The Rocky Mountaineer was on my parents bucket list. However after my mom’s passing in 2013, I was still intent on taking my dad for his birthday. Unfortunately we lost him tragically in 2020. Still on my to-do list but sad that they never got to experience it. Life is short. So glad that you took your dad @DownieLive

Did you know that this route almost never happened? That’s right. It came about due to one person stubbornness.
At first the kicking horse pass was a 6 1/2% grade. East bound trains made it up but the problem was the westbound train. Only one out of every 3 trains made it down without a disaster derailing. It got bad enough that the Canadian government abandoned the project. However one guy brought the land and higher his own crew. He said why not go inside the mountain. And the spiral tunnels were built.
Here’s the hidden part of the story. Canada had given up on that pass and was routing it through usa. So to prove a route he tried to take a cargo train but was caught. I got to the point were it was delaying the trains big time so a challenge happened. He was given an oil train while another train without oil cars. First one to Vancouver wins and become the main line. To the engineer of the no oil train was behind the person. The oil train arrive just 3 minutes before the other train. There was a race back to calegry and yet this time the person was there 10 minutes ahead.

Now, I'm the age of his father and it brought a big smile to my face to see the close relation they enjoy. Again, it reminded me so much of how close my son and I are. I live in Toronto and I'll be taking the train to London to be with my son and family this Christmas. Thank you for sparking those happy memories.

Prior to the 1909 Spiral Tunnels, the CP mainline negotiated what was called 'The Big Hill.' Elderly members of my family shared stories of being on a passenger train going west down the Big Hill and they would have Canadian Pacific's most powerful locomotives operating in reverse to prevent the passenger train from coasting at a fast speed out of control down the steep grade. The Trans Canada Highway now follows some of the steep route where the tracks used to be....Great video...I've done that trip and want to do it again...cheers!!!

I turn 74 in February , which means your dad is only slightly m0ore than a year older then me. I think it was a year or so ago that I looked into a trip on the Mountaineer because of another CZcamsr, but after seeing this video, with your dad, I'll have to book a trip in 2023 for my 75th b'day. Your video was far better than the other one. BTW, your dad's pun about the 'moosetach" was really , really bad.

This takes me straight back to the trip I took in 2013 with my parents. We went gold leaf Jasper to Vancouver and it was magical. The Rockies are so very different to what we have here in Australia. I hope to visit again one day with my son so he can experience the magic like I did. Thanks for bringing back all the memories.

I can't even tell you how much I loved these 2 videos on The Rocky Mountaineer. I just finished reading a book called "The Last Spike" which is the definitive story about building the CP rail line across the country. It was an incredible feat which basically helped create Canada as it is today. I now have a new goal... ride the train through this part of the country.

ahhh the best video of your series.... (thus far) it is incredible that you gifted your papi with a train trip from Vancouver to Banff. You are kind and generous and.... your papi always has the "bon mots'" welcome to Banff and welcome to Alberta. ... excellences with authenticity.

I have a golden rail spike that my husband brought me back from a train hopping trip from Québec to Halifax and he spray painted it gold. So i got a little choked up at the Craigellachie bit. There is nothing quite like travelling by train, my grandfather was a conductor for the CN and i've myself spend over 3 months of my life on a train if you put all my trips back to back. It's not "boring" like some people think, it's a lot more exicitng than flying or other modes of travel. It really shaped who i am as a person and made me more adventurous i think. I enjoy your channel so much! ❤️ and that bit waving at your friends was just priceless hahaha

Neat to see the trip from 3 Valley Gap to Banff. I’ve driven that portion my whole life going to the Okanagan to visit grandparents, or now that I live there, going to AB to visit family. Pretty cool perspective to see it from the train. I’ve always wanted to take the Rocky Mountaineer, I didn’t realize it went through the spiral tunnels!

Another great video, Mike. Now, I'm going to have to go back and catch up on all your other videos. Great work! Glad you mentioned Revelstoke and its history. It has one of my favorite railcams and I check it frequently. I am retired from the U S Coast Guard and also retired from the local Sheriff's Dept. Always looking for great places to go and you are a big help.

I agree with the Revelstoke railcam 👍 I spent a night there, on my way from my home city, to Vancouver. The local museum was across the street from where I had dinner, and the historical rail photos were absolutely incredible. The winter scenes were especially interesting, as they receive a huge amount of snow there. I'm not sure if it has changed since, but 30 years ago, many of the homes had steep metal roofing to allow the snow to slide off.
