Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

I love a headboard that I can put my glasses on. A bottle of water, with a lid so bumping it and tipping it over won’t be a problem. Did you say you’re going to build a side railing for safety? They aren’t just for kids anymore. I’m 64 and I fell out of bed 3 times last year. The first drop out of bed wouldn’t be too bad. But an extra roll or a stumble standing up could be so dangerous!! Build a railing up there. Lol

When you get the stove pipe, it would not a bad idea to light the wood burner outside for the first time to burn off the surface chemicals they invariably have when new. Or open the door and window to make sure you have good air circulation the first time you light it.

Something I have learnt..... have the fridge at waist height helps prevent food from going to waste by being buried at the back for so long. Even just a foot off the ground helps. Also, have a cleanable splash back behind the cooker is worth it. and finally locking wheels/sliders for appliances makes cleaning really easy.

Theo, please do a burn in with the stove outside to let the smell wear off before you connect it indoors. I've burned Yotel stoves and Vermont castings and they all have a new smell that needs to be burned off. It's really stinky and will linger in the house a long time. đŸ‘đŸ»đŸ‡ș🇾

Bea & Theo have you thought of doing a stand below both the stove and oven. It will lift the oven so you don't have to stoop so far down when baking, but also there will be a space below to store pots & pans. Same with the fridge, if you put it up on a stand, again you don't have to stoop, but also there can be a space below to store cat food for Gingy Bear & Fernando. Just a thought from a person that is 5'3". Everything is looking spectacular, it's been so rewarding to see it from start to what you have achieved. So very proud of you both.

Theo, it may be worth checking that your timber is stored properly so that termites don't get into it. You wouldn't want them eating into the timber in your house and you could inadvertently introduce them if you're using the timber to make furniture. They are silent destroyers and something people from cold climates are not always aware of. The best way to attract termites is to leave timber lying around on the ground outside.

Might try the cooker or fridge at an angle in the corner that way you don’t have a deep cabinet in the corner where things go to disappear!
Your home is magnificant! Congratulations on a job very well done!

That mezzanine without a rail is an accident waiting to happen. đŸ€” You really need to consider something because one wrong move and its see you later or a lot of time in hospital. 😳

The wood stove is gorgeous! Does it need to be “lit” outside for the first burn? Some stoves give off fumes which are very unpleasant on the first lighting.

I actually think a chest at the head of your bed would be better. It would put the bed a little further into the middle giving you a bit more head room. And how would you get around it at the foot. But, by now you'll have done it already. â€đŸ‘

When you start building your kitchen counters, you should consider building to the height that is ergonomically friendly to your own height...you can build a platform for the fridge and stove to sit on to be level with the counters. But think of your back!!!

You could also put a cabinet under the refrigerator and stove for storage and it would lift up your appliances a little bit,and just wondering if you were going to install wrought iron on the edge of the mezzanine to keep from falling

Just a suggestion: rather than having to bend down every time you want something from the fridge/freezer, maybe build a smart little storage area to sit it upon so that it’s raised to a level that makes things easier to access/clean?

Not sure what you think of this idea, but....when you set up the fridge, have it sitting on a high drawer so that you don't have to keep bending over to get things out of the fridge. The drawer can be used for items that don't see the light of day often but are essential to a kitchen (insert your own list here). Just a thought and perhaps useful to you (if not..discard at will)

I'm impressed that your world travels have given you such practical knowledge, such as the best log-burning stove (discovered in Sweden) and the best fridge (discovered in Cornwall). I'm sure Iceland will be great; what I'm not sure of is whether I'd ever leave such a paradise as you've created for yourselves in Portugal.

House looking superb! RE: the goats: Notice how they prefer the deciduous leaves of the trees above them to the brush you cut in this vid. If you can cut a few tree branches now and then of some tree that's not poisonous to goats, that would be good. If they don't get enough leafy branches to eat they will strip the bark from the trees in their enclosure and ultimately kill the trees.
