Die Antwoord's US debut at Coachella: interview with Xeni (Boing Boing Video)

  • Ninja and Yo-Landi of Die Antwoord sat down with Xeni Jardin of BoingBoing.net for an interview just after the South African "rap-rave" band's first-ever US performance at the Coachella music festival. The duo spoke about their explosive, internet-fueled burst to fame, and about the origins of their "car crash music" (it's disturbing, but you can't look away) by way of District 9 and an anarchic internet and music subculture in post-Apartheid South Africa.
We're told this was the only interview Die Antwoord granted during their US visit. The conversation originally streamed live as part of the Los Angeles Times / Brand X Magazine Coachella Oasis Webcast.

She had to work hard in the middle! I liked this interview because of her asking both of them directly. I hate when a singer holds the mic the whole time and the rest of their band never talks. But sometimes the rest of the band are idiots. Yolandi's cool, so I'm glad she talked.

It is quite refreshing to hear an interviewer ask good questions - and be aware during an interview and roll with it. Which is great for such a cool crew as Die Antwoord.

Then they just throw everything theve done and learned out the window and re-invent themselves. Like taking a Picaso and tearing it to shreds. That is Die Antwoord.
