Fix WiFi Connected But No Internet Connection -Verizon Fios Modem with Netgear Nighthawk Router

I suddenly lost my internet connection, even though all of my WiFi devices showed that I was connected to my home network. After rebooting both the router and the modem, nothing seemed to help, so I finally called Verizon for assistance, but after an hour on the phone they were unable to resolve the issue and said because I had my own router they couldn't do anything more.
As it turns out, it was a simple fix, at least it seems so. I'm definitely not a techie and it was a bunch of trial and error attempts before I found the solution.
I cut the cord with cable last year and signed up for Verizon Fios to be my internet provider. Rather than rent their router for $15 a month or buy it for $300 I chose to buy my own, a Netgear Nighthawk AX3000 (amzn.to/34FPBSk). And the setup has worked flawlessly since installing it.
But after accidentally disconnecting the powerstrip the modem and router were plugged into, I lost the connection and no amount of testing on Verizon's end or on my end could resolve my showing I was connected to the internet but all of my WiFi devices saying there was no internet connection.
In this video I show you the primary step I took to resolve the issue and a secondary step that may have helped.

This just happened again! We just had hurricane-force winds rip through our town knocking out power for over 12 hours on Christmas Day. When it was restored, we had the same problem with WiFi being connected, but no internet. I followed the steps in the video again and they worked, so it does seem like this is the way to restore your internet. There were 2 differences in what I did though:
    1. I didn't try to release the DHCP
    2. I didn't do a factory reset of the router
While those two steps may be helpful in some instances, it wasn't necessary this time and the rest of the steps outlined in the video restored our WiFi internet connection within minutes. Hope this helps someone else with this problem.

That means flixzone is probably a scam too. It steals your personal information and your money from your bank account. Don't use it people!

I believe when you do the factory resets minus the cable it allows both devices to boot up properly, then you connect the ethernet cable. The release / renew is releasing the IP address and acquiring a new one and establishes a new internet connection.

    • @HomesteadDIY
      @HomesteadDIY  Před 3 lety +3

Perhaps, but it also happened a second time and that time I didn't do the factory reset (or release the DHCP), and it worked. So to my non-tech thinking, it's the reboots with the cable out that is the real trick. Thanks for watching. Cheers!

As you suggested: turning off both the router and cable modem then disconnect the Ethernet cable. Turn both router and modem back on and await full initialization. This may take a few minutes. Once both router and modem are initialized, reconnect both together with the Ethernet cable.

I've been trying and trying this technique hoping it works. Made a appt for FiOS tech but my schedule didn't take, using cellphone internet. Called to confirm, rep says there's no service call on my account, went through all the steps, figured I need a visit. Made it same day. Long story short, it appears someone did some work on the fiber optic and didn't fix my line. Tech made note of that in his work order. And I thought it was a faulty ont.

I've tried fixing my internet with power cycling before, with varying degrees of success. Every time I did fix it successfully, I would not know why it worked or what I did that made it work.
Had router problems again recently, then I thought to look up some CZcams videos to see what people had to say. I came across this one, and saw the suggestion to keep the modem and router disconnected from each other while power cycling, then connect them after they were both running.
Boom. Internet came back first try. Now I feel dumb for not making such a simple adjustment sooner. @Homestead DIY You're a life saver, you know that lol

Basically "factory" reset the router fixed the internet connection problem. Note that the "reset" botton must be held down for ~7 seconds while power on to reset the router to factory condition/setting. Pushing the reset botton and release right away will just restart/reboot the router not factory reset. Also note that Netgear routers have an internet data limit/cap setting ( disconnect internet to prevent "overage" charge for example). I would check that internet data limit/cap setting before resetting the router to factory condition/setting ( internet data limit/cap is off by default - factory setting).

Do not do a reset on the router unless you don’t have your WiFi dependent thermostat, security cameras, light bulbs, garage door etc.. on your WiFi network. Just have both the modem and the router On and do a reboot within the router’s configuration.

Why do you have a FiOS modem?
Mine is in the wall where they put the Ethernet cable?

Yesterday I tried playing Call of Duty: Coldwar on my PS5 after work & I was unpleasantly greeted by this issue.. I have the Nighthawk Gaming Pro router XR450 since January of 2019... Bruh I tried everything (I called Xfinity, I called Netgear, I reset both the modem & router) I was so angry after wrestling with this thing for 2hrs.., I said f#%k it & took a nap.. Now after seeing/hearing you remove the Ethernet cable from both modem and router then hit both reset buttons gives me hope.. Fingers crossed I’mma find out in a couple of hours if this step works... To be continue...

@@rahrah2235 Lol! Awesome! Glad it worked, though I'm sure it was actually the nap that was the real solution.

I bought my own Eero router and it doesn't connect to the internet on my ONT. I think my ISP needs to whitelist the mac address as I've literally tried everything at this point.
