  • As a performance compact crossover, the 2021 #BMW #X3 M40i is close to flawless. This is a seriously fun #SUV that has a turbocharged inline-six with 382 horsepower, rear-bias AWD and an 8-speed auto. As an M40i, this X3 is an M Performance variant meaning that it’s a midway point between the popular X3 and the wildly focused X3 M.
    So where does this M40i version lie between those two ends? Let’s find out!

    100% a drivers SUV. A great option if you need space and everyday practicality but still want driver engagement. Switching modes provides incredible versatility. A great and responsive BMW B58 engine and a really good connection with the road are the signatures of this vehicle. The all wheel drive system is brilliant and when combined with the adaptive dampers provides real confidence on more demanding roads. Even on open highway the M40i can become a quiet and economical cruiser and yet retain that more energetic dynamic as required.

    We did a fully loaded factory order and we pick it up tomorrow! One of the most fun vehicles I have driven and was the front runner of the 18 different SUVs we took for test drives.

    Excellent review and very professional presentation. You touched on the key points I was interested in hearing about -- the driving experience.

    Yes I too am lucky enough to own one of these awesome vehicles, I absolutely love driving it, best BMW ever in my opinion. Great ride on our Australian roads.

    Have one of these and was surprised with just how well it drives, even for a BMW. The architecture is based on a 5/7 series and that’s probably why it feels so composed at speed and in the corners; whilst giving that proper famed BMW damping.

    Great review, we also have a ‘21 M40i, totally agree on the ride quality, don’t expect a smooth, plush ride. If the road is smooth, the ride is smooth, if the road is rough, you guessed it. Swapped out the run flats, definitely helped, but didn’t cure. Go for the X5, if you want the best ride and dynamics.

    Calgary BWM eh. I thought that license plate looked familiar hahaha. Got one a while back, love it so much. Although I did not get the one with the heads up display or the 360 camera option. Did not think I needed those.

    • @hotcars
      @hotcars  Před 3 lety +1

      Apparently, ordering something like the 360 camera during this semiconductor shortage will be the difference between having a new X3 delivered in a timely manner or not

    • @HEEHEEBOII
      @HEEHEEBOII Před 3 lety

      @@hotcars I ordered mine a bit earlier and the sales person said they aren't that impacted at the time. I would imagine it's getting pretty bad for them. Car prices are also going up a bit because of the semiconductor issue. Although the sales person told me the price hike on the X5 is BMW's way of preventing people buying these cars in Canada and shipping them to China or Russia to get around the tariffs.

    I recently picked up one of these bad boys, but I don't think I'd call it "compact", it's kinda chonky. or are other suvs way bigger?

    My '23 is a blast to drive. My only complaint is the speaker is sort on lame. Go for the upgrade when you spec yours out. Displaying the tach on the HUD would have been nice

      i have the 22 and my only hate about this car is the low end torque it has in the city. Its way to torqy.

      @Snaproll47518 Před rokem

      @@justinbernardo8240 It's the tradeoff for 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. I once had a 2011 BMW 335D that produced 425 lbs of torque. It was a blast to drive but I left it home on icy days. Replacing $1200 worth of tires annually was part of the cost of ownership.

    • @grahaml3097
      @grahaml3097 Před 3 lety +4

      If you are in comfort mode, the valves are closed in the exhaust so no pops and crackles and would be quieter. If you go to sport or sport+ the valves open and you get louder sound and pops.

    I get the commentary, but was hopping the vehicles performance would have been better highlighted. You gave great detail but a true car person wants to get a sense of the personality of the car by the drive not only the commentary.
