I understand why you feel the interpretation that paul isn't an anti hero and wasn't actively using chani and the fremin to achieve his goals of power and revenge. however i think you are forgetting a key moment that marks Pauls change into an Anti Hero that you might be forgetting here.
it was foreshadowed through Lady Jessica too before Lady Jessica drinks the water of life because you can see she is more reserved and upset with the path paul is toying with; mainly with paul's growing lust for revenge after his father's death. She even reminds Paul that his father didn't believe in revenge in an attempt to help paul back to his senses. This scene was right before Lady Jessica takes the water of life where she fundamentally changes as she gains full prescience of the bennegeserit's plans. this is when her character completely changes and we see her become much more sided with the Benegeserit and more willing to use the fremin and even Paul to achieve the bigger plan. here we see the dycomidy swap in the scene where paul fights his mother telling her that its not hope; all the lies and manipulation the benegeserit order has placed over the fremin. this also was right before Paul drinks the water of life and it is in this moment that he too, completely changes.
the water of life marks the exact moment that pushes each character over the edge to become the anti-heros of the Dune story. like normal people they would contemplate the disastrous outcomes but their sense for who they were and their atreities honor held them back from leaning too far into the cruelty that sets them apart from the Harkonnens. we find that all it took to turn a good person into a bad person, was a 'little' push. in this case it was a big one, the water of life. notice how cold Paul is towards Chani after he wakes up from drinking the water of life when the previous scene between him and chani, paul was full of emotion crying that he was afraid of losing her. After he changes, he has no emotion, only hate and lust for power.

Thank you so much for this comment. You have made a fantastic point and I totally get it now. I did not pick up on the fact that they both changed so drastically after drinking the water of life. This makes perfect sense. Thank you!

@@HopefullyAwesome haha np. I also didnt notice this until my second viewing either. Ive heard from people that this is definitely one of those movies where you learn more and more details about the story by watching it multiple times. The Dune story is so dense that it couldn't possibly be all told or explained in character interaction and dialog alone so Denis has found brilliantly subtle ways to tell the story through the experience as a whole.
One of my favorite parts that did this for me was when Paul doesnt wear his royal seal ring from his father at all in the movie until the speech he gives to the fremin and when we see his change into the anti-hero. when he wasn't wearing the ring he was healing from the loss of his father. he was engrossed in the ways of the fremin, making a new home for himself and falling in-love with Chani. its what his father would have wanted as his father said in the first movie, "if you dont want it (meaning the power of being a duke) then you will be everything I needed you to be, my son." this shows that his father would have preferred that he healed and found a life for himself. not to chase revenge and power on his behalf.
But when Paul puts the ring on, this shows the path he ultimately decides to take. not a life among the fremin and his new found love Chani, but rather a life in the pursuit of revenge and power.
Incredibly moving, tragic, and brilliant cinematic writing by Denis with not a single word muttered to explain it. just brilliant, and sad most people miss details like these and just go off and say the movie is devoid of storytelling and is boring. :(

You’re totally right. I love how it can be so dense and full of themes and notions and yet also play as a sci-fi blockbuster. Both Dune movies are just so perfect. It’ll be hard for Dune Part 2 to not be my personal pick for movie of the year. I know we’ve still got 2/3 of the year left, but I just don’t know if anything can come close to this level of greatness.
