  • Unlike many British criminals, Harold Shipman has never been regarded with any particular loathing or disgust. This is perhaps because many of us have a sneaking feeling of sympathy for the good doctor…

I thought the was a report published recently that said that old people didn't get discharged from hospitals to care homes with COVID......it was staff going back and forth that spread it amongst the care home residents.
My own mother was already in a care home, she contracted COVID, which we were told "it was only a minor bout of COVID".
A year of so later, the day after she died from old age, one of the care staff we were speaking to above her life let slip " of course she nearly died from COVID last year", the look of surprise on our faces suggested that we were unaware of this information. She quickly made her excuses and left.....!

Shipman has left an enduring legacy of pain and suffering in his wake,as I'm sure you are aware.
Growing up in the last half of the 20thC it was common knowledge that doctors, faced with a terminal patient, perhaps with cancer, dementia or excruciating and incurable pain, would offer to "Give you something to make you more comfortable"...a euphemism I remember from the time, since confirmed by a friend who was the daughter of a GP during the 1950s and 60s.
This was a hefty dose of Diamorphine or Insulin and was given with the consent of the patient or of the family in cases where consent could not be obtained.
Shipman grossly abused this tacit trust, and as a consequence the regulations were tightened up to make "such things" no longer possible.
Are we better off as a result?
Hard cases make bad law,as they say...

SIMON: The more important point here - an extension of what you say four minutes in - is how the present 'younger generations' are going to cope with their mortality. Brough up on a diet of 'Human Rights' (the 'right' to life?), and in a belief that the NHS exists "to cure death", they are likely to be far less prepared for the grim reality of human life, than any generations before them. I first encountered our 'mortality' in 1969, aged 16, when one of my three brothers was killed, aged 14, falling from a cliff in Ramsgate, Kent. In comparison the, more-timely, deaths of my grandparents, let alone uncles and aunts, were an ever-present reality. I was also a regular worshipper at our local Parish Church; and so received 'lessons-in-mortality' on a regular basis; not only from the Pulpit, but from the Church's Liturgical Year. All of that 'religious' and 'theological' awareness is now gone from the ambit of today's youngsters: raised on a strict diet of aggressive secularism (except when it conmes to Islam!).

I detected justified sarcasm in your description of old folk on buses and in supermarkets but there is a chunk of the population who will take you at face value, including the oldish who are still rolling their marbles and can see the opportunities to make blunt remarks sliding away. Such uncertainty causes me to reflect on " someone in a supermarket queue telling the world they are 92 for no obvious advantage, such as getting to the front". Life is a competition the grime reaper always wins. The object is to get the best score before he does. The young may challenge him with risk taking events but going for the longest stretch doesn't start until well after retirement. You have to be something like 92 and fit enough to stand in a Supermarket queue to know you are a contender with the finishing line getting close. You are already 12 beyond the target age so if you are competitive why not let all these husling youngsters (anyone less than 90) around you, know you have gone where they are less likely to tread.

Is it a primitive attitude to those who are biologically redundant? In the wild it would be of benefit to the group to protect the young , thus ensuring future offspring and the survival of the species . I am indulging my atavistic tendency to refer to all human behaviour in terms of cave man as I think we are still very much influenced by our origins.

Years ago my father rang them to report that an old and housebound lady (93) who lived across the road had water pouring into her house after roof damage caused by a storm. They were unwilling to help at all until they had been notified officially that she did not have sufficient funds to cover the cost of repairing the damage herself.
It begs the question 'Where do all the donations go to then?'

I think one reason why people were appalled by Hindley was that women are supposed to be the nurturing, caring gender. By helping kill children Hindley was going against the mothering instincts that are thought of as natural for women.
