Well done my friend. This is a testament for TODT and their work that the buildings still stand and are being used. Learned something new, did not realize there was a full sub pen in Norway, knew of the one in southern France and the Baltic. The pens building will live on almost forever or until someone decides to build new. Great video of the area coupled with the original photos brings distance to reality. The 2 of you stay safe out there.

They really took good care of their submarine crews. Life on a submarine wasn’t glamorous and hard on the crews. Getting back to a base like this had to be something they looked forward to. Did the support personnel stay in the same barracks and area as the submarine crews? It must have been something to see when the crews came ashore.

Hey shipmate, excellent video. I love looking at all of the historical sites that you show us. I did begin Submarine School after Basic Training but bombed out due to childhood ear problems; Doctor would not let me in the 100' pressure tank. Went to a new school for Radar and Navigation and then on to an Aircraft Carrier. Germany has so much rich history. It's amazing how much is there and in France. Wars are started by politicians but fought by people like you and me. In Das Boot, they had a really cool looking U-Boat pen. I think that pen still exists?? I would have picked out those barracks buildings just walking by. Pretty much a standard design that you see all over Germany. The Allies took over a lot of the German military sites after the war, and are still in some of them. I lived in barracks much like those for a couple years.
What many Americans don't know/understand about German military sites is that they were (are) smaller and scattered all over the place. No huge bases like we have in the US, but small bases which may hold a battalion, and another installation 5 miles away with another type unit, and another across town the other way with yet another unit. This increased survivability, by making these sites harder to detect and bomb. Even if you got one, there was another close by.
Many of the barracks areas had tunnels, shelters and such, but they were generally closed off after the war. Some were intentionally flooded due to the threat of booby traps, others documented and sealed up. I know of one tunnel that went for over 10 kilometers - after a collapse under a road this one gets inspected regularly now I'm told. The WWII Germans were big diggers lol.

What a great way to utilize those structures that once were Kriegsmarine barracks. I bet they make some pretty comfy and affordable housing for many people/families. That one bunker constructed in the mountain with a garage door, looks like it would make a good sized solid garage. Just to think that the playground was once an Appellplatz for the Kriegsmarine solders/officers roll call. Thanks for the photos and diagrams of the area HH. The officers Barracks looked like they were also well constructed. Too bad they aren't utilized for something useful. Looking forward to EE road trip and what he discovered. Thanks for sharing a very informative video on this French village that was developed around the German U-boat barracks! I'm really impressed with your deep research and I'm glad that you are really proud of your tough son!! Really looking forward to see your new videos 👍👍👍👍

Brilliant video. As you well know U Boat crews had such a high casualty & death rate, they certainly deserved a nice place to relax after patrols.

What a complex and intricate Kriegsmarine U-boat crew camp. In amazing shape even to this day. I would say even far superior than some living quarters today. That is wonderful that they are able to utilize those buildings that were once Gernan barracks. Yes, can imagine the young German soldiers cleaning up, recharging, and ready to party after a long intense military operation. You could probably relate somewhat HH having served as a sub sonar operator. I noticed there was some graffiti on the officer's quarters. A shame they were left to decay. 13 hrs - way to go EE. Yes, many adults couldn't handle the elements you are often exposed to and endure. You are a trooper. Thanks HH & EE. Continue to stay safe.

What a wonderful site, with so much still standing, and more importantly, still in use some 80 years later. Looks like EE had a great time, and all that walking, reminds me of the Nijmegen international marches.
Thank you for taking the time to research this village, and for getting the then and now photos, not much has changed, except these are happier times.
Looking forward to seeing more, and maybe inside the submarine pens?. Stay safe and well my friend

I live on disability due to a back injury. So I spend a lot of time stuck inside. Plus a little over a year ago my wife of 14 years passed away. So seeing the adventures y’all have and the amazing sites you show us. Really helps take my mind off of things. Gives me a place to get away too even though I’m unable too. So from the bottom of my heart thank you. I am a patreon supporter. Unfortunately all I can do is the $5. But if I could do more I happily would. You and EE and BBG definitely deserve it. God bless and stay safe

@@WW2HistoryHunter , After thinking on this a bit , the Goodyear- Phoenix air port was a navy base in ww2 . Some of the very old houses in Goodyear were base housing for that base so we do have a few still standing buildings from that time . As no one expected enemy bombs this far in to US air space none are bomb proof .
