- Despite a shortened running season this year, the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway ended their peak season of operations on a high with their annual 'End of Season Parade'. The one-day-only event featured 5 steam locomotives in service, running in a variety of combinations alongside the railways' resident diesel; No12 "J.B. Snell", and diesel locomotive "Shelagh of Eskdale", on loan from the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway.
The main coach set, working the 'End of Season Special' would featured a range of locomotives at the helm throughout the day. The Special began out of New Romney working to Hythe with "Hercules" and "J.B. Snell" in charge, before working down to Dungeness with "Winston Churchill" and "Hercules" double heading. From here, "Green Goddess" and "Northern Chief" would haul the Special all the way back to Hythe - covering over 13 miles. For the final stretch, "Samson", "Green Goddess" and "Northern Chief" triple headed the service back to New Romney, before "J.B. Snell" and "Shelagh of Eskdale" would take over at the helm, double-heading down to Dungeness and back, running non-stop.
Numerous supporting passenger services were scheduled, working around the special, in order to bolster the timetable. As a result, the day saw three coach sets in service, with passengers allocated compartments on services to ensure safety procedures were adhered to.
Locomotives:
RH&DR Pacific Class - No2 "Northern Chief"
RH&DR Diesel Class - No12 "J.B. Snell"
RH&DR Mountain Class - No6 "Samson"
RH&DR 'North American' Pacific Class - No9 "Winston Churchill"
RH&DR Mountain Class - No5 "Hercules"
R&ER Diesel Class - "Shelagh of Eskdale"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No1 "Green Goddess"
All footage filmed on Saturday the 31st of October 2020.
I actually been to this railway since my childhood.
Top notch quality not been on the RHDR for years and it brings back many happy memories.
Thanks for the treat. Brian
Thanks very much. It's always a favourite to visit.
My father managed the R,H and D railway in the 70’s so I spent so many happy hours on these tracks 😍
The quality of your video record is second to none! The winds, wet, sound and clouds seem to enhance the record, rather diminish the impact. Well done for your determination to stand against the gale and pan as if it were a fine summer day. Respect!
Thanks very much for the kind words. The weather certainly made for a trying day, but certainly worth it.
Thanks for putting up with the awful weather to bring us another excellent video. Well done.
Thanks very much

Full marks to you and the train crews for sticking it out in that weather, I can see there is a bit of packing & leveling to be done before next season.
Thanks very much. The camera makes the track look much worse than it actually is.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel i guess thats because the track is so small, you notice miniscule details
@@thewelshtraingeek4895 Low angle, telephoto lens, and scaled down track. Combined, the image can make 200 metres of track look like 50. Hence, the track is in a better state than the camera would have you believe.
Some great & classic footage, thanks for posting your efforts!
Thanks very much
Great video as usual, wonderful to see the trains in action; unfortunately shows the desperate need for mechanised track maintenance in the form of a 15” inch gauge Tamper
I saw you there on that day, on engine and off
excellent shots 👍it's been a hard year for them and i am glad they have have managed to pull off something hope next year things will be back to normal for them 🤞
Thanks very much. It's been great to see them running this year, in spite of everything the whole preservation movement has faced.
As allways... the best video documentation of RHDR-Events :)
Thanks very much
Terrific steam powers
Lovely capture
Thank you
Nice Seeing You Again This Year ;)
You too buddy! Shame about the weather
Yeah Wish It Was Like Last Year
Thanks for braving the crap weather, some great footage. Always makes me wonder how they manage to stay running - there's not an inch of straight trackwork!!!! Looks like it's going to be "cutting room floor" odds for the next month??? Thanks👍🏻❤
Thanks very much. In fairness, the telephoto lens makes the track look much worse than it actually is. There's a couple of videos in the pipeline for this month, hopefully including another black & white video.
Fantastic video like it
Thank you
Good video :)
Thank you
At .36 THAT is how they should be ran. Or have the diesel at the rear pushing for a faster turn-around.
At start I thought that the man was smoking🧐🧐
and the rabbit barely made it (15:29)...
