are a distraction to school work, that it is for boys and it rots my brain, but I've been playing a sneakily behind his back on my pc. Fun fact: When companies were first getting ready to market videogames, the target demographic were actually girls. The idea behind it was "Boys play outside, Girls play inside".
Of course, this line of thinking is wrong, anyone can enjoy videogames, but hey, just something to know when somone tells you that its just "for boys".

JSPumpkinKing well, they are also not quite wrong in a part...
Video games are bad not because it makes you stupid or something...
It's bad because it wastes time, and if you could've done something productive with that time, do it.
Basically, you can't make a living by playing video games, but then again, from my personal experience, most of what people study at school are never neede in actual life, so... studying is no better.
A little tip for someone in the internet that I don't even know,
For as far as i know, there are 3 ways to continuing life...
1. (The one that can make you the happiest person or the person that lives on the street) try to earn money by playing those games... you can do youtube or make a website or something, but there is a catch, if you fail, you can't do anything... even facing your own family.
2. (The one that works if you can do it, also the most boring) manage your time, play games only like 2 hours max a day or even less, also don't stop at games, manage everything in your life.
3. (The one I did and is lucky enough to succeed) just go on as your life goes on...
Maybe you'll find a hpbby and stopped gaming, maybe you learn to play saxophone and got a living from it like I did and still play games, anything could happen...
Jam Ham Time wish theres more ppl with your mindset IRL m8.

2:42 - the best words I've heard on a TED talk
My dad was in an accident when teaching woodworking a few years ago. It blinded him in one eye, destroyed his coordination, made it impossible for him to focus on multiple things at once, he now misses the small details all the time (he used to never miss them), and he sometimes gets really depressed, because even with all the therapy he's had there's a good chance he will never be able to get back to teaching. The one thing his doctors told him would help a lot though? *V I D E O G A M E S*, action shooters in particular. People are starting to realize the positive effects that video games have one the mind. Unfortunately, my dad is anti-gaming and hates the fact that I play games a lot, and refuses to even entertain the mere idea of following his doctor's advice and pick up a video game. Honestly, he's also always stressing about not spending enough time with me, but I would love to play a good few matches of overwatch quickplay with him a couple times every week.

Make sure he plays Winston for the first few games.

Hey why don't you tell him you'd love to spend quality time following doctors orders with him? :)
Protips: Do it while you're sitting and hes standing keeping head down while maintaining eye contact shoulders slumped and with as high pitched and quiet a voice as possible without being weird, it'll make you seem more childlike and vulnerable and work on his Dad-Instincts. Good Luck.
I hope your Dad realises it as soon as possible. Time doesn't wait for anyone!
Well first find your fathers preference of things irl, you said he taught woodworking? Well try starting him out on a building type game like Minecraft, Tetris, World of Goo, or some other simple game like that (some apps on the store can be great, and free)
I do understand he might not be up to building games after the accident but they are simple, slow paced, and something he would be familiar with to first introduce him to video games, then maybe move on to something like Super Hot to introduce him to shooting and using the keyboard controls at certain timings and a slow paced learning environment to warm up to it and improve, then maybe go through tf2 first since hero abilities are a little most complicated, but then if he's liking it move on to some Overwatch (Might wanna start off vs AI for practice, and also our community is really toxic to new players)

Just like you can't trust "experts" that say bad things about what you like, you also can't trust "experts" that say good things about what you like just because it's what you want to hear. As a gamer myself I'd say they aren't a good thing unless you totally have your life together first. If you're a high school kid or lower that's fine, but if you are 19+ you should be playing them casually until you're settled into a job and have a serious girlfriend. Take this advice from someone who really fucked that all up.

She actually told all the best things for being a gamer and I actually felt really happy when I heard it and I also done all the tasks, didn't fail on anyone of it.
Multiplayer online gaming was a life saver during Covid. My friends and I stayed connected and made life more bearable. We are still playing.
She is the biggest non-Boomer ive ever seen
And i love it
The biggest non-boomer boomer
boomerception
Boomer is more of a mindset now than actual age group. You have people like her, age wise a boomer, who has the thought process like us, while also people who are millennial or younger, that think like 70 yr old boomers.
Oryx The Taken King I’m pretty sure no boomers are 80

I think its much more do able if you are a gamer but its still hard. And thats the thing. Because to most its absolutely impossible

the point is: you must relax to perceive more, so basically, if you try you will fail, dont try, just relax. A simple way is to consider it not important :)

I have to say one thing that for teens 1 hour or less should be the maximum amount and that you should not play video games everyday. I find that playing a lot of video games definitely lead to brain fog and as a person who has experienced addiction for video games and also currently suffering with brain fog I have to say that leaving video games has definitely had a positive affect on my cognitive skills and reduced brain fog as well
Me: mom I can't go to the store
Mom: is because you wanna play that damn game

That's true, you're basically too lazy to stand up at that point, you need therapy.

"If the Brain were so simple we could understand it, we would be so simple we couldn't!"
Credited to Lyall Watson
Describes a strange paradox where it becomes impossible to fully understand our Brain. Just think of it as a Carrot being strapped to the head of a donkey just outside his reach, no matter how fast and far he runs, the Carrot will always be traveling the same distance at the same speed without getting any closer.
The smarter we get, the more complex our Brains become, which means we need to get smarter, which in turn means our Brains need to get more complex....... ad infinitum.
Maybe you would think there is a "shortcut", that maybe we can use some "tricks" to circumvent this. However, this is also impossible because even if we manage to somehow reach the point of "full understanding" through some strange tricks, the moment our Brains receive the new Information, they will evolve to more complexity which will require the process to begin anew.

The experience of playing the game, somehow.. changed completely after beginning a crafting discipline of using the gameplay within content about creativity and awareness - about meditation, the celebration of the fact that we are in the mind. I think the action game is doing that in an interesting and impactful way. For example Doom (1992). Action games of the modern day can be the opposite, destroying the celebratory aspect (PUBG, a game that exhibits how you can actually develop a negative habit, an addiction pattern). I think the key ingredient in it is repetition and canvassing physical space to gain familiarity. It has to do with the motion and the geographical element. You can see Alan Watts in the 70s using narration to do exactly what a game is doing, it is a vehicle that carries you through environments, which is cognitively rich/ nutritious. We are wired for story. Repetition is the basic unit of cognition.

I honestly thought this would be another "Video games are bad, make them illegal" type video, but this is honestly a well thought out video, and pretty Insightful.
Luke12C "Well thought and insightful" TED Talks in a nutshell
Luke12C my mom made me look up the bad effects of video games and this popped up first.
Luke12C this is why I like TED talk
that is where you are mistaken, this is TED not some biased place, if research says its good they will say that and if research says its bad they will say that, watch more ted videos and you will learn what to expect from them. facts not opinions.
Luke12C Cuz it's ted ed fam, what u think?
Really good video. I play games because I enjoy the strategic and tactical aspects of them (that's why I mainly play RPGs). Plus, I always try to play a game as good as possible and understand its mechanics. But I also enjoy to just play some Mario Kart or Mario Party with friends and just mess around for a good time
When you loose ranked match due the mistake of your teammate , imagine that rage and frustration you get, they will never talk about it ,and the depression you get on loosing continuously.
