I've had this happen too and it always sucks..... I've started using the team catfish vice grip style grips. That extra foot or so of reach and lack of concern for not having my hands in the way has all but eliminated landing break offs...... It's what works for me and is definitely worth trying

@@michaelspunich7273 it’s funny when I was like 10 I hooked a 20 somethin pound carp in a spillway and my dad went down to land it and I was yelling don’t grab the line. Let’s just say he grabbed the line and u know what happened next 😂

Grabbing line is almost a necessity in tight spots with kayaks, and big fish. There is no room to maneuver a big one with softer rods. That is just the price you pay for the excitement of the challenge. Anyone can land large fish from a big boat and room to play it. That’s why people pay to do it. He did everything right, sometimes it happens all the same. It still hurts in the moment… or forever 🤣

This is still one of my most favorite videos of yours so I revisit from time to time. Heartbreaking every time I watch it but such a great battle! It's funny how the ones that get away leave a deeper impression than the ones we land. 😭

Really dig your channel. You and I approach fishing as far as passion and personality in similar ways. There was another video where you said that every flathead has a unique personality. That's a great observation and 100% truth.
I'm into hunting big blues. They seem more like Great White sharks devoid of any sort of personality other than killing foodz and sliming everything they touch.

@@RiverCertified I wouldn’t say it teaches you what not to do as much as there’s 3x as much heartbreak as there is “Ws” chasing trophies, my buddy was hooked up to a 60+ this spring that basically spooled him on his cat gear then he went back and caught a 44lb on on his lighter gear, heartbreak is part of the game I think your break in this video is pure bad luck

Brother no disrespect I'm a fisherman myself I've lost fish that size I'm bigger and that close to the boat the very same way by putting my hand on the line trying to pull on it and I've learned not to do that I use the rod and reel to bring them in when I saw you put your hand on that line it brought me memories of the last time that I lost a flathead and I said oh no I hope he doesn't lose it and then instantly you lost a fish but I'm proud of you because you did not use any profanity you restrained yourself from it and because of that this is my first video of watching your CZcams channel I will subscribe to your Channel. That was the saddest fishing video I've seen. That was a giant! I gut shot and lost a 200+ inch 12 pointer in 1991 and still not over it. 😫

I read an article on a guide and he said 95% of the gut shot deer were found within 70-100 yards away. But they back out. That was an amazing fish i can’t believe he didn’t yell wtFfff i would have had to cut footage

I was coming home to be with her and I was involved in an accident about the same time she passed. I will have a permanent reminder of her passing because the wreck left its mark. When I watched the first video of you catching a beast on the yak. I knew right then I wasn’t gonna stop until I experienced it.
You’ve had me hooked ever since man.
I've felt the same anguish and heartache myself brother, more than once. I was out nightfishing about 20 yrs ago, it was a slow night and we had caught just a few small channel cats, so we were putting down alot more beer than we planned. Around 3am I hear my line ripping away over the lynrd skynyrd playing in the background. As I grab my rod and start the battle I could tell right away it was a monster and that I better slowly wear him down. We were not properly rigged for a monster, we didnt believe there were fish in this lake larger than probably 30lbs, I was using 20lb mono with 30lb leader on a medium-heavy action rod. The fish had my rod doubled over and peeling drag, so I let him run and wear himself out, after 10 min I start to apply a little pressure, he doesnt struggle and I get him to the bank, when we got a look at him all 3 of us were in shock at the size of the beast. He had to have been at least 40-45lbs, with a head the size of a shark, as I worked my way down the somewhat steep bank I slipped and lost my footing, which may have had alot to do with the dozen Budweisers I had consumed. As I slipped my leg got tangled in the line, popped the line, and the beast swam off as I drove to grab him. We found out months later that an older gentleman who lived on the lake had been catching these monster flathead in the large reservoirs in the area, and releasing them into this small 35 acre lake. All these years later, when I run into my old fishing buddies, this is the 1st story that is talked about of course.

Dang, I felt like puking after seeing that! Damn I feel your pain! I hooked a mammoth blue cat @ Lake Texoma a couple years back. I had him on my 14 foot ugly stick, full spool of trilene xt 20lb line, trying for a triple digit blue on 20lb Trilene. There was a 132caught near where I was fishing. Got the hit at 1am and had him on for 35 minutes before he finally made it out to deeper water, couldn't turn him when he found depth, long story short I GOT SPOOLED!!!! MY FIRST TIME! I'M STILL SICK OVER IT. MY NEPHEW HIT H OH M WITH A SPOT LIGHT WHEN I HAD HIM IN THE SHALLOWS, HE SWEARS IT WAS WELL OVER 100LBS. IT WAS THE BIGGEST CAT I'VE EVER HOOKED FOR SURE! HIT HIM ON A AROUND A 9 TO 10 INCH GIZZARD SHAD!!! THERE WAS LIGHT RAIN AND LIGHTNING BOLTS AROUND US, MY NEPHEN KEPT SAYING YOUR GOING TO GET HIT BY LIGHTNING, AND I REPLIED, WHAT A WAY TO GO! JESUS LOVES FISHERMEN!!!!!
I primarily fish for bass in freshwater and bull red in saltwater , both from kayaks , but after subscribing to your channel I might have to go back to my roots on the Sabine River and try my hand with a flathead. Keep up the awesome work.

Gosh, I know the feeling, what a bummer. I once hooked what would have been the new world record Shoal Bass in 2002. I fought the beast forever until he straightened out the hooks on my lure on 3rd run.. I hooked him again the next morning and it was a repeat performance when the hooks pulled free after 3rd run. I had just landed a 5 3/4 lb shoal bass and this one dwarfed it. I will never get over losing that fish, nor will you. Learn from it. It keeps you going back.

I know that feeling.....I'm not a catfish guy but I am a bass guy and we sometimes hook these big slobs on swimbaits. The last one I hooked was close to yours and it killed me when he broke off right at the boat after a 20 minute right on a bass rod.......Nice fishing spot and great video.......

I do this same type of flatnoggin fishing. Tight spots/live bait. We got a lot off big fish here in N. C.
