  • Another trip to scour the local stores this time to find more possible options for how to get a nice glossy seal on painted tiles that will stand up to the heat of a hot coffee mug.
    My local car part supplier yielded three possible spray finishes to try on my tiles. I am trying to find the perfect finish for the painted tiles that will turn them into functional coasters. My criteria - economical (rules out resin), ideally available on the island so it's easy to get my hands on, glossy finish, easy to use, stands up to the heat of a hot coffee mug without going sticky.
    In this test, I used 3 previously painted ceramic tiles which had been left to fully cure for 1 month. I followed the instructions on the cans for how to use the paint - basically 2 light coats and then one wetter coat to finish. All tiles were then left for 7 days before carrying out the hot mug test. How did they get on - watch the video to find out!

    Hi there, I can recommend that if you had placed the completed tiles in a hot oven around 100 Celsius for about 20 minutes this would have baked these tiles to a more heat resistance level and you would have had better results as many heat resistant polymers need to be heat activated to harden the product I’ve tried this technique and it works very well with many other spray acrylic enamel polymer clearcoats, especially the gloss clear coat that definitely needs to be heat activated that’s why it’s for car engines the first time the engine runs hot that will activate the enamel and produce a harder wearing coat once the engine cools down, hope this helps 🙌

    Here's something to try with any finish you experiment with. Give it a heat treatment. I baked a tile I had sprayed with Krylon Clear Gloss. It came out nice and my hot mug does not stick. I baked it at 200 degrees for an hour. The color wasn't pretty to start with and it may have dulled a little. And with medium hard effort I can scratch the surface. I think a lower temp for half the time will be my next test. Thanks so much for your inspiration and information!

      @slertgum Před 5 lety +3

      I was just going to ask if anyone had baked theirs. I just purchased the high heat one you tested in the video and it says to bake at 200 degrees Celsius for an hour to cure. My test subject is in the oven as we speak! How did your further tests go with heat? I am unfamiliar with Krylon so not sure if it supposed to be baked like the high heat one above. I will let you know how mine goes :)

    • @slertgum
      @slertgum Před 5 lety +3

      Just looked at the cooled tiles. Gloss is good, hard a nails, hot cups no issue but my white did go a bit beige. Not sure if that is due to the paint being acrylic underneath or not enough coverage/coats with the spray so I will try another one with more coats and check the colour preservation. Due to product requiring 200 degrees Celsius for an hour, not sure if lowering the heat or time is an option???

    • @TheLynneol
      @TheLynneol Před 4 lety +6

      @@slertgum , the engine spray is supposed to be baked at 200 degrees Fahrenheit which would be around 95 degrees Celsius. Also, don't use your home oven. The fumes can be dangerous so it is better to get a smaller toaster oven and bake your tiles out in a garage.

    The Duplicolor Clearcoat Acrylic needs to cure for 7 days before you can put a hot mug on top of the tile. The Duplicolor Gloss Clear Engine Enamel needs to be baked, in the oven, at 200 degrees FAHRENHEIT not Celsius for 20 minutes. Do not use your home oven. The fumes could be dangerous and the smell can stay in the oven. Use a toaster oven in a garage or outside.

      I'll still be able to use some of the other finishes I bought on my paintings even if they don't work for tiles. Plus if only one of us has to try them all instead of all of us, then I saved everyone a few dollars and some frustration too

    Excellent experiment. Since you already have so many varnishes, I'm going to be a bit cheeky and ask you to test them on alcohol ink tiles or alcohol ink paintings pleeeeaaase. I live in the UK and Kamar is not available here, and so far seems to be the only varnish that alcohol ink artists will recommend. So Im really stuck. If I can find another varnish that performs equally well with alcohol inks (and is readily available) that would be phenomenal. So please put us UK alcohol ink artists out of our misery. Thank you!

    I've been making coasters with kamar varnish + UV protectant + krylon triple thick glaze, would putting the duplicolor acrylic enamel over the triple thick glaze work to make the coasters heat resistant? How long would I have to wait for the coasters to fully cure for them to be ready to sell?

      Curious if you had any luck with this? I also use kamar varnish+uv protection+x3 thick glaze and had the same thought as you. Would love to know how it went if you succeeded!

    Do you know if resin works alright with heat? Or would I need to also use a sealant? Is there a brush on version? I don't have the option of taking it outdoors. Thanks so much for the video. I was also surprised that the high heat version didn't work well.

    • @AcrylicPouring
      @AcrylicPouring  Před 6 lety

      There are a lot of resins designed for use with high heat that should work beautifully and look gorgeous too. Resin is outside of my budget so I've been looking for a cheaper non-stick alternative. If you can afford resin, go for it!

    • @MeteorMega
      @MeteorMega Před 6 lety

      I use resin on my tiles/coasters. It's beautiful but it is expensive if you are doing a lot of coasters or pictures. My friend uses her coasters every day with her coffee and has not had a problem.

    Deby the science geek! Thanks for doing this for us, especially since products are so much more expensive where you are.
    Several people who have used the engine enamel have stated that they cure them in an oven according to directions. Does it say anything on the label about curing the spray? When used on engines, they run the car for a while to cure the paint.

      I just went and looked at the can and it does say heat cure at 300 degrees for 2 hours. OOOps I didn't do that but the hot cup never stuck. Deby you gonna try this before I do so I can see how you made out. LOL :

    • @AcrylicPouring
      @AcrylicPouring  Před 6 lety +1

      Mine doesn't have anything on the can about heat curing so I didn;t do that. I've also read a couple of examples where people tried doing that in their domestic oven and created quite some nasty fumes in their homes - so I decided not to even try because I wouldn't want to recommend that to anyone. Better safe than sorry!

    • @BlaizC
      @BlaizC Před 6 lety

      You're right. I'm sure that the curing directions don't take into consideration that you're sealing over acrylic paint that contains the kinds of additives that we use!

      Sorry mini, not sure what you are asking. You mean the sealers I tried? Would they work on wood? I honestly couldn't say because I've never painted on wood nor used any form of decoupage. It may be worth looking for a mixed media group and asking for their advice on that.

      Ashley L I’m Wondering that same question . Did u have any luck finding a sealant ?

    • @vardiya3996
      @vardiya3996 Před 5 lety +1

      I actually make coasters with 4x4 pictures mod podged onto them, with three coats of mod podge on top. I used the Dupli-Color Acrylic Enamel Clearcoat over them (following the instructions on the can of 2 light coats and one medium wet coat applied 10 minutes apart) and they are completely water resistant. After 3 days they stuck a little when I tried the hot coffee test, but I left them alone for another week and tried again and they passed with flying colors. No sticking at all. I use the Acrylic Enamel Clearcoat on all my coasters now. It works perfectly.

    another great vid,, thanks again... I was wondering (even before you tested it with the hot mug) if the third one needs more time to dry since it's a super duper coating for engines.. maybe it needs more curing..
    check the company or the folks who sold it to you and ask if anyone knows a special trick about it.. ?????

      I was just testing to see if it would leave a ring. In an earlier test I did, one of the finishes got a water ring as well as sticking. None of these had that effect.

    I think the engine coating needs to be set with heat. Maybe try a few in an oven at high heat for about 10 minutes to set the coating. You may even get rid of the spray marks. ?

    Deby, I might be wrong, but when I clicked on the amazon link, the spray that came up was a matte finish. I looked all over the page to see if there was a gloss, like the can in your hand, but I didn’t see it. Can you check that link to see if I’m crazy?! Thanks!
