    I drove my LZ0 (stock) 2200 miles towing 5,000lbs. Left with full DEF and added only one 2.5g Peak DEF, 1 quart of oil and averaged 16mpg cruising 65mph - 70mph. The truck ran perfect, and trans oil never got over 200F. Truck is awesome.

    I have a '23 AT4 with the LZO. Tow my boat here and there. 7000 miles on the truck so far, mostly highway and I've gone through 8 gallons of DEF. I've towed my 6K boat about 700 of those 7000 miles. 17MPG towing with boat in the hills of Central WA state. Power is great. Best driving truck I've owned. Last truck was a 2013 F150 FX4 SCREW with 3.5 Ecoboost. Great power in that truck and about 2-3 MPG less while towing. Rear springs of the AT4 are WAY BETTER than the Ford.

    I'm finding a difference between using the Jugs vs def from the Pump. I actually think I'm getting more DEF in the tank then I am with the Jugs. They both say full on the not so accurate gauge. However, I think the pump gives you a better top up because of the auto shut off at the pump as apposed to guessing when it's full with the jugs so you don't spill it down the side of the truck.

  • @3.0dmax
    @3.0dmax Před 11 měsíci +23

    First off, excellent vid. Second, not trying to nitpick, but the DEF tank is 5.3 gallons. Also, you're driving along interstates for the most part. Every Love's, Pilot, etc has DEF at the big rig lanes and it is much cheaper there vs the 2.5g jugs. Yep, the LZ0 uses more DEF than the LM2 unfortunately. DEF is used to combat NOx. Higher RPM and EGTs makes more NOx. Slow down 5-10 MPH if you're extremely low or empty on DEF and need to make it somewhere to fill up. On that note, it's not like it's immediately speed limited if the DEF tank runs empty. Plus your Banks gauge should give you actual percent remaining vs the dummy bar gauge on the cluster.

Inevitable, especially with these ridiculous 0w-16 and 0w-8 oils. Some BMWs are worse than this truck and it is considered acceptable. I keep saying, the solution is to run the special Amsoil 0w-20 developed for this truck. It is thicker than the 0w-20 from the dealership , much closer to a 5w-30 than a 0w-20, and it handles fuel dilution well. It will not burn oil on the Amsoil, or at the very least not as much. The stock oil is 7.8cst at 100c. The Amsoil 0w-20 light duty diesel is 8.9cst at 100c.

      I’ve never seen a transmissions fail due to running at low temperatures, however I have seen millions of transmissions fail, running at higher temperatures
      GM’s heavy duty, 10 speeds in their 2500 and up series trucks all run in the 140° temperature range with the same exact ULV trans. Fluid as in the half ton trucks.
      Three-quarter ton truck 10 speeds are required to tow heavy loads, and therefore need to run at a lower temperatures to give proper protection and keep the viscosity of the oil from getting too thin which could possibly cause failure in the bearings and planetary gears

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP Před 11 měsíci

      @@MarkSmith-cz3by I think that’s because the vast majority retain OEM designed thermostats which keep the fluid at a minimum operating temperature. A quick search suggests that the GM 10-speed HD transmission has a thermostat which opens at 158 degrees, and is spec’d to have level checked when between that an 170. Not sure where you’ve seen that 140 figure, as forums suggest 185-205 is pretty common, even a bit more when towing heavier. I think a GM engineer even said their transmissions and fluid are good to 250+.
      Of course I’d never want mine to creep up that high but I think that the 170-200 range is pretty common and acceptable.

    The DEF to diesel usage ratio is 1gallon DEF to 50gallon of diesel regardless of the driving conditions. It is all about neutralizing the NOx that is the byproduct of burning fuel. The ratio is the same unless the fuel quality somehow causes more NOx. Now when towing, more diesel is used because of reduced MPG. Also, the DEF to empty is a calculation that the CPU does based on current average MPG.
    For example, when I'm towing, the computer tells me 500 miles DEF range. Start driving on normal commute and that range gets twice as long. My setup averages 30.5MPG regular drive and 15.6MPG towing a 6,000lb travel trailer.

Yes, GM needs larger fuel and Def tanks. Generally I drive easier then many people. I get less mileage with mine, but I use far less Def then you do and others I've heard about. The " you are set to driver 2" message you talk about, and being a probable tech issue? No it isn't a tec problem. It's Operator error. To fix that, start using the other key fob. The key fobs are what determines the setting there. Key fob 1 and key fob 2= Driver 1 and Driver 2. Or program it with the easy out button. We love ours. Happy driving.

    A lot of these complaints really point to the reality and fact that this truck isn’t built for regular towing. Nearly all the modifications that he made were to help it sustain safe load leveling and reduced temps generated from working the truck. The DEF consumption alludes to the idea that it’s calibrated to be used mostly empty and to compensate for the increase emissions, it’s gotta DUMP the DEF. 99% of the issues brought up here, including fuel and DEF capacity, load carrying, temp control are ALL resolved by using an HD truck. These are the compromises of a lighter duty truck. After having owned a small diesel half ton and now an HD, i can safely say, even for the occasional towing I do, I’ll still jump for the HD. Better to have a hammer bigger than necessary than to wish you had a bigger hammer. No matter how much mod’s you put on a half ton, you wont increase its GVWR/GCWR. It also will see more wear from carrying heavy loads than an HD. So unless you only tow or haul once a year, a Gas or Diesel HD just makes more sense at least to me. I certainly wouldn’t buy new, pricing of both halftones and HD’s have gone nuts. I recently got a 2500 diesel for 19K with tons of life left in it and i plan to run it indefinitely, even making my own biodiesel if i have to.

I own a 2021 2500HD with the 6.6 Duramax and I tow a 33' 10,000# travel trailer. My 2500 gets on average 12.5 mpg with highs of 15 and lows of 11 mpg. DEF usage is about 1700 miles per tank while towing. Oil consumption is near zero, understanding this is a completely different power plant. All in my experience is very close to yours including the DEF and fueling challenges while trailering. A game changer for me is when I started using the Open Roads app which allows me to use the commercial fueling lanes at most truck stops. So fueling is easy, DEF is right there, you get bulk fueling pricing. After the fees and service charge, I see about a 30 cent per gallon savings. The real benefit is the use of the commercial lanes. A lot of RVers use the app especially the diesel motorhomes. I think the plan is limited to products on the commercial lanes, so no gasoline.

    I do not experience oil burning in my LZO. But I did buy and break in my truck during summer of 2023. I have always suspected oil burning in any engine is due to bad rings, bad valve seals, or bad PCV systems. IMHO, bad rings in a new vehicle are due to improper break in, improper clearances during manufacturing, or inadequate part sourcing. Leaking valve seals on a new engine can be improper manufacturing, inferior part sourcing, or improper clearances due to design.

    • @hochhaul
      @hochhaul Před 4 měsíci

      The oil consumption is due to an issue with a baffle that a supplier didn't make correctly and there is an updated part. The oil vapor that was being pulled into the intake due to this defective part is causing increased DEF usage. Even with that issue, it isn't burning any more oil than engines from other manufacturers. Honda and Toyota tell customers that burning 1 quart every 1200 miles is normal for even their small sedans and crossover SUV's that don't tow.

    The DEF and oil usage is a deal killer for me. It negates much of the gain or all in gas mileage due the cost of DEF and extra oil. Plus the additional cost of the truck. In 2023, it's just ridiculous to use a quart of oil in 1,000 miles. For the love of Pete, my old 99 Jeep never needs oil added between oil changes and it has a rear main drip. My Tundras with over 150k on the road have barely used any oil. Again, never added any oil in all those miles. Between buying DEF and adding oil, I don't want the BS. Hey Tim, Sounds like GM has some compromises with capacities.
    Made the DEF tank too blasted small, esp since Chevrolet knows the mpg of DEF gets notably lower with towing (run hotter combustion, make more NOx).
    Fuel economy: 13mpg is decent for >6K trailered, ESPECIALLY for westbound. My gas 3/4 gets about 30% less mpg westbound with headwind vs eastbound.
    Oil consumption? 1 qt/1000 miles??? No thanks. My old EcoDiesel (ran 15w-40) used NO OIL when towing on 1500 mile travel trailer towing trips. Now with my gas 3/4 ton, I have used 0.5 qt on a 3500 mile trip out west (NY to North Dakota) and back including all local driving. So, not sure GM has any company with the oil use rate.

    Tim, I have the 2021 Duramax 3.0, so it isn’t a completely apples to apples comparison, but I’ll just share some of my observations…
    I am towing about a 5,400lb travel trailer, which has more wind resistance than your truck on the flatbed. My normal mpg towing is in the 10-13 range. (24-32 running empty)
    I have probably between 8,000-10,000 miles towing. As far as DEF usage, I’ve had zero concerns except for my first major trip, which was probably with less than 2,500 miles on the truck. I discount those issues as I think the truck was probably still adapting to conditions.
    I use a fuel card that gives me a significant discount at a number of different truck stops. The app allows me to search for fuel along my route. I figure at 200-250 miles, I’ll be needing fuel under worst case conditions, so I simply plan that stop using the app. Typically, I’ll top off DEF at the pump every other fill up. (In routine driving around home, DEF lasts many months)
    The price for DEF at the pump is typically around 4.25-4.50, much less than even Walmart. I’ll go out of my way if I ever need DEF around home and get it at a truck stop. I pretty much never buy a jug anymore unless I am traveling miles away from available truck stops, and towing.
    Hope this info is helpful!

    Also my first 2 oil changes I got it changed within 4,000 miles
    Now it will be changed every 5,000 miles
    Also I only use Exon Diesel
    Titan has a 43 gallon fuel tank that you can get installed ,would be great for your channel
    And you want have to stop as much

    Could the driver 2 parameter thing have been tied to the key fobs? I remember a coworker talking about how they color coded their key fobs because the truck tied each key fob to the driver's mirror/seat/etc settings.
    Sounds like you had the perfect trans cooler setup. I would be super happy with 150F on a 76 degree day! Shame about DEF consumption when towing. I've heard DEF usage is pretty minimal when unloaded. It's a trade off I can live with.

      @@ALMX5DP The 1 quart/2,000 mile generally accepted rule is still excessive. Most people don't check their oil. To burn that much would not only require frequent top off, it would require almost constant checking. It's like owning an old, high mileage engine, but this engine isn't old or high mileage.
      I might also add that diesels under light load wash down, which means it's likely still consuming oil nearly as fast as laden but it's just being replaced with fuel. Even if it shows 1 quart loss, it's likely burned significantly more than that.

At that stage, it's probably an indication of imminent engine failure or at the very least a serious issue that warrants investigation. An at any significant level you'd definitely be able to smell fuel on the dip stick when checking your levels.

      @@ALMX5DP The oil consumption is so fast, probably not enough to offset completely. But it's definitely happening, and it's also a diesel. Diesel is oil and doesn't burn completely under light load, so washing happens, even with new engines. Also, you'll smell diesel in the oil with even minimal washout.

      Yeah I would like to see an auxillary trans cooler on this truck. I'm glad they run pretty cool when unloaded but 195 to 200F is pretty high. I would be changing my trans fluid every 30 or 40k if I towed often with this powertrain. Still better than the stupid temperatures that GM ran the 6-speeds at. They would run 195F unloaded from what I have seen. This 10-speed might actually benefit from a different trans cooler bypass thermostat. Odds are, the cooler bypass is forcing the transmission to operate hotter while towing than it needs to.

    They probably run less EGR and more DEF to reduce NOX. EGR is power robbing and hard on the engine. Putting hard carbon back into engine reduces engine life which is why modern diesels don't last as long.

    Nice 62 truck. My lease comes up soon on my 2020 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel and I was considering the Chevy 3L Duramax. I tow a 6300lb Travel Trailer. I get about 13 to 15mpg while towing, but I have a 26 gallon tank. I have a 7 gallon DEF tank, but my truck seems to sip DEF when I am towing and at highway speeds. I towed from Maryland to Gatlinburg and back last year and didn't have to add DEF until I got back. Also, I have never had to add oil to my 3.0 diesel between oil changes. I'm 76 years old and I am comfortable driving 4 to 5hr stretches in the Ram. You have me thinking about keeping it. By the way, Chrysler specifies using a full synthetic 5W-40 Euro oil like Pennziol Platinum. Would a better oil help control your oil consumption?

      Your Ram is working well for you, I wouldn't change unless you just want a new truck. And even then, I'd get a gasser. Other than HD's, the diesels just aren't worth the hassle anymore. If your constantly hooked up to 10K, then yeah, get a 2500. For occasional towing, gas is too convenient for the other 90% of driving.

    • @Pickuptrucktalk
      @Pickuptrucktalk  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Somebody had a similar question albeit with 87 octane and a 5.0L Ford F-150.
      Question: OK, so what's the all-in (diesel, DEF, oil) average cost per mile, as compared to, say an f150 5.0 that uses 87 and has none of that additional expense?
      Answer: I don’t know. I was going to figure it all out, but it got to be too much. My quick math says I went through a full tank every 300 miles. That’s 24 gallons x 4 or 96 gallons. Diesel is around $4 a gallon. A quart of oil is $12. And 6 gallons of DEF should be 2.5/6 equals 2.25 boxes. A box is $10 or so. That is around $22.
      96x4 (384) + $12 plus $24 for DEF or so. This works out to be $420 or thereabouts.
      A 5.0L would get less MPG of the diesel in my testing. 87 octane in Nebraska is .25 cents cheaper per gallon than diesel. So let’s say the gas gets 10 MPG and you have 1200 miles to go. If my math is correct, gas would be a 120 or more in gallons bought at $3.75 a gallon equals $450 in fuel. If the gas gets better than I assumed, then that price comes down somewhat.
      I’ve never seen a gas truck best a diesel in towing MPG.

    I’m really interested in this power train and truck but the amount of oil burning is a deal breaker. A quart per 1000 miles isn’t okay IMO. If you went by a 7k oil change interval you’ve basically paid for two oil changes in that one interval. Hopefully Chevy fixes the issue.
