    As both a photographer, backpacker, and park ranger. I am a huge fan of the Shimoda Explore V2. Not only can I confidently carry my expensive camera gear out into the field or even just while working, I also love the massive water bottle pockets that comfortably fit my large Nalgene's and also is big enough to hold a tripod and be strapped in. Bonus points for it coming in a really nice green color that looks amazing with my park service uniform.

    I am searching for a bag that can carry my sony 200-600mm about 1-2 other lenses like a 23-70mm and a 50mm or something, plus my dji mini 3 pro with rc controller and the batterys, a 14“ mbp and a tripod. A plus (but not a must) if i could fit a gimbal like the dji rs 3 in.
    Any recommendations?

    Having tried many camera backpacks, rigged hiking/everyday backpacks for photography gear hands down the best and most comfortable is Shimoda. They have a 25L version that is great for outdoor adventures, exploring urban areas and general travel. It is on the heavier side but man is their harness system and straps super comfortable. Highly recommend.

    I often need to carry a tripod, but only use it for some slow shutter speed shots. I really like packs that will fit a smallish travel tripod inside. That make the pack stand out less as a camera pack and also keep the tripod protected and not as dangly as some outside the pack solutions. Several of the LowePro Photo Sport packs allow for inside storage as the camera compartment isn't as wide as the pack (haven't tried the last Photo Sport iteration though) and a small tripod will fit beside.

    I looked for. camera bag recently which could also function as a daypack for hiking and various single day adventures. Sadly I didn't find anything I was happy with, so I looked at camera inserts. Far cheaper, more adaptable and means I don't need to buy another pack which is just useable for a niche. The Tenba BYOB 10 is what I went for, fits 2 mirrorless camera bodies, 3 lenses, filters and batteries etc comfortably. Happy with not having to buy another pack and have the flexibility to use it in whatever carry setup I need.

    I'm surprised you didn't show how easy/hard it would be to use quick access pockets while carrying the bag. Part of PD's appeal is being able to access anything while carrying the bag. I don't know if any of those can also do it.

  • @timothylinn
    @timothylinn Před rokem +5

    I think that Shimoda Explore V2 bag is easily the best overall camera pack you can buy. There isn't a more comfortable option, and I haven't seen or used one that is better built. That said, you highlighted the side access by using a small, short APS-C camera. It's worth noting that for anything larger, Shimoda's side access design is one of the worst you can find. The side door on the pack is nice and big. The side access door on the interior core unit is _much_ smaller, it is rigid, and it is an odd shape. The size, shape, and the fact that it is rigid means that it doesn't conform to the shape of your hand or the camera as you reach in to remove gear. You can't reach in and pull even a medium-sized camera like a Fujifilm X-T4 w/ an L-bracket or Canon R5 straight out. You have to maneuver the camera through the opening at an angle to remove it. This necessitates an inefficient interior design that wastes space and increases the risk that you'll drop the camera as you try to remove it. (Because Shimoda puts the side access on the right side, most people will be removing it with their left hand.) I've owned both the Explore V2 and the Action X30. I don't use either when I'm shooting in urban areas or developing countries where side access is critical. But if I can set the bag down and use the rear opening, the Shimodas are my first choice. This limitation is really thing only thing that keeps Shimoda packs from being just about perfect.
    As an aside, The WANDRD PRVKE really should be on your list. It too is one of the absolute best.

      I'm right handed and have the Action X30. I retrieve the camera from the side access with my right hand. Shimoda has a video on how this is easily done, you should check it out. I have a Canon 7Dii with capture clip plate attached and it comes out just fine. To easily remove a medium sized camera with lens you'll have to arrange it in the core unit such that the back of the camera is facing the side access door. I guess you could say this is inefficient but I never expected to be able to retrieve a camera from the side access by positioning it any other way.

    • @timothylinn
      @timothylinn Před rokem +1

      @@willbritton133 Hey, Will. I'm glad the design works for you. I've seen the video Ian made arguing in favor of his decision to put the door on the righthand side of the bag. All I can say is that I completely disagree-and so do most other bag designers. That said, I do think reasonable people can differ on this. Ian acknowledges that a person's physical build will affect their opinion. For example, when I lower my right arm to open a right side door, the pack wants to slide off my right shoulder and down my arm. This doesn't ever happen to a right-handed person if the bag is hanging from their left shoulder. Anyway, having used both styles extensively, I can counter every one of Ian's arguments.
      The issue of right hand door vs left hand door is a separate discussion from one about Ian's design of the door itself. I happen to agree with you on positioning the camera so that the back of the camera faces the side access door. I would argue that this is a pretty efficient use of space. Unfortunately, the R5 with a very low profile L-bracket will not even fit straight through the door. You have to angle it to get it out. This means the camera compartment you create for it needs to be big enough to angle it. This is what causes the inefficiency. As a long time member of Shimoda's official Facebook group, I am far from the only owner who has expressed disappointment over the side door. Ian's a great guy-and to his credit he usually responds to constructive criticism-but when it comes to this topic he's pretty dismissive. He has described rectangular side doors as "utilitarian" (as if this is a bad thing) and advises customers to buy a different brand of bag if his design doesn't work for them. This happens to be the same advise that I give to people who prioritize side access, so on this Ian and I agree. :-)

    I have been using Lowepro bags for ever.....they are just the best, period. I still use my very first one, and after 20 years of lugging around 2 dslrs, 4 lenses, flashes, cables, and many other things, I only recently had to replace one plastic buckle on the sternum strap. The bag is still in top condition. I will definitely keep using Lowerpro. I own/have owned just about every camera backpack and sling out there and I would say if you are a professional get the Lowepro and if you do outdoor stuff get a Shimoda. I love Peak Design products and them as a company and own damn near everything they have but I stopped using their backpacks and slings for mainly one reason, they don't take security seriously, ridiculous I can't lock a bag carrying thousands in camera gear and computers. I have a nice Monfrotto NX camera backpack that can carry camera gear in the bottom and regular stuff in the top and I just switched my Peak Design 5L Sling for a PGY Tech sling and I love that thing. It looks beautiful, the quality is amazing and it is very functional. I still have a ton of Peak Design stuff like camera straps, the Tech Pouch is the best but they need to up their game. The one thing that was nice about the Everyday Backpack was when you flew it was easy to get stuff out the top when the bag was lying on the ground under the seat. The design however is highly inefficient for packing camera gear and taking it in and out also and too rigid.

      @@PackHacker I have looked at the Shimoda but never bought any of them because I don't have a use case for it but if you look at the guys that do serious off the beaten path photography like Nick Page, they use Shimodas. At the end of the day I think the Lowepro is the best, the problem is people that steal camera gear know what it is and know they usually have serious camera gear in them so be careful where you take it. I’ve tried the Peak Design Everyday 30L v2, Wandrd Prvke v2 31 & 21, & PGYTech Onemo. I’m looking for a backpack that can carry camera gear & fit under a seat. My plan is to use it as my camera bag w/ a carryon suitcase for leisure, & use it to carry clothes with my camera gear in my Pelican 1510 when I need more camera gear.
    The Peak Design looks nice, but it was quite uncomfortable to me as the shoulder straps aren’t very flexible at the top. The straps are also pretty narrow, which I found weird for such a large bag. My favorite thing is this bag could carry 2 laptops easily, which is key for me since I telework & have a videography business on the side. It also doesn’t fit under the seat. I personally didn’t like the access of it from the side & top. It’s a big bag, but I feel like the design limits the carrying capacity.
    I’ve tried the Prvke 21 & 31. I had a camera cube w/ each. The 21 fits under a seat, but it can’t carry 2 laptops. The 31 is a beast, but it’s hugeeee (& can’t fit under a seat). I really did like the design of these bags, & they were super comfortable to carry. I hate that the camera cubes don’t have their own straps, & they’re also a bit weird to open if you use them as a bag by themselves.
    The Onemo has by far the best camera cube. This camera cube is a mini bag that expands its capacity. You can’t access it while it’s in that bag, so note that. It has a strap included, which is a plus. The backpack itself is where this option falls apart. It does have the largest opening, which would make it ideal for the most gear, but it’s extremely stiff as a bag. I didn’t try fitting this under the seat on a plane, but I’m guessing it wouldn’t fit. I would potentially just buy this camera cube/shoulder bag again.
    I returned all these bags, & I’ve almost given up 😭. I may be asking for too much here 😅.

      There are not that many camera bags that can easily go under a seat. Eather you throw a sling on the Peak Design Camera cube, and slide that under the seat, or you're stuck with a bag than can barely hold a body + 2 lenses.
      Sort of the travelphotographers problem... either bring clothes as carrry on, or your camera gear.

      That’s a tough call, Al. You might be best off with a large camera cube that slides into your daypack, but you will be pressed to find a camera cube that can fit your lenses.
      On our site, PackHacker.com, we have carry-on compliance listed for every bag we test! That’s an excellent place to start.

      Any random backpack compliant the size fitted with a camera insert. I used a Tenba BYOB on an easyjet flight to do just this recently.

      I have an endurax large back pack the one that does not have any hard shell paddin. It has top and side access. I carry on the plane a full frame with a 28 to 200. A crop with a 16mm. I also carry a 56mm, a 360 camera, tripod (a joby if on the plane), a ff 14mm, 30mm crop sensor, tilt lens, flash, filters,batteries, sd card sleeve, cables, small flash diffuser, an intervelometer, 15.6 inch laptop, and a battery pack. All of that fits under the plane seat. The bag has top and side access and front access.. And it costs 70 dollars. The bags in this video follow the packhacker tradition of recommending the most expensive gear that they can find to hawk. One thing that I despise about this channel.... no way I am paying 395 for a camera bag. A non rigid bag is key for the plane.

    Bought the Thule earlier this year. While I LOVE the concept, it is painful to carry. The McKinnon 25L is arriving tomorrow. Heard good things on the comfort of that one.

    How do I do one bag travel but with camera gear?

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  Před rokem +2

      Go with a larger camera backpack with space for extra gear, or get a camera cube that fits into your travel backpack! 😃

    Your thumbnail shows a MacKinnon Nomatic for $199. Not sure where you got that pricing. And it's hardly a 'basic' bag, again as the thumbnail states.

      @@PackHacker I have the Atlas Athlete backpack and am very happy with it. In my opinion, the best backpack that can protect lots of gear and have additional space for other travel gear. The fitting is also excellent for going on hiking trips and carrying heavy gear without any problem due to the correct fitting and the waist straps.
