Goodness me, what are you trying to achieve with this - panic (outside of Europe)???
Firstly Stromboli is NOT in Sicily but on a very small island off the coast of Italy. Etna is in Sicily. The activity on Stromboli and Etna is normal and happens regularly throughout each year with Stromboli erupting, to various degrees, almost all the time.
Those of us in Europe find it difficult to understand how ignorant (uneducated) some people are about our continent. The only reason you are all hearing about this now is because of social media, it has been going on for centuries. Please stop catastrophising normal events just for 'clicks'. "Officials with the Italian Institute for Geosciences and Volcanology have observed further volcanic activity at Mount Stromboli Volcano in the Aeolian Islands, Sicily Region, July 11. An explosive eruption occurred at the volcano between around 14:07-14:10 July 11, producing an ash cloud rising to around 1,800 meters (6,000 feet) and pyroclastic flows reaching the sea. Ash is being dispersed in a southerly direction. Increased seismic activity was also observed at the time of the eruption. Authorities have advised tourists and residents on the island to move away from beaches, and masks are being distributed to protect people from the ash. The Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) level was raised to the highest red level due to the eruption."

They actually can go straight up like that. I was in the Philippines when Mt Pinatubo erupted on June 15 1991 and it actually looked like a nuclear mushroom cloud. We were at Clark AB and had to evacuate to another island in the Philippines; however, the ash cloud was so high we couldn’t be flown out because the ash would cause the aircraft engines to fail. So we were removed from Luzon or specifically Subic Bay to a much smaller island north of Luzon on US Navy ships. You can see videos of the eruption. It was a pyroclastic volcano so the ash cloud went thousands of feet up into the sky. In fact it was high enough that ash was caught up in the jet stream and found it way thousands of miles away from the Philippines. Pinatubo had not erupted in 600+ years prior to 15 June 1991 but it put on one hell of a show that day and for the next several days that followed…google it you will see what I mean. I think you may be confused because volcanos that produce lava erupt and explode “boiling” lava into the air…most of the lava spills out over the top of the eruption hole and runs down the side of the volcano solidifying once it cools and leaving black lava rock. Whereas a pyroclastic volcano has little or no lava and explodes high into the sky shooting ash and chemicals thousands of feet into the air.

If the pyroclastic flow cloud had covered one of those boats, anyone on it would have been uncomfortable at best and badly injured or dead at worst.
