    Of all the stamps I have, my absolute favorite is a 1973 Swiss Europa Posthorn stamp cancelled on the day of my birthday in Basel (where I was born). Catalog lists it for $0.35. When I spotted it, I was ready to pay hundreds for it. Fortunately, I hid my enthusiasm from the dealer. When I look at it, I just image someone across town routinely dropping it into a mailbox while I was opening my eyes for the first time. It was a Friday, 4 days before Christmas. Perhaps it was on a last minute Christmas card? Maybe a year end payment so that something could be deducted in the tax year? A tourist writing home while on a holiday trip? I'll just let my imagination go free.

    I simply couldn’t agree more. A used stamp has actually served it’s duty. It has traveled and because it was fixed, it delivered. It has done its job! An old issue with a nice cancellation is attractive and a miracle that it survives! Great video and thanks!!!

    I completely agree. I’ve collected the Victorian and Edwardian stamps in my book specifically looking for socked-on-the-nose cancels that would’ve been familiar to a beloved character of literature, penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the eminent detective, Mr. Sherlock Holmes. My most favorite is a stamp that has a Charring Cross postmark. It gives me a smile whenever I see it. Another favorite is a stamp with a Glasgow postmark. And this may lead me to the rabbit hole of chasing specific cancellation marks!!! I thoroughly enjoy each and every video you release. It’s an affirmation that this hobby is about fun and excitement!! Like finding an Imperial Chinese stamp in a random bag of two thousand stamps I recently purchased. Have fun my friend and I’ll see you in the next video.

    As an absolute amateur I prefer used stamps, I have a lot on paper cut round the cacellation which often hold as much history as the stamps themselves.
    It would be nice to see some of the stamps a bit closer, but I wouldn't want to interrupt the your enthusiastic flow.

    I like both, cancelled and mint. Older stamps are interesting for cancellations like you showed in your video. In many countries you can specialize, but with this the cancel has the priority, not the stamp. Old stamps are cancelled easier to get. Regarding US cancels: Yes, it is far more difficult to find nice cancelled ones, because this was often the exception.
    The films you showed were very interesting. You often see in these films that USA had a functional public transportation. Today USA does not have this any more and on a discussion some of the Americans said, it is not possible to build this because USA is so big. But if you are in China, Japan or Europe you can see it is possible and functioning. Ok, this is not the topic, but quite typical to see for the old films. A second: There existed a lot of different smaller stores on the streets and tons of people went on the sidewalk next to these stores. We don´t have this in Europe as well, but if you look old films from Europe from the 30/40s, it is the same picture.
    I´m not a huge fan of these big albums. They tend to destroy stamps. I experienced it several times when I bought such albums. Mint is a huge problem, because they tend to stick on the album pages after a while. Especially older ones, where the gum likes to do that. You can also get creases or the hinge gets from the album page and the stamp get lost or damaged.Besides this you have a very nice US section there with some really nice stamps.

    From the word go, I could not decide to only collect mint stamps or only collect used stamps. Both are special. The mint stamp can be pristine and the stamp design and image really comes to the fore with nothing "damaging" it or obscuring it, like a postal mark; but, used stamps are just irreplaceable and precious as you so well explained and showed how the cancellation carries in it the history and journey of the stamp. Anyway, I decided to collect both a mint and used stamp for each stamp design. It will probably be difficult and not possible to consistently have both, but that is what I really want to do. Thank you so much Mr. Silk, for another great video. You are excellent at telling stories! Very intriguing. 🙂

    Very interesting addition to see a film clip of 1930’s Los Angeles. Used stamps definitely can stimulate the imagination. Some US cancels are more valuable, particularly with early US. For example, post offices were supposed to use black ink for canceling, but sometimes other colors were used and are often worth more. Other cancels to look out for are paid; paid all; steamboat; railroad; ghost town; numbers;; certain dates; exposition; etc. These can be worth more, and a US Specialized catalog will give this information.

    I have been using the Scotts [Amos Publishing] International stamp books [1840-1940] for the last 15 years and enjoy collecting world stamps. For some of the issues I add my own pages to provide spaces for issues that are not provided on the printed pages, and this works well for me. Like you I also collect Australia and have many of the issues housed in Scotts Specialty Books. I have made my own pages to cover George V issues as numerous varieties occur on these stamps.

    Hi, I also collect used stamps. In some collection areas I try find both used and unused and I even have separate albums for those.
    I try to avoid cto cancelation and if I have those in my collection I change those if I find real used and posted stamp.
    Socked on the nose (SON) cancelation are hard to find and I prefer stamps where cancelation is at the middle, horizontal balaced and place and date can be read properly. I think this is definition here in Finland. Otherwise it is only fancy or good cancelation.
    Thank you again about your great video😊🤗.

    My collection of mint stamps is pretty complete from 1890 onwards and the only commemorative I am missing is $5 Colombian......mint stamps are my vice, all the way. Why you ask? Well, I really enjoy the investment potential of stamp collecting and find mint stamps so much more interesting than coins or precious metals.

      @silkontheweb  Před 5 měsíci

      Have you encountered the resistance to that idea in our hobby? I've been trying to understand why the idea of stamps as an investment strategy is so repugnant to some stamp collectors... • @chrissahar2014
    @chrissahar2014 Před 6 měsíci

    Some US stamps from the past 20 years have great potential to hold greater value used than unused due to the vast drop of mail use for letters and the use of meter strips in place of stamps for packages. I like to collect the newest issue of Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express stamps - panes when my budget allows, singles with plate number when I cannot. But for older issues of PM and PMEs I usually get used stamps as the panes for many of these has become a little pricey or downright expensive for an error-free modern issue. Why? I figure that high quality used PM and PME stamps are likely just as scarce as the panes and, in some instances, scarcer than the panes. However, the market is such that the MNH of these runs at a higher price than used.
