I found a bottle of mead I made in 2012 yesterday. I'm gonna have to open it up now... LOL

Sounds like you made a winner. If I remember right from Ricky's videos (way back) the D-47 was his favorite yeast. According to Lallemand it has an alcohol tolerance of 14% and to me it has a clean profile with a light fruity-ness. I use it often for my meads. Cheerz.

The closest thing I've found to "hard Fresca" is "Long Drink" which is a Finnish mixed drink made with gin and grapefruit soda. It used to be impossible to find in the US but it's available in most states now!

It's been a couple of years, now. I need to do another mead.

Curious as to the price of the 1 gallon kit? A one gallon batch topping out at 13% can be rather expensive to make; curious as to if its a better deal to get a kit. I checked the website but couldn't find prices anywhere. Good to talk mead on the cusp of Spring!

The idea of a traditional mead kit is strange to me. I guess if people buy it, you've got a market. But literally everything you need you can get from a grocery store if yer willing to use bread yeast...which I'd be fine with, did it for a long time.
Yeah, brewers yeast is better. D-47, 71B, EC1118, several others all make great meads. But as a beginner looking for a "kit", a tiny bit of research, a few bits of kit, and bread yeast is fine.

Yes, you can make mead with grocery store honey and bread yeast. But in my experience, bread yeast is hit-and-miss, and the quality of honey does make a difference. We’ve seen it many times in tastings of meads made with different varieties of honey on our audio show. Even if it’s your first batch of mead, why not start with the best ingredients?
