I suddenly lost my internet connection, even though all of my WiFi devices showed that I was connected to my home network. After rebooting both the router and the modem, nothing seemed to help, so I finally called Verizon for assistance, but after an hour on the phone they were unable to resolve the issue and said because I had my own router they couldn't do anything more.
As it turns out, it was a simple fix, at least it seems so. I'm definitely not a techie and it was a bunch of trial and error attempts before I found the solution.
I cut the cord with cable last year and signed up for Verizon Fios to be my internet provider. Rather than rent their router for $15 a month or buy it for $300 I chose to buy my own, a Netgear Nighthawk AX3000 (amzn.to/34FPBSk). And the setup has worked flawlessly since installing it.
But after accidentally disconnecting the powerstrip the modem and router were plugged into, I lost the connection and no amount of testing on Verizon's end or on my end could resolve my showing I was connected to the internet but all of my WiFi devices saying there was no internet connection.
In this video I show you the primary step I took to resolve the issue and a secondary step that may have helped.

This just happened again! We just had hurricane-force winds rip through our town knocking out power for over 12 hours on Christmas Day. When it was restored, we had the same problem with WiFi being connected, but no internet. I followed the steps in the video again and they worked, so it does seem like this is the way to restore your internet. There were 2 differences in what I did though:
1. I didn't try to release the DHCP
2. I didn't do a factory reset of the router
While those two steps may be helpful in some instances, it wasn't necessary this time and the rest of the steps outlined in the video restored our WiFi internet connection within minutes. Hope this helps someone else with this problem.
A trick: you can watch series at Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching loads of movies recently.
@Rex Alonzo definitely, I have been using Flixzone} for since november myself :)
@Rex Alonzo Definitely, been using flixzone} for since november myself :)
@@rileyeaston1207 So weird your reply includes the exact same grammatical errors as the last commenter. It's almost as if this is spam and you have multiple accounts under different names. That means flixzone is probably a scam too. It steals your personal information and your money from your bank account. Don't use it people!
Is it possible that my internet also needs to be paid for ?
Thank you. Worked for me with my modem and orbi router system. I was working with Comcast and a tech friend on the phone for hours. Went to bed, woke up early and found this video. I thought "what do I have to lose?" and it worked. Thanks again.
Awesome! Glad it helped.
Working on a NETGEAR Nighthawk AC2400 too, solved my 2 hour problem in 2 minutes, thank you!
Thank you @homestead DIY! My router disconnected 10 months ago and have been dealing with my old crappy router ever since. I came across your video and got my Netgear router back up and now have 5 G again after almost a year of frustration!
Whoa! That would be frustrating. Glad it helped!
This is literally the only thing that worked after hours of trying various things. THANK YOU!!!!
Awesome! I'm glad it helped! Cheers!
Thank you so much! I’ve been struggling for 3 days straight with no internet because of the Rogers outage that occurred for one day. I just plugged out all the wires and reset it and it worked. Thanks once again
Awesome! Glad it helped
I had to leave a comment! IT WORKED! And I didn’t even have to do the pin reset on the router. Just cable disconnect, power off both, power on both, wait, cable reconnect. This simple solution after hours of headache. Thank you sir!
Glad it helped. It's surprising how simple the solution is. Cheers!
I was having the same issue with a different Netgear router and different modem but this solved the problem!! Thank you
Awesome! Glad it helped.
11/4/21 - bought a brand new Nighthawk router and had the exact same issue. You saved me!!! Thank you!!
Awesome! Glad it helped!
Thank you soooo much for this! I think you are the ONLY person who covered this properly with a brief explanation. Apparently, a lot of people suffered from the factory reset of the router and NETGEAR had poor instructions that made a lot of people go in circles for nothing.. I finally have internet!
Thank God because you posted this and it solved my issue!!! I was on my phone all day looking for the solution and finally this was it. Thank you again for helping
Awesome! Glad it helped. Cheers.
Same
Holy crap it worked. I had a power outage and couldn't get back online for the life of me. I have an Arris modem and a Netgear mesh router and the Netgear light was orange After ever reset. After several resets this was the thing that worked. Need to unplug the cable that ties the modem to the router and then reset both. Wow.
Yes- Thank you that worked wonders!! Such a simple solution but thank you so much for sharing!!! ❤️
Awesome! Glad it helped.
THANK YOU!!! Same exact situation happened to me but with different service provider (Spectrum). NETGEAR also tried having me pay for customer service because it was outside 90 day window from buying router… ridiculous. Very well explained, and the reset with the Ethernet unplugged did the trick.
I bought a NightHawk AX6 ax5200 model rax48 preowned and didn’t have the QR code for the app to scan. I followed what the app said “Plug all the wires in and reset”. Over and over not finding router. Followed your video, unplugged ethernet cable from router unplugged modem, reset router plugged in modem, reset modem, plugged in ethernet boom it worked. Thank you your a genius
Awesome! Glad it helped!
OH MY GOSH IT WORKED. WOW THANK YOU. I have Cox internet. I am using an Arris modem and Netgear router and tried restarting both devices multiple times, with no success. I unplugged the cable that connects the two together and BOOM it worked. THANK YOU!!!
That's awesome! I'm glad others are able to replicate my experience.
you’re a life saver man! worked perfectly the way you said. different night hawk and it still worked. sitting here ripping my hair hout
Glad it helped!
Wow, can’t believe this actually worked. It’s unbelievable that you spend so much money on a router and have to do hours of research to get it to work.
Thanks for uploading and helping me out.
Glad it helped. What gets me is these multi billion dollar corporations don’t know the simple answer to this problem that is obviously plaguing a lot of people
Thought for sure I'd need a new router, but this specific order of plugging/unplugging things got my wireless network up and running again! Thanks!
1. Remove WAN cable from back of router
2. Press reset button on back of router and wait for reset to complete
3. Remove power cord from modem
4. Remove power cord from router
5. Plug both back in
6. Connect WAN cable.
Your welcome👍
Bro wtf I’ve been trying constantly for days and that worked lmao your a hero
I believe when you do the factory resets minus the cable it allows both devices to boot up properly, then you connect the ethernet cable. The release / renew is releasing the IP address and acquiring a new one and establishes a new internet connection.
Perhaps, but it also happened a second time and that time I didn't do the factory reset (or release the DHCP), and it worked. So to my non-tech thinking, it's the reboots with the cable out that is the real trick. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
Thank you! I haven’t had internet for 3 days and you saved me from buying a new router!🎉
Awesome! Glad it helped.
i actually love you bro, my internet went out when my parents where out of town and i had to figure it out by myself, was out about 8 hours then i saw this video, thank you man.
Unfortunately I’m taken, but I’m glad the video helped! So damn frustrating when this happens
@@HomesteadDIY lol
Thank you for sharing. You are truely a genuine good guy.
Wow thank you my friend I was convinced I had to purchase a new one until I saw your video. Your a lifesaver you probably prevented someone from being cursed out tonight 😂 cause I was one irritable sob....
Ha! We’ve all been there with this issue. Glad it helped
This worked with my netduma r2 router. Thank you so much! My provider couldn't help me either
Thank you! This worked great for me. Had to power cycle the FiOS box (the ONT) and the router (while the Ethernet was unplugged). Then once they were both back online, I plugged in the WAN cable and it all worked
Great! Glad it helped
This video helped me on two separate occasions. Thanks for the help
Awesome! Glad it helped (twice!)
Saved my day, had to reset my router and change some settings on the ASUS app. You a legend❤.
Lol I’m glad it helped!
Dude, you are the man. I only have router. I couldn't figure it out never could my husband. I plug in my unit. Unplug...nothing. Waited plugged in everything till lights came on. 3 white one red. Unplugged the yellow cord while all still on, waited a few seconds and plugged yellow cord back in. Dude. My internet not only works but is faster. We are on fiber optic and I couldn't figure out why it wasn't as fast as it should be! Thx
Thank you sir! This was the answer I was looking for!
Glad it helped!
This is amazing! Worked for me and now I can print again!!! Thanks!
Awesome! Glad it helped
As you suggested: turning off both the router and cable modem then disconnect the Ethernet cable. Turn both router and modem back on and await full initialization. This may take a few minutes. Once both router and modem are initialized, reconnect both together with the Ethernet cable.
Correct!
Your video helped me too in 2022. Thank you
Thanks Homestead!!! Watched a few CZcams vids and yours did the trick!!!
Great! Glad it helped.
I was having the same issue and this worked for me. Thanks a Bunch for sharing.
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much! The unplugging the internet cable process worked, you are amazing.
Your welcome👍
Thank you for making this video! Maybe 2 years old but the same thing happened to me with my nighthawk with Spectrum. I did it the same way in the video you did and it worked. So if you have the same issue do it, it works!
Glad it helped. It seems to work for 99% of the people who try it
I've been trying and trying this technique hoping it works. Made a appt for FiOS tech but my schedule didn't take, using cellphone internet. Called to confirm, rep says there's no service call on my account, went through all the steps, figured I need a visit. Made it same day. Long story short, it appears someone did some work on the fiber optic and didn't fix my line. Tech made note of that in his work order. And I thought it was a faulty ont.
I've tried fixing my internet with power cycling before, with varying degrees of success. Every time I did fix it successfully, I would not know why it worked or what I did that made it work.
Had router problems again recently, then I thought to look up some CZcams videos to see what people had to say. I came across this one, and saw the suggestion to keep the modem and router disconnected from each other while power cycling, then connect them after they were both running.
Boom. Internet came back first try. Now I feel dumb for not making such a simple adjustment sooner. @Homestead DIY You're a life saver, you know that lol
Glad it helped!
Did the same thing as you stated it worked perfectly. Thank you sir!!
Awesome! Glad it helped.
Thanks man!!!! Worked for me
Worked for me big bro! Appreciate yuh!! Nov 2nd/2023
Glad it helped!
seems to have just worked for me, thank you!
This totally worked! Thank you!
Awesome! So glad it helped
Dude you are awesome! I did so many different things! on the phone with"tech" supports, netgear wanted me to pay $140 for their tech support. And your video fixed my problem! You sir are a legend!
Awesome! I was in the same situation and pulling my hair out with tech support which also wanted to charge me to actually help. Glad it worked for you. Cheers!
@@HomesteadDIY I reseted my modem and netgear router, still saying no internet connection
my isp said that my modem is outdated, could that be the problem?
Thank you so much for the video! After a day of trouble shooting this was finally the fix for my Nighthawk AX5200 router. Netgear wanted to charge me for help because my device was older than 90 days... Lol unreal
Glad it helped!
Great video. And Thank you so much for sharing
You are a life saver! Thank you!
It seems like this video is old but it still works, thank you very much.
You’re welcome! Glad it helped. Cheers!
I just wanted to say thank you.
OH MY ATLANTA, IT WORKED!! Thank you very much!!!!
Lol! Glad it helped. Cheers
Still helped me todayyyyyy!! 🙏🙏
I'm going to try this. It's so annoying that this happened today when my new neighbor had their internet service turned on.
Thanks for the helpful video!
You're welcome! Glad it helped
Absolutely wonderful thank you just remove ethernet from both modem and router and power cycle both without cable you fixed my problem sir Thank you
Glad it helped!
Thank you for this information it helped me imensily thank you for that blessing of a headache I got now gone
Glad it helped!
I just bought mine, and it’s doing this already.
Thank you. I'm going to try it!
Let us know if it works. For the vast majority of people it does, but there is a very small group for whom it didn't. Cheers!
It worked thanks
Thanks, It Worked!!!
Awesome! Glad it helped.
THANK YOU!
Thank you it worked!!
Woohoo! Glad it worked for you too.
I did this twice and it’s still staying a solid amber. Could it be possible I just need a new lan line cord?
Worked for me... Thanks!
Awesome!
It worked thank you.
Your welcome👍
Thank you sir!
You’re welcome!
I reset the router that did the job , thank you 😊
Awesome! Glad that worked.
This worked thank u so much
Glad it helped!
You're right. I had to turn the modem and Wi-Fi off. I turned on the modem and allowed it a a minute then I turned on the Wi-Fi. I only have 1 cable connected between the Wi-Fi and modem, each yellow to yellow female connection.
Unplugging ethernet cable and cycling power on the wifi router worked on junk a*s netgear expensive a*s equipment. Thank you liked and subbed
Was about to try this trouble shooting method when my router randomly decided to start working with my wifi devices. . . Gotta love technology
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Basically "factory" reset the router fixed the internet connection problem. Note that the "reset" botton must be held down for ~7 seconds while power on to reset the router to factory condition/setting. Pushing the reset botton and release right away will just restart/reboot the router not factory reset. Also note that Netgear routers have an internet data limit/cap setting ( disconnect internet to prevent "overage" charge for example). I would check that internet data limit/cap setting before resetting the router to factory condition/setting ( internet data limit/cap is off by default - factory setting).
THANK YOU
Life saver!!
Dude thank you this worked
Glad it helped!
I'm goimg to try this but the problem I am having is i connected my nighthawk R8000P router to Verizon modem it's the same Verizon modem that was use in this video above I can browse the internet through the wifi but I have another Verizon wifi router in my master room when I plug that router into my nighthawk using one of the spare connector on my nighthawk router it telling no internet. Can someone help me out with this? I tried reset both of my wifi router but not the Verizon modem.
I have spectrum for internet and a netgear router and this worked!
which kind of router do you have? do you have a R7000 AC1900 Smart WiFi?
Awesome! Glad it helped
@@HomesteadDIY I use the Ethernet cable wit my fios router … I did what u said and remove it and reseted it , didn’t work
Could be that my WiFi needs to be paid ?
@@zoobinbaccm3911 That could be. Most everyone else seems to find it works for them.
i wouldnt waste my time writing a comment but this actually worked for me
Awesome!
A firmware update for the nighthawk may fix these software glitches..
Yes! Once I was able to establish a wifi connection the Netgear app recommended a firmware update. Cheers!
Amazing how just having the connection between two devices that are supposed to be connected can confuse the system if both don't work properly first before connecting . Kinda like human relationships 😂 . Thank you for the video sir helped me greatly 👍
And such a silly solution too. Amazing tech support isn’t aware of it. Glad it helped. Cheers!
This specific order reset worked for me
Awesome! Glad it helped
God bless you, this just fixed my internet, after a whole day being offline... Weeeeewwwww 😰😰😰😰
Just did the same thing a d it worked thank you
Glad it helped
Oh wow it worked 👏
Lol, yeah it is shocking it's such a simple solution. Glad it helped.
Thank you so much!!
Just got hit by ida and haven’t had light till a couple days ago and the internet is not working
I have optimum and a nighthawk r6080 and only had it for a week. My internet light is still soild amber. Think this might work ?
I don't see why not. It works for the vast majority of people who try it.
I don't have the same set up. But it worked! Thank you so much for sharing!
Glad it helped!
Do not do a reset on the router unless you don’t have your WiFi dependent thermostat, security cameras, light bulbs, garage door etc.. on your WiFi network. Just have both the modem and the router On and do a reboot within the router’s configuration.
Why do you have a FiOS modem?
Mine is in the wall where they put the Ethernet cable?
you ever figure it out?
I need help it says there's internet but it only works via wifi and I can't use wifi on my laptop it keeps disconnecting and asking for authentication but the pw is right! I don't know what to do I tried everything. like my desktop works with wifi but not my laptop and neither works with a wired connection and the wire is fine it worked fine yesterday on another pc..
You are an absolute hero!! Wait no, it’s still not working. 😂
I *hate* when that happens!
Yesterday I tried playing Call of Duty: Coldwar on my PS5 after work & I was unpleasantly greeted by this issue.. I have the Nighthawk Gaming Pro router XR450 since January of 2019... Bruh I tried everything (I called Xfinity, I called Netgear, I reset both the modem & router) I was so angry after wrestling with this thing for 2hrs.., I said f#%k it & took a nap.. Now after seeing/hearing you remove the Ethernet cable from both modem and router then hit both reset buttons gives me hope.. Fingers crossed I’mma find out in a couple of hours if this step works... To be continue...
T H A N K Y O U‼️‼️‼️
@@rahrah2235 Lol! Awesome! Glad it worked, though I'm sure it was actually the nap that was the real solution.
Samething happened to me ill try this after work
It worked youtube comes through yet again!!!!
I'm having this issue right now!
Same
I bought my own Eero router and it doesn't connect to the internet on my ONT. I think my ISP needs to whitelist the mac address as I've literally tried everything at this point.
Thank-you
You're welcome
I have this problem right now but I'm at work. Now I have to explain to my wife how to do this. Pray for me
what kindnof cable are you talking about? a coax or ethernet?
