Your app is great for getting a quick low quality scan of a negative to get a visual of what’s on the negative before you give it a more proper scan. It’s okay, I have the app and that’s what I use it for. Let’s be honest. This isn’t an all in one scan system, anyone that is developing their own film is gunna also get a legit scanning system. This is good for people who found their parents old negatives and want to see what’s on em

  • @sneakingelephant

I know people are hating on the video for them using their phone camera but it’s definitely a solid way to get the photos off quick if you don’t have much else gear or lab availability near you(or if you can’t afford the extra cost).
Some ways to improve the results using a phone would be to
-ensure you are shooting in macro mode
-block off the light on the sides of the negative using something flat(this will also help make the negative stay flat when taking the photo). You can use some books stacked. That are equal in size
-shoot in manual mode and put your on top of the books and leveled so that you are scanning as flat as possible. Set a short timer so u don’t have camera shake. By shooting in manual you can ensure you aren’t overexposing too much and get the sharpest image
-try to make sure the height the phone is at allows you to fill the framing with as much of the negative as possible(this will ensure you get the most detail)
-convert the negative to a positive using whatever external software/app you want. There are many free and cheap options that range in effectiveness. The main thing is to ensure your scan/picture of the negative is as detailed as you can get it.
I’ve done the above to quickly take a look at some of my negatives before scanning them using a cheap used flatbed scanner. The flatbed scanner takes a long time and is a pain to keep negatives flat in. The flatbed scanner gave me better results than what I can achieve with my phone but I have been able to make solid 5x7 prints using my phone as the film scanner before
Don’t let gear and costs hold you back from pursuing film shooting! It’s one of the most rewarding hobbies I’ve ever experienced!

@Photomyne it's not opinion it's fact. Phone camera sensors are too small to pick up any of the detail 35mm film has we know this it's not disputable. Negatives to phone apps have existed since the iPhone 3G. Unless you use a dedicated photo scanner or best case a full frame camera to take a picture of the slide when it's held flat in a light isolation box with a blacklight behind the film then convert it digitally to positive it's not going to do film shooting any justice.

Why do you think so- have you tried the app?

    • @aarocka11
      @aarocka11 Před 6 měsíci +2

Number one, you should be using a tripod to get the camera as close to the film as possible and a square as possible. That way you won’t need to use perspective correction which degrades the image quality by a lot depending on how extreme of an angle you’re holding your phone at. Number two you are using a phone. I get the phones have gotten really good at this point but this is a horrible way to do this. It’s good in a pinch, but my guy you should not be doing that. A used DSLR from 2008 with a macro lens would be much better. You didn’t even use the macro photography feature of your iPhone. I bet your app doesn’t even process the photo as raw meaning that using the default camera app in your iPhone will literally give you better quality. You don’t even have a film holder to prevent the film from warping. But number 3, all of this completely ignores that you’re shooting on an $8000 Leica. You are throwing away the quality of your camera if you scan your film with an iPhone in this way.
Your app is a pretty simple way to post process negatives but your app really isn’t the problem. It’s the fact that you are using a phone to digitize your negatives. No amount of software engineering is going to fix that.
Your website clearly shows people using tripods and film holders but you’re not using that in your demonstration. But it still completely ignores the fact that your app does not use the raw shooting capabilities of the iPhone. Using the default camera app or Lightroom is a superior option than shooting the photos in your app.
I used an old scanner from 2004 and got better results than what your app could provide.
